Which 1980s soap opera was better? “It’s a truth universally acknowledged that Dallas was a better-written show than Dynasty,” says Alexandra Jacobs, “but I would argue that Dynasty was a more captivating one…”

Even a quote plagiarized from Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice couldn't spoil both shows in their inaugural stages. Dallas was the first, of course, and can be congratulated for it. It was fitting that both ended in the trash can as the novelty of the rich-with-problems theme gradually wore off public tolerance and consciousness. The best screenplay to my mind was the Alexis courtroom scene, in which Blake Carrington was on trial for the murder of his son's homosexual lover, Ted Dinard. https://youtu.be/JiXd3KbY1X8

Dallas wins hands down. The shows really peaks your interest with mini-series/season 1, hooks you in with the season 2's who shot jr? eventhough they drop the ball with the following season. It slowly picks up again with Jock's death and goes strong until swan song, any afterwords is hit or miss. That's seven great years to dynasty 3 decent seasons.

If I recall the show's demise was hastened by the death of Jim Davis, from which it never truly recovered.

I disagree the show was at a standstill before he died. I hated pam obsession over having a baby and thought the show lost it's way after the whoshotjr reveal. Jock's death gave them 3 more great seasons.

The relationship between Jock and Miss Ellie was the glue which held the show together. The court scenes at Jock's trial in Series 3 kept the show in the game. I liked the Tapaka storyline in Season 4 and Pam tracing her birth mother. The downfall of the show started in Series 5 when the public at large knew Jim Davis had died but the writers procrastinated and were completely at a loss of how to deal with it.

We may have to agree to disagree. Okay, i'm not going to argue with you on the parents being the glue. Cause they were. Season 4 as a whole was a letdown, the mystery of "WHOSHOTJR?" carried the first few episodes but once it's revealed the show loses my attention. Kristen was a lame choice imo. Tapaka? you mean we couldn't find anything better for the old folks to do than fight over a piece a swamp land "YAWN". Senator ewing storyline cause he does absolutely nothing. I had no interest to the Jr/Leslie Stewart storyline. The Asian oil wells. Mitch and lucy romance. What i did like was additions and returns of Dusty, Donna Culver, Afton Cooper and Rebecca wentworth.

Dallas lost something vital that it never got back after Jim Davis died. The war between Bobby and J.R. for control after Jock died was good, but after that, the show really never recovered for me.

Dynasty was never as strong, though. The first three or four years were good but after that it just got so bizarre with long lost whoevers always popping up, or old characters with new faces, etc.

Knots Landing blew them both away, IMHO.

Yes now this was my obsession. That’s a good show almost all the way through.
