It’s winter, which means that the new TV season is underway, and for comedy, at least in the US, tastes are starting to shift away from conventional multi-camera sitcoms. To nobody’s surprise, The Big Bang Theory is still going, and Will & Grace has made a comeback, but elsewhere, multi-cam comedies are dropping like flies.

2 Broke Girls, Dr. Ken, and Last Man Standing all got the boot, Baby Daddy bowed out after six years, and Kevin Can Wait has undergone a significant reshuffle, with the firing of female lead Erinn Hayes. Elsewhere, more low-key and serious comedies like Fleabag and Modern Family are the new black.

Of course, this is only natural since comedy goes in cycles in terms of what's popular. If it had come out at around the same time as The Office, Mrs Brown’s Boys would have probably been completely slaughtered, instead of becoming a smash hit. US multi-camera comedy is undoubtedly in a bit of a slump right now, but there’s bound to be another big success at some point.

Until that next big thing comes around though, the tide turning against studio sitcoms in the US does suggest that there are some things about the genre that audiences feel they could do without...

Identical cousins.

Crazy misunderstandings.

Stupid characters so dumb they couldn't survive in the real world.

How about "The Fat/Obnoxious Guy With The Hot Wife"? :rolleyes:Yes!! I would love to see a couple this time with the roles reverse. A fat wife and the hot husband. Not all women are thin and not all men are fat. Time for these producers to take a reality check.

Actually, I like that idea, because I feel it adds a more interesting dynamic that's never really been properly explored before.

At least in Roseanne, both the husband and wife are heavyset. Vera did appear once on Cheers but Diane threw a pie and accidently hit in the face.

On The Sopranos, there was Johnny and Ginny Sacromoni. Johnny Sac wasnt hot, but hot headed, close enough?

Another cliche that needs to die is the dumb father. Please!!!!!!!!!!!! Stop the male bashing!! Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin are the most stupid people in the entire world and not one man is THAT STUPID! Sorry. Not every father is perfect but I'm tired of them screwing up and the wife has to bail them out. Time for this stereotype to die.

Mr. Belvedere today had two cliche plotlines: one main character got hooked on diet pills, while two others went to war with a rodent in the house. I say keep the rat, dump the pills.

Thankfully, however, developers and executive producers Frank Dungan and Jeff Stein managed to rein things in before the situations really got out of hand.

Take that off TV and all you'll have is a test pattern.

He meant that 95% of the sitcoms, dramas, ect are either liberal or far left in their content take them off the air and you won't much if any prime time entertainment.

Dumb husbands and fathers and wives who put them in their place. Can you imagine what would happen if the gender roles were reversed?

And this is why I watch ZERO modern television. I honestly don't know how fellow conservatives can sit through any of that garbage without tossing their TV out the windows.

If it's not tuned to a classic channel, my TV is off.

In all fairness, a lot of those cliches haven't really been a thing since the '90s. Sitcoms have become a lot more three-dimensional in the 21st Century, at least the ones not airing on CBS.
