So if Eddie didn’t drive to Wally’s to go to the meeting how did he get there? He didn’t walk over in those Italian shoes. Wonder why the Barons always picked them up? Probably to show Ward and June how unrestrained they were in those fast cars.

I said this before but I don’t see what was so great about those head Barons. Eddie and Wally were much more attractive. I know they were rich and reckless.

I can see why Wally didn't want to join. A bunch of hapless nerds...

They remind me of the guys we named The Swoop Brothers.
They would "swoop in" on unexpecting girls.

Just watched it. What a hokey episode.

If there was a 'bottom 10' list this one would be on it. By production number this one would have aired in Oct. 1961 but ABC delayed it to May 26, 1962--I can see why.

If Eddie wanted to join a club with cool guys, wouldn't you think casting would find some cool guys, not some nerdy looking creeps?

Definitely a late 50's to early 60s ( pre-1963 ) Corvette. Can't tell if the other is an MG or an Austin-Healy.

Glad you dug this thread up especially since I started it. Yup those guys were really nerdy and how could Bessie say Rick was dreamy? Dreamy? She acted like he looked like Gregory Peck. They were all a bunch of creepy anthropoids. I agree why couldn’t they have gotten some bleach blond surfer dudes as the Barons.

My favorite line is when Beaver says to his mother remember last year when I wanted to be an atomic scientist (Huh?) I change my mind I want to be a Baron then screeches around her like he’s in a race car like a 7 year old.

OK, here is my interpretation. The Barons were snobby, negative jerks - that was the whole point. They had the cachet around the school of being cool guys but actually they were just spoiled, arrogant brats. That is why Wally had an inkling early on that they were not worth hanging around with, and he was right.

The only problem with the episode, IMO, is that they never show the club meeting, only tell about it after the fact. One of the cardinal rules of screenwriting is show don't tell. They should have at least had a short scene of the club meeting where we saw how vapid these guys were and maybe showed Wally walking out on them. All in all, I think it is a solid episode with a good moral.

I guess they figured the scene in the cafeteria would suffice.

And since when can students opt to go off the premises for lunch, as they supposedly decided to do (after nerd 1 threw away Eddie's pudding)?

I rated "One of the Boys " 4 out of 10. That was generous. The Barons being miscast couldn't be overcome.

Yup they were spoiled and arrogant but really creepy. I think the only one who found them quite prestigious was Eddie cuz they had money.

The only other thing wrong with the episode was where Beaver made those childish car noises, imitating the Barons' flashy cars.

We had an open campus. You could leave for lunch.

Class of 74 here Saugus MA

we had open campus - could leave for study halls / lunch whatever

we also had the cigarette smoking circle which was a grass rotary in front of school where the bus's lined up - so much weed being smoked out there as well

also in Mass the drinking age in 72 dropped to 18, so we could legally drink alcohol at our senior prom ... later it retreated to 19, then 20 then 21

def wild times
