I have just started watching Cheers The Complete First Season on DVD and I noticed that when Diane Chambers makes her debut at Cheers it is rumored that Diane was a teacher and I wondered if Shelley Long modeled the character Diane Chambers after one of her family members who was a teacher or a high school teacher from Shelley Long's high school years?. Because I never knew this fact until I started watching Cheers on DVD

I don't think she was a teacher. She was a graduate student at Boston University before she came to Cheers.

Diane was not a teacher per se. She was Sumner Sloane's teaching assistant at BU for nearly 2 years.

I wonder if they wrote the part of Harry "The Hat" just for him.
