View Full Version : Grandma Romano

Some of the episodes that revolve around her I find unbearable, she whines worse than a child.

I personally like her , but I can see what you mean!;) As much as she was on was fine, maybe more would have been annoying! ;)
But I kind of have ulterior motives! :D The eps, that she really was in a lot were later seasons, and that is when Julie's Husband Max was there and I LOVE MAX!!! So I kind of associate her presence with Max!! :D :eyes:
who8mycookie 10-14-2017, 02:05 AM I like you do like the Max character. I am glad they were able to keep him on the show without Julie.
I think Grandma annoyed on any birthday episode: the one where Julie leaves (at least off screen), the one with Ann taking her to lunch, and the Barbara bday episode they were locked in the store. I might have to try you way of viewing her, thinking about the Max episodes. That might help make her appearance more bearable.
Svenfan1234 10-14-2017, 03:21 PM I actually like her.
PracTz 10-14-2017, 04:04 PM I actually like her.
Me,too! Not only was played by the great comedienne Miss Fabray but I also like that Grandma was often the only one to be able to stop steamroller Ann from overwhelming everyone else . Best of all, she was the ONLY adult who actually was hands-on in raising her infant great-granddaughter after Julie's flight while the others were 'doing their own thing'.

Huh? The only one? No!! Max was a very good, loving , hands on single Father !:) Aunt Barbara also did a lot in the care of Annie as well! :) Even Schneider babysat for Annie one time! ;) They had to go to work though and Grandma didn't , so therefore she had a lot of time to care for a baby! Plus Barbara, Mark and Max let her live at their house ! So in exchange, help with the baby care and house chores! ;)
Ann didn't seem to do to much in raising Annie , but she didn't live with them.;)
PracTz 10-15-2017, 03:09 PM Bonnie Girl,
OK, I wasn't fair to the others but Grandma DID do the bulk of caring for her infant great-granddaughter. However; I think Ann herself should have been more (not less) called out re her evident oblivious to her namesake's fate.
In any case, I LIKED Grandma Romano who often kept the show from becoming too depressing by her positive tude!
Anna Karenina 10-15-2017, 04:08 PM It was kind of strange to me about the lack of interaction between Ann Romano and her namesake.
I wonder why she didn't have much to do with her. Did they EVER have a scene with just the two of them? Kinda weird. I don't think this was a Bonnie Franklin decision this time just an oversight by the writers.
Don't get me started on how Ed didn't even get an onscreen chance to even MEET his granddaughter.

OMG, I cannot stand that woman. I especially hate when she goes "OOOOHHHH" as she's pinching the girls cheeks. She is so effing annoying in my opinion.

Yeah, no doubt she could be annoying but that was true for most of the characters on this show at one time or another.
Ann and Schneider and Julie were even MORE annoying in my opinion although I enjoyed them anyway.
Early Julie and Ann were like nails on a chalkboard.
Prepubescent Barbara laughing at her own jokes was annoying as well.
Mark's ill fitting jacket was annoying.
Can you name a character on this show that wasn't annoying at one time or another?
Everybody is a little annoying. I annoy myself on a daily basis.
Wawwie 10-15-2017, 05:38 PM When mother Romano was working at Ann's office, she was super annoying. She was also impossible during her visit when Ann was sick. I could name lots more incidents, too. Actually, Alex was the most annoying, then I would pick Mother Romano as second.

Wawwie,
What about Julie having ear piercing tantrums throughout much of the first season when she didn't get her way on something?
Or Ann and her overly dramatic acting with those god awful closeups on her face?
"Damn it, Everybody!"
Katherine certainly passed her annoying gene onto her daughter and granddaughters.
Yes, Alex as much as I loved him was as annoying as hell. But his father Nick that self righteous ***** was even more annoying in my opinion. So much so that they killed him off and pretty much never looked back.

Ann's biggest drama queen moment was either when she was having a crisis on her 36th birthday  or when she threw a pity party for herself after learning of Barbara's engagement.
Julie was annoying when she demanded to go to that fancy private school that her friend went to. Her constant caterwauling in that episode was unbearable.

I was thinking of those moments too.
Ann being traumatized at turning 36 was laughable. Total Emmy bait! She thought she was Maude or something with her histrionic monologue.
Julie acting like a (rhymes with punt) about attending that school was only rivaled by Ann cavalierly tearing up Nick's checks when he generously offered to help her out. Then yeah, Ann got another mid life crisis ep, only this time Katherine actually acted like a normal person and helped pull her out of it, along with Dwayne of course. I have said this before but that episode would have worked better if it was a delayed, cathartic reaction to losing Nick suddenly like that. Otherwise what the heck was she so overly upset about?
What the heck did David see in that harpie? Some men like being mentally abused, I guess.
Wawwie 10-15-2017, 06:23 PM There was an episode where Ann punched and hit Sam for NO reason at all. She was just jealous that Sam "babied" his ex wife. Still, Ann was a total shrew in that episode, and I would have liked to knock her out myself after she attacked Sam. I guess Ann thinks it's okay for a woman to hit a man, but not the other way around. Who's the sexist? Hypocrite?

Actually, he did taunt her about possibly having her monthly visitor but that was no excuse for physical violence. Poor Ed, how many times did he get that same kind of treatment off screen.
And also remember she harassed some guy sexually and got away with it with the guy quitting instead of HER getting fired or even suspended.
It was Ann Romano's world and they all just lived in it...

OMG, Ann totally sexually harassed that poor man assistant. She deserved to get fired. Just another example of her double standard hypocrisy.

The fun part of it though was Mr. Connors calling her out on her shenanigans.
He really mocked her as did Max, Julie and Barbara.
One of the few times in the show she was the object of ridicule and not the so called moral authority on everything.
Another being the time she shacked up with a married man which was just pathetic.
Of course Julie the former Holy Roller was pretty much on board with her mother's adultery but Barbara had the temerity to say what a skank she was being. (paraphrasing of course!)
Later on Ann scolded Julie about her own skankiness when she cheated on Max for whatever contrived reason.
Glass houses, Ann. ;)
Svenfan1234 10-15-2017, 08:11 PM Some people...
I liked Ann. Julie was mildly annoying in season 1. I liked Grandma Romano. I liked Alex. I didn't have anybody I blatantly hated, though I disliked Francine and I disliked Sam, even though I love Howard Hesseman as Johnny Fever on WKRP.
My thoughts. My opinions.

Ann seems like the type who had many double standards. And didn't Julie take it back that she cheated on Max? The one about her male assistant was weird but she can also be at times.
After all, none of us are flawless. We're a work in progress.

I thought she like said she didn't in another part of the episode. But then there was the part where she said she didn't know if Max cheated, but she knew she did... Idk.

Yeah, poor Max. He was such a saint to put up with Julie, huh?;) Especially at those out-of-town conventions about how to make donuts.:)
Bonniegirl 10-15-2017, 10:29 PM What do you mean by "she took it back"?
Yeah!!! Julie DIDN'T take it back!!:nonono: She wasn't just making that up! She REALLY had slept with another man! She wouldn't have told her Sister and Mother about it had she made it up! Maybe to make her Husband jealous she would make up that!;) But in this case that wasn't so!:( She wasn't even going to tell Max about her infidelity , except she blurted it out in anger (and insecurity) when a pretty female co worker of Max's came to the apartment to pick up Max to take him to the airport so the dear , sweet , responsible man could get back to his job with the airline .:( Julie got WAY jealous and insecure due to her pregnancy hormones kicking in and she blurted out that she had the affair!! :(
But YES she surely WAS unfaithful to her dear , sweet, nice , loving faithful hard working Hubby Max! :(

YES!! SO MEAN!!!:( How was the poor guy supposed to serve meals and drinks and be personable to the passengers on the airplane with this all on his mind!!  :(
I mean it was the early 80's! There wasn't nearly as many terrorist threats and all that, flying wasn't as stressful, so the flight attendants probably did feel like it was more of a laid back working environment ;) but STILL with your wife just laying a bombshell like that on you, how was he supposed to be expected to not be distracted and do his job well?? :(

Julie was so self centered about his job. At least he contributed to the family income unlike that slatty slacker.
Then later on she has him quit that job to become a writer which he does and then she chides him for doing that when it was her idea in the first place!
There was no winning with her.
But they were both ridiculous with that underwater birth stuff.

Yeah!! I think their relationship was so TOTALLY based on sexual attraction /chemistry !!! :happyface I mean if Max was willing to lose his best friend to not just maybe fool around with his best Friend's fiance ( men will be men and if they are attracted to the girl and horny) but to actually want to MARRY her , have her leave her intended for him! Well that is WOW!!!! And for her to go for it is even more WOW!!!
So I think they were TOTALLY sexually compatible but THAT was it!! It drew the line there, they really weren't meant for each other !!:( Nothing in common, bored with each other when things were going good and normal! They THRIVED on pure animal lust and when they were fighting it really fueled that spark!! :happyface
But when you think about it , it was actually JULIE, and not Max who realized this and broke off this toxic relationship !;) But she shouldn't have put her baby in the middle of the mess, abandoned her child! That was wrong! :(

Well, it seems the writers were deliberately throwing Julie under the bus to get back at Mack.
I did sense genuine love between them though in the "Love and Marriage" scene which by the way LOGO restored parts of that I never saw before.
Sven, are you still here? I just mentioned LOGO!

who8mycookie 10-15-2017, 11:46 PM I never found any character on any show to not have an annoying moment, my point of my thread was basically about Grandma Romano. I only asked because I did not see another post about her and wondered if I was in the minority here and missing some great quality her character possessed. I did not mean to start any arguments, I apologize if my original post did.
They all had annoying moments but for me Grandma Romano seemed to be in a whiney role that was constant, just my opinion. Alex I just didn't care for the character, I am not a fan of adding another kid when the original kids grow up. Ann could be a bitter pill at times, they all could be I admit that. I just found moments with them that were annoying rather than overall character like I did with the grandmother.

Smiley13 10-22-2017, 12:51 PM I made a post a couple of weeks ago about how annoying Nanette Fabray is in the role of Grandma Romano and I only got two responses. At least you got some good show conversation going. :)
I found her to be gratingly awful in this part.
