No. There was no camaraderie between the two of us. I was like one of the boys with (co-star) Morey (Amsterdam) and (producers) Sheldon Leonard and Danny Thomas, ’cause I knew them from the beginning. And she was pretty, gorgeous figure and all of those things. Mary was in one direction and I was in another.

However; I think after the show was done, they did at least maintain cordial ties- and when Miss Moore died, Rose Marie was quite broken up and sorry the younger woman had had to suffer from her conditions for so long.

This is a stretch but what if Rose saw right through Mary's parade? Mary Tyler Moore depending on whom you ask, excelled (at least as Laurie Petrie) at carrying a "fake, polite, passive aggressive" nature. This is likely why she was perfect for something like Ordinary People, where she played a woman who really has no empathy for mess, or relationships that are genuine.

Is it true that Rose resented Mary because she thought she was supposed to be the female lead? Rose was relegated to supporting status once Mary became a breakout star and the show began focusing more and more on the Petrie home life and less and less on Rob's work life.

How many of you who are employed are friends with people you work with? I am not saying that one dislikes their co-workers and can get along with them very well in a work environment and even have respect for them. But at the end of the day when people clock out, they go home to their families and see their true friends. That is not to say that a lot of people are not friends, even lifetime friends with people they work with, and do, but more than likely, when someone is seperated from their jobs through whatever means, you never see those people again, because we dont care to be.

I think we are under an allusion that actors who play characters who are best friends are that off screen. Or an ensamble of people who work together on a show maintain a lifetime friendship. Sometimes this is so, but again, this is work and not everyone likes everyone. It is not like that one person hates another, and again, they might have respect and even admiration of the other person in a work environment, but again, after work and at the end of work, people seperate. That's life.

It is interesting that in the Mary Tyler Moore Show there are rough correlations to all of the continuing Dick van Dyke Show characters except: (1) the couple Rob and Laura become the single woman Mary; and, (2) Sally disappears. Murray is Mary's friend in the office and, like Buddy, insults Ted/Mel. Rhoda, like Millie, is Mary's home friend, but she also gets Sally's "I can't hold onto a man" jokes. The character Sally just drops out.

Rose Marie, born 1923, was certainly not out of the age range relative to Dick Van Dyke's 1925. But I think many like myself would have a difficult time imagining her playing Rob's wife. The producers found a cuteness and prettiness in MTM that would be hard for many women to come even close to, not to mention they were able to draw upon MTM's dancing abilities.
