What I mean is when people (usually teenagers and people in there 20's) say that is so gay. That really offends me that when someone doesn't like something they say it is gay. Or if someone doesn't like someone else they'll go for instance mr. miller is so gay. ( that example is of a student talking about a teacher) Does this annoy any one else.

That gay crack annoys me too, as well as when someone calls someone a ****** or says something is ********.

I can't stand it when I hear people using the word "gay" as an insult. These people don't seem to realise that all they are doing is making themselves look really ignorant.

The 2 things above annoy me to no end.

Also, when someone says "Jeeze, are you on meds or soemthing?" and they start cracking up afterwards. I hate that, because some people are on meds. Just because your on meds doesn't make you a nut. It makes me feel awful when people say that.

omg, ppl agree with me. i get so offended when they do that, even if they're joking or whatever. they go "omg, we have a test tomorrow, how gay!" and then i tell them to not say that and they get all over my case about how it's not "offensive" and all. it's just an insult. it's, to me, like sticking your middle finger up at someone you know? it's just annoying and i want em to stop.

There was a time when all these words were used and no one thought it was hurting anyone.

Times have changed though and everything is more in the open. Believe it or not I've learned alot from reading these boards as to how people react about words and stuff. I think if a person doesn't like certain words they should just post it or write letters. Educate the public because sometimes we don't know what hurts anymore.

Ugh...I hate when people say, "That's so gay!" Okay, a couple of weeks ago I was over at one of my friends houses and we were sitting outside on her trampoline and I asked her if she thought being gay was "bad" and she said no. So then at school everyday shes like, "I hate her...she's gay!" Although whoever she's talkin about isn't. And that's why she hates Pink because she thinks shes gay...or something. Geezus. If something I find comes under one of those categories, I'll say it looks gay! What I WON'T say is it looks 'homosexual'!

Lemme explain...there ARE homosexuals that DO fall into the above stereotypical descriptions. However...using the word 'gay' does NOT necessarily mean 'homosexual in nature'. Remember...the literal meaning of the word has been around LONG before the slang term for a 'homosexual'!

Now...'********' is another story! To call someone a '******' is IMO a very callous thing to say!

It's perfectly ok to use the word "gay" if you mean it in it's proper context. If you say something is gay and you mean that it is "bright and lively in appearance" then that is fine. That isn't what this thread is about though. This thread is about people who use the word "gay" - meaning 'homosexual' - as an insult.
I totally agree with what Indigo said. I too get extremly angry when I walk down the street and hear kids yelling "oh sh#t dude - that so f#cking gay!!!!!". When did "gay" become a term of insult? And more importantly, since when was being "gay" a bad thing?
People make me so mad sometimes I could smack 'em. I have attempted to figure these people out. Once I actually pulled a kid up about it when she said something was "gay". I asked her why she chose that word - why couldn't she say it was "stupid", or "daft" or "crap". And what was her response? She kinda looked at me for a couple of seconds and said "sh#t - I dunno man, it's just gay!"
That's the kind of mentality these people have. Sad, isn't it?

And I've often wondered how the word evolved into a 'catch phrase' for homosexuals?

And PLEASE don't get me wrong here...I'm not trying to pin a label on anyone! It's just that these days it's getting to be a real struggle trying NOT to offend anyone. And I'm sorry...but some homosexuals appear to be more 'gay' (in the true meaning of the word) than others.

And as far as using the word 'gay' to describe a "lousy situation"...well, that would just be wrong. Morally AND grammatically!

We were talking about this in our Bible Study group. (I'ma Catholic BTW) And we were talking all about Homosexuality and they said as long as you don't act on the sex or get tempted you have sex, it's okay to be gay. I mean the church doesn't say it's wrong, because we are all human beings, but acting on your temptation is wrong, like any other sin.

Well any sex in general is a sin if your not married LOL. But I meant any kind of sex. Straight sex without marriage is a sin in the Catholic church too.

Actually yeah, I think that describing a falmboyant person as "gay" is kind of offensive. There are a lot of flamboyant people who aren't nesessarily gay and visa versa. The idea that all gay people are flamboyant is a stereotype, and stereotypes are a dangerous thing.

You almost sound like my father. He's always moaning on about how he's not sure what things he can say and what he can't because the "poofs" have "stolen all our words". He thinks that gay people have stolen words like 'gay' and 'dyke' and now he can't use them in their proper context anymore. My father is a bigot of the highest order - you've no idea what I have to put up with! I can relate to what Indigo has to endure from teachers at her school cos I have to hear it every day at home.

OMG, I know what you mean. My parents are really weird on the subject and it makes us Catholics looks sooo horrible and it's just a shame. But I still stick firm to my beliefs. As long as I know what's wrong and stay abstinent until I get married (Which I really believe in no matter what) then I know that I did the right thing.

Pontoon's - to use newpaper jargon - 'Other View' opened the subject of evolving language. I was thinking about evolving language today and had begun to organize and write down my thoughts about it. But then I happened on to a paragraph in an essay that I was reading, which fortunately or unfortunately (I'm not sure which because I would rather have written the paragraph myself), says just what I wanted to say, and more, about the mystery, invention and the evolution of language.

We had choir rehersal yesterday and it was in the gym and this guy walked by and this stupid preppy popular girl behind me goes "******!!!!!" really loud. And I thought of you guys and I was talking to my friend and I said (LOUD) "God...That was so rude! Doesn't she know that people are offended by that?! LIKE ME?!!??" and i turned around and she gave me a dirty look. Ahaha. It was great.

though. The ones who show their stupidity and use
