JamesG 09-28-2017, 04:35 PM "Family Matters" Mom Jo Marie Payton Addresses Early Exit: "I Don't Regret That I Left"
by Gerrard Hall
Sept. 28, 2017
When "Family Matters", which ran on ABC for eight seasons as part of TGIF, made the jump to CBS for its ninth, and ultimately final, season, it was a bittersweet moment.
“The last episode was really emotional, I think, for all of us,” Darius McCrary, who played Eddie Winslow, tells EW for the show’s recent cast reunion. “We pretty much knew that once the show had switched networks from ABC to CBS that it was a wrap. … If it was in today’s game, it would have been a different story because of social media. There was a voice that the audience just didn’t have back then.”
After 215 episodes, Jaleel White’s Steve Urkel finally got the girl he had been pining for all those years, Kellie Shanygne Williams’ Laura Winslow. Upon his return from outer space — where NASA sent him to test his anti-gravity invention, which throws a satellite off course, causing it to collide with the spaceship, the crew of which Urkel then has to save (DRAMA!) — he and Laura are finally engaged.
“I remember the last episode very vividly. Very vividly, actually,” White recalls. “What I remember most is I ‘one-taked’ the show. … It was like every scene I nailed it to the best of my ability. And then, I just remembered at the end of the show it was Kellie and Darius there and we’re about to go out to say bye to the audience and that’s when I broke. That’s when the tears started running.”
“I was there on intros,” Williams remembers. “I already knew that I would miss seeing you guys. I knew that my life would be different. … I just remember experiencing the tremendous loss. I spent probably 42 weeks a year at Telma [Hopkins’] house during the weekends. She was like my other mother, [and] Jo Marie. These people are family, and to not have that same amount of time and energy with them was difficult for a long time.”
“It feels like a divorce,” Jo Marie Payton explains.
Interestingly, Reginald VelJohnson used the same word to describe his experience of working with a new actress when Payton decided to leave the series halfway through the final season, making her final appearance in the Dec. 19, 1997 episode — her 200th. (Judyann Elder took over the role for the last nine episodes.)
“It was hard for me after nine years of doing something with one person. It’s like getting a divorce and then marrying somebody else,” VelJohnson, who played family patriarch Carl, says. “It was weird.”
“No disrespect to Judyann … but I felt like my mom was gone, you know? I did my job as an actor, but there were just so many things that had gone on behind the scenes that the audience wasn’t privy to that had kind of already shut it down,” McCrary explains of the unique situation.
If Payton had her way, though, she would’ve been gone a couple years earlier.
“I actually made the decision to leave the show two years before I left. I was unhappy about a lot of things; I was going through a divorce, I wasn’t happy on the show — it didn’t mean I did not want to perform as an actress or an artist,” Payton reveals. “The way I explain it is that, when you’re a baker, you don’t always want to bake cakes or cookies; you want to bake pies, you want to bake bread. I wanted to do something else.”
“I don’t regret that I left.”

Jaimee Foxworth was not asked (https://www.theroot.com/jaimee-foxworth-speaks-out-about-not-being-invited-to-e-1819015695) to be apart of the shoot.
JO Sweet Heart 09-30-2017, 08:50 PM ^^^ Thanks for the link. To me, that girl shouldn't have been cold shouldered especially when she has grown up now.
God bless you and her always!!!

No Judy? What a slap in the face. Shame on EW.

I found this 53 minute special using interviews from the recent reunion.
Not the best picture or audio quality, however.
At the end, Jo Marie Payton (of all people, haha) said that they would all love to do a reunion (either an updated series or one of those TV movie reunions). I don't know if it's such a great idea, although I know I'd watch it, but I love that they're all willing to do it as some actors tend not to want to go back to a previous role.

At the 45:41 mark the narrator said that "Midway through the 9th season the hit series lost its very first cast member." That was a pretty negligent statement.
DJM77 10-01-2017, 05:56 PM And he said that Family Matters is the 3rd longest running African-American sitcom. What African-American sitcom has had a longer run than Family Matters besides The Jeffersons?

If people you worked with 20 years ago got together and shared some pictures on social media would you be mad because you weren't there? Hell No right..... you would look at the pictures and be excited like awww damn such and such looks good right! I LOVE THEM IN BLUE! Exactly it was my JOB 20 years ago they aint all go get a check with out me. The cast nor producers put the reunion together! Entertainment Weekly and Jaleel's manager did. I've always been a Johnson never a Winslow. I was a guest star on the show not a series regular. Shawn called me before a little pissed Jaimee and I weren't invited and I told him go have fun Jaimee and I will be ok. To be really real I didn't even know who Entertainment Weekly was because I'm so far removed from the "hollywood" I'm more "Holly from the hood who gets good jobs". I was approached about doing interviews on "Why I wasn't invited?" but felt it was lame and not my position to explain you can never please everyone.
While I appreciate the fact I was missed ya'll support me and have my back black social media is ruthless. I tried to ignore addressing it at all because its silly. But some of ya'll want there to be some cattiness where for me there is none! Many of my castmates I aint seen for 20 years because my job is over we graduated to other things doesn't mean anybody has a problem with anybody. It's beautiful anytime a group of black people together its all Peace! I joyed seeing them together. Life's short lets joy every beautiful moment we can together and remember what really Matters~ Family Matters! (I had get in on the silliness but for real) people texting my phone like Why they aint invite you? Im like mmm when you not invited to a party does the host call and explain to you why you weren't invited? Btw Hi how you doing? Lmfao the internets gotta chill ya'll crazy! Look what somebody did. I cant find the one that had Judy looking down the stairs hahahaha

I just rewatched it and I interpret it as them saying they lost their very first cast member as in she was the first one cast back in '89.
Adamantium 10-03-2017, 04:58 AM While it was great seeing them all together and talking about the show, the special missed a few key points to discuss, such as Judy disappearing, Telma Hopkins leaving (and then returning on a recurring basis), Shawn Harrison leaving, and Michelle Thomas! There was no mention of Myra AT ALL!

That could be. I didn't think of it that way.

I'll skip that one.

I kind of wonder if the Michelle Thomas situation may have been something they weren't comfortable talking about it as it was a situation that came on pretty quickly (she didn't get diagnosed until after season 8 had already completed and she really would have been getting sick while they were trying to film season 9).
Old School 08-07-2021, 09:18 PM I saw that the other video link to the reunion is not active anymore so I decided to re-link this reunion for those who may have missed and/or wanted to watch it again. Btw- whatever happened to the reboot idea discussed during the reunion interview?
The main cast: Carl Winslow (Reginald VelJohnson), Harriette Winslow (Jo Marie Payton), Mother Winslow (Rosetta LeNoire RIP), Laura Winslow (Kellie Shanygne-Williams), Eddie Winslow (Darius McCrary), Judy Winslow (Jaimee Foxworth), Aunt Rachel (Telma Hopkins), Little Richie (Bryton James), Steven Urkel (Jaleel White). Gotta shout out Baby Richie (Joseph/Julius Wright), Original Judy Winslow (Valerie Jones), Max (Cherie Johnson), Waldo Geraldo Faldo (Shawn Harrison), Myra (Michelle Thomas RIP), Greta (Tammy Townsend), Weasel (Shavar Ross) & 3J (Orlando Brown)...they all played a part in the success of the show at different points.

EW reunited the cast of Family Matters — and they're ready for a series revival 'Family really did matter and still does'
It’s been nearly 20 years since Reginald VelJohnson, who played Carl Winslow for nine seasons on Family Matters, had a formal reunion with his TV family.
“I love these people… Every one of them,” the famous TV dad, 65, said when he and the cast recently got together for the latest issue of EW. “I didn’t realize I was going to see everybody. … To see them now, the way they are, is wonderful. It’s heartwarming. It makes me cry.”
There were occasional tears but mainly laughs on the staple of ABC’s TGIF block of family-friendly programming (where it lived before moving to CBS for its ninth and final season). The comedy — which signed off July 17, 1998 after 215 episodes — was a spin-off of Perfect Strangers, on which Jo Marie Payton’s Harriette Winslow was an elevator operator at the building where cousins Larry and Balki (Mark Linn-Baker and Bronson Pinchot) worked. (Both shows, plus other TGIF favorites such as Full House and Step by Step, are available Friday on Hulu.)
Harriette and her police-officer husband, Carl, had a full house of their own: Kellie Shanygne Williams, Darius McCrary, and Jaimee Foxworth were their children Laura, Eddie, and Judy (who was written out of the show during season 4); Telma Hopkins played Rachel, Harriette’s widowed live-in sister, and Bryton James was Rachel’s son, Richie; Rosetta LeNoire played Estelle, a.k.a. “Mother Winslow”; Shawn Harrison was Eddie’s dim-witted friend Waldo; and White was their next-door neighbor, Steve Urkel — an iconic TV nerd before The Big Bang Theory gang was even a particle in the pop culture universe.
“It just feels so natural and so normal,” Hopkins explained of getting back together. “It’s like we haven’t been apart all these years.”
And if they had their way, they wouldn’t be apart much longer. In a day and age where revivals of old sitcoms are all the rage — Full House (as Fuller House), Will & Grace, and Roseanne among them — this cast seems ready to jump at the chance to bring their Chicago clan back to the small screen.

“Jaleel and I were talking just a little while ago and he said, ‘You know, we can do this.’ And I said, ‘If they dropped a script at our feet when we walked out of here, we would come back in tomorrow, and the next day we’d have a show shot,” Payton said about how quickly and easily they could fall back into their roles.
“Because we all have that rhythm,” Williams chimed in. Added Hopkins: “And we haven’t lost it. As soon as we’re together, it’s back to normal.”
VelJohnson admitted he’s curious what scientist and inventor Steve Urkel would be up to today, but more so, he’d like to see the show come back to “give a new perspective on things that are happening today from our point of view.”
And Payton, who said everyone is “ready to do it,” knows exactly how the revival should start: “I think the first scene should be Judy coming down those steps and everybody saying, ‘Where you been?'”
“There’s just something really magical about this cast and the real feelings that are here. It wasn’t just for the screen,” Hopkins concluded. “Family really did matter and still does.”
All nine seasons of Family Matters — plus other ABC comedies and TGIF titles including Full House, Step by Step, and Home Improvement — available now on Hulu.
JO Sweet Heart 08-08-2021, 11:38 AM ^^^ To me, Jaleel should be holding a picture of the girl that gave us Myra since Reginald holds a picture of the lady who gave us Carl's mom.
God bless you always!!!
