"Party of Five" may be returning to the small screen. Original series creators Chris Keyser and Amy Lippman are readying a reboot of their former Fox drama with an immigration twist.
The original "Party of Five" ran for six seasons and focused on five siblings who unite as a family after their parents are killed in a car crash. The reboot would be about a first-generation Latino family who have immigrated to the U.S. and are living through the highs and lows as they learn to make it in a new country.
The reboot is in the early stages — a network is not yet attached — and producers Sony Pictures Television Studios have yet to hear the pitch, sources say. Sony TV declined comment.

Nearly 20 years after it wrapped its six-season run, "Party of Five" is returning to TV. Disney-owned cable network Freeform has handed out a sizable put-pilot order for a reboot of the Fox drama from original series creators Chris Keyser and Amy Lippman.
The new series was first reported three months ago and will be featuring an immigration-oriented take on the original. The revival will follow the five Buendias children as they navigate daily life struggles to survive as a family unit after their parents are suddenly deported back to Mexico.
Sources tell THR that Freeform exec vp development Karey Burke aggressively pursued the "Party of Five" revival as the young-skewing cable network heads into 2018 with a plan to air originals on four nights a week as it will use its notable film library to help boost scripted fare.
Keyser and Lippman will write the pilot alongside Michal Zebede (Castle), with Rodrigo Garcia (The Affair) set to direct. Keyser, Kippman and Garcia will also exec produce; Zebede will co-exec produce and write.

Concurrent with the DACA debate, immigration has become a hot topic this pilot season. “It’s such a present issue,” says Party of Five co-creator Amy Lippman, who is behind the immigration reboot of her 1990s Fox drama. “It’s unavoidable and heartbreaking and it’s on the news every single night. And all these show creators are feeling that same incredibly rich source of storytelling.” Lippman says she doesn’t mind there being so many shows focused on immigrants on the works: “Nobody ever said, why are there two shows about white people and white people’s families? It’s at the heart of the debate about what this country is and what it’s going to be,” she adds. “It triggers all of that.”

Party of Five reboot aims to educate about immigration -- its biggest change is that the parents aren't dead (https://www.thewrap.com/party-of-five-reboot-will-re-create-1-scene-from-the-original-pilot-but-dont-expect-any-salingers/)
Creators Amy Lippman and Chris Keyser want the reboot to show the realities of the immigration system. “We don’t want to go in with a strong political agenda, we just want to tell what it’s like for these families,” said Lippman, adding that the parents “are not present, but they are dealing with how do we try to parent our kids from a distance, how do the kids deal in with social services, how is their footprint in the community different?” Lippman also said at the TV press tour: "We’ve had lots of opportunities to revisit the story and we waited until there was a good reason to do it. As we began to see stories like this on the front page of every newspaper, we began to realize what was originally the story of five orphans 25 years ago had sort of transmogrified into the story of these kids who are living without their parents in a very real way."
