No offense to the ODAAT clique, but I posted this separate as an FYI for those who are interested, but aren't into all the Max/Barbara chatter :)

Let's keep this thread on-track for those who only want to discuss the DVD set and not derail into a Facebook-style free-for-all.

The listing confirms that Shout! Factory is releasing it. I'm not sure if that was confirmed before the Amazon listing.

Seems decent to me.

Keep in mind it will decrease closer to release day. It'll probably go down to at least $99.

The big question is How many discs - which would give a good idea of the quality - compression and all that. A Dual Layered disc could easily hold 10 episodes with low compression. So could be looking at 22 discs at most, allowing for extras and stuff.

I guess I will be the "Bah Humbug" here and say that I think the price is WAY too high for a 40 something year old show.

I am kind of disappointed in that respect. :(

I remember getting the first season the first day at FYE years ago and it was very reasonably priced but even then it didn't sell very well.

In any case they really need to "wop on the beat" and promote this thing. ;)

I'm a cheapskate sometimes on these shows, Mrs T and I did take a loan out so we could buy the entire series of Dark Shadows however, okay not quite, but it was spendy and that was one of our rare splurges.
Loved I was able to pick up King Of Queen the complete series for $19.

209 episodes, an unknown amount of extras (perhaps they will dig up CBS material from the era as well) and the possibility of the unaired pilot (If they remembered it! - a copy is sitting at UCLA!) over 27 discs.

The price isn't bad for what it is.

The question still remains if any editing or music changes for rights issues will affect the set.

This is it! The One You've Been Waiting For!

Bonnie Franklin, Mackenzie Phillips, and Valerie Bertinelli star in One Day At A Time, the lively and liberated sitcom classic developed by Norman Lear, the television legend behind All In The Family, Maude, The Jeffersons, and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.

One Day At A Time follows Ann Romano (Franklin), an independent woman who transplants herself and her two daughters – rebellious Julie (Phillips) and smart aleck Barbara (Bertinelli) – to Indianapolis in search of a new life. Moving into an apartment under the watchful eye and ever-present swagger of the building's quirky superintendent Schneider (Pat Harrington), the Romano women muddle through life, love, and laughs as they discover their own potential.

One of the most successful sitcoms of the 1970s and 1980s, One Day At A Time ran for nine hilarious and heartfelt seasons, won three Golden Globe Awards, and is finally available as a complete series set! With over 200 episodes, you're in for hours of laughter with the Romanos ... so go and have a ball!

I still think it is way too high but I am satisfied with what is currently on the SWN. Considering the upcoming release I bet her videos will be taken down soon though. Watch or download them while one can. ;)

I wonder if any of the actors will get a percentage of the DVD profits.

That depends on the wording of their original/renewed contracts.

"Other Forms of Distribution" clause.

Walt Disney was actually the first to put something to that affect in contracts and he was thinking beyond TV as well going back to the 1940's.

However, it is possible that they had to go back and negotiate with the actors/estates for the DVD release, or "consideration" is given in lieu of contractually having to give something. (Adam West was supposedly given a "Consideration" for the DVD set of Batman on top of being paid for extras)

...or they only get paid for extras and commentary and that's it.

That's between Sony,Shout! the actors and the estates.

SAG/AFTRA has some rules in place regarding cut offs of years shows were produced and the requirement of residuals for DVD and "other forms of media" (DVD,Downloads,Streaming) if not written into contracts - which left most of the 1950's-1960's actors out of luck. Not sure of the 1970's or 1980's. (But by the 1980's, the possibility of shows on Video would have been in some contracts)

It is nice having them all in one thing.

Will they be releasing ODAAT individually? They did that with Leave It To Beaver alongside the complete series release. I had already bought the first two seasons that were released years before, so I bought the rest as individual seasons.

I'm sure Shout! will have another sale like they did a couple weeks ago with 30% or so off your purchase. They also have free shipping and no tax.

I suggest waiting a month or so before you preorder to see if the price goes down or if they run a special.

Also the estates of Harrington and Franklin might benefit too.

Well, again it comes down to contracts and "clearing the decks" for release.

Does make you wonder if later contracts gave Val and Bonnie a piece of the show's future earnings...Sounds like something Bonnie might have tried to get knowing how she was :)

$130 isn't a bad price actually, considering this is a nine season show and over 200 episodes. I was thinking the price would be more like $160 or $170. And the price will likely reduce with time, I can see the price for this eventually going below $100. So I won't be an eager beaver and order this right away, I'll wait awhile for a price reduction.

I like the cover box art too, nicely done and displaying the four main characters of the show. Very appropriate. :)

Very pissed for so many reasons and none of them are against the set.

1. Shout Factory decides to release this at the conclusion of their Back to School sale
2. I spent my spare change on Green Acres so I may have to hold off on this release unless they do another sale.

I am so happy that a true classic like this is being released! I have my recording from Comedy Gold so I am not at a complete disadvantage if I don't purchase this for a bit. Hopefully the bonus features are amazing.

Hopefully the bonus features aren't just the reunion released with the season 1 set along with that recently made reunion with Scarpelli and Phillips. There are several bonuses that would make this an even better set.

Shout Factory usually goes by original airdates on their DVD's, so I imagine the 6th season DVD will have 21 episodes, 7th season 25 episodes, 8th season 26 episodes, not 24, 24, and 24.

I've taken all my math credits I need actually!

I don't have to take a Math class this year.

I bought all of those except Mary Hartman and Bob Newhart Show. I was not a fan of Mary Hartman and I already had most of the Bob Newhart seasons so I just picked up the remaining ones later released by Shout.

You should give Mary Hartman a try. It's a bizarre spoof of soap operas, but the 1st season (episodes 1-130) has excellent writing. However, in season 2 (episodes 131-325) different writers took over and the quality of the writing declined. As a result, the series got even more bizarre than it already was. The 2nd season has it's good moments, but unfortunately the momentum from the 1st season didn't transfer over to season 2.

I wonder if VEI will finally come through with Evening Shade and make this one of the best years for classic TV on DVD.

They just released Angie (mostly edited episodes) so why not follow through with their other anxiously awaited sets.

I now have no doubt that we will see releases such as The Hogan Family, Empty Nest and Archie Bunker's Place in the near future since One Day at a Time has finally landed on DVD in complete series format.

This is a show that I never thought would see a complete series release.

Yes that information is correct regarding seasons 6, 7, and 8.

Shout Factory usually goes by original airdates on their DVD's, so I imagine the 6th season DVD will have 21 episodes, 7th season 25 episodes, 8th season 26 episodes, not 24, 24, and 24.

Yes, I expect that - just noted it for reference.

The listing confirms that Shout! Factory is releasing it. I'm not sure if that was confirmed before the Amazon listing.

It was confirmed to me the day Mackenzie Philips and Glenn Scarpelli announced the DVD release because I asked Glenn Scarpelli if it is a Shout! release and he said that it is. I just didn't think to post it on here at the time.

Oh OK, you have a long way to go then. Maybe you'll like the 2nd season better than I do, I don't know, let me know. I just find it lackluster compared to season 1.

Have you watched episode #24 yet? In my opinion that's one of the best episodes of the series, lots of tension and drama.

Of course, we all know about the edits in the "WKRP" set.

Season 1 of "Mister Ed" was screwed up but luckily when they released the complete series set, they fixed it.

I am sure they will do their best. The MAUDE set was fantastic. All the variety show episodes were intact as well as the other instances of songs used. I think Shout waited to release ODAAT last because they figured it would have the smallest return on investment of all the Norman Lear shows and it was between it and ARCHIE BUNKER'S PLACE. I think the reboot helped light a fire under them as well as the fact the reruns on Antenna and Logo have sparked new interest in the original.

LOL, maybe, we'll see. I like the show but I prefer the earlier seasons. I really don't need the 1st season because I have the 1st season DVD set that Sony released several years ago. So aside from that, I'm mainly interested in seasons 2 and 3, maybe also season 4, seasons 5 thru 9 I'm not as much interested in. At this time I'm not planning to get the complete series DVD. If Shout Factory would also release the seasons separately, that I could go for, I'd get seasons 2 and 3, maybe 4 also, then probably stop there.

Yeah!! I wish I could just purchase Seasons 5, 7, 8 and 9 and only pay about 45 to 50 dollars!! ;)

One day at a time A la Carte !!! :D

I got an email confirmation this morning that it was shipped yesterday. I should be getting it tomorrow or Thursday.

Bet you're looking forward to it!

Most of us got email confirmations this morning so we will not be getting our sets until tomorrow or Thursday. I will be getting mine on Wednesday, I checked the tracking and it is already at my post office. If it had not closed for the day, I would have picked it up today.

I haven't got mine yet. The USPS messed up, the item was in my state then went back to Louisville Kentucky, then to Cincinatti Ohio so now my delivery date is unknown. I have no clue why my package is bouncing around like this.

I am hoping that this is some sort of mistake with their tracking system and I will still receive mine today.

That's happened to me too. I hate when that happens.

I checked and mine is arriving tomorrow. It will arrive in my city late tonight so it will be too late to go pick it up. So I have one more day to wait. Thursday will be a ODAAT marathon for me. :D

Someone received their copy today. It looks like the box is the sturdy one that has been used on Facts of Life, Maude and The Jeffersons. And there is a booklet with it.

Received my DVD's today, but not One Day At A Time, about a week ago I ordered the complete series DVD of Good Morning World and it arrived in the mail today.

Good Morning World isn't a favorite show of mine, but it's OK, I've seen episodes on Antenna TV. The DVD's have uncut episodes and I found the set on ebay for 10 dollars and free shipping, and I figured what the heck for 10 bucks it's worth it so I bought it. :)

Getting back to One Day At A Time, I see that the DVD set contains five slipcases, two seasons are combined into each slipcase except for season nine which has it's own slipcase. For those who are soon to receive their sets, enjoy!

Right now, the only way I'd get this DVD set is if someone in my family gives it to me as a gift, or if I eventually find it on line for a bargain price. While the later seasons have some good episodes, I'm mostly interested in seasons 1 thru 4. If Shout Factory would offer those separately I'd go for that.

That is cool. Enjoy your show!! :) EBAY is cool!! I've found lots of good deals there! ;)

Season 9 deserves it's own slipcase, because Max was at his hottest in Season 9!!! ;) :D :eyes:

The Box says "All 208 Episodes" shouldn't that be 209 The Schneider Pilot was ALWAYS part of the series (Shot and aired as an episode), but could that be missing? Or is this just a typo, or is there ANOTHER episode missing and they are covering up for it?

Give it a week an SHOUT! will admit to it once the boxes are widely shipped.

meanwhile, it's still up on youtube for anyone to grab.

Best Buy's list is WRONG, they posted pics of the back of the box up on "Home Theater Forum" - "Retrospect" is listed as one episode, and counted as one, not two, which is how it aired, but "Baby Love" is listed as two episodes still.

Guess they might have found the original 1-hour master for "Retrospect" but not for "Baby Love" (which in it's 2-part version shouldn't be missing anything anyway) but no confirmation on that yet, either - or any missing music if any...

...some days it's better to just stay in bed.

So that could account for the messed up episode count?

Now will someone please post episode run times and go watch the New Years episode to check for Elton

Well, my copy came with two booklets.:D The picture quality of the set is good and so far the episodes are running over 25 mins. Bonnie will not be happy because Michael Lembeck is not featured in any of pics on the front covers of the individual cases(seasons) yet Boyd Gaines is featured.:D

WHAT!!! No Michael !! :( Well that isn't fair!!!

Two booklets? Was one of them for other products from Shout!, or were they both episode guides?

The booklet has a synopsis of the episodes and what year and season it aired. They sent me duplicates by mistake.

Wow. So 8+ more minutes than Logo!

Can you post pics of what the artwork for the seasons and booklets look like please?

I will but probably not until tomorrow....the set resembles a lot the Maude and Facts of Life sets. The box is very sturdy. It isn't the flimsy like the Green Acres box was.

So have we confirmed if any of the BACKGROUND music has been cut-changed-altered. As I recall there was at least a couple of episodes where Elton John Music was used. Then there's always the odd piece of music in the background here and there.

There's also the two part "Jealousy" that was music performance heavy as well.

With what amounts to 5 music-based episodes and a handful with background music the clearances wouldn't be hard unless someone held out.

It was a sweet number that Barbara and Julie did on New years eve at a show that was put on for a retirement home !:) It was well known that Valerie Bertinelli was a big Elton John fan and you can really see that she played this part with heart , she was dressed as Elton John and Julie, looking very pretty was dressed as KiKi Dee and they sang that popular duet from Elton and Kiki that was a popular song from that time "Don't go breaking my heart" !!:)

I've been checking all the episodes on the DVD's for the running times, and I think I found a few problems. At least two episodes that seem edited for sure, and maybe a few more.

The season 5 episode So Long Mom, and the season 6 episode A Tiny Romance both run only 22 minutes, so it looks like these episodes are the edited/syndicated versions.

Most episodes from seasons 2-4 run about 25 minutes, but a few are a little shorter. The last few episodes of season 4 run only about 24:15, can't really say though if these are edited, maybe they started shortening the run times of the episodes near the end of the season, I don't know.

Most episodes from seasons 5 and 6 run about 24 minutes, but I found those two that run only 22 minutes, I believe those must be edited. Perils Of Plastic runs only about 23:30.

I haven't checked seasons 7 and 8 yet but I checked season 9, most of those episodes are about 23:50, a few are a little shorter, Sam's Apartment runs only 23:25, and for whatever reason the last few season 9 episodes are a little longer at 24:45. Strange.

Each DVD in the set starts off with that worrisome disclaimer that says the episodes were taken from the best available sources. That usually indicates that there are problems, and I think I found some.

Shorter episodes shouldn't be a surprise, running times did vary - it's when you have episodes running 22:30 or shorter that you know they are syndicated/CBS Daytime/Edited prints.

Keep in mind we're talking master tapes 42-33 years old and the possibility of old 2"/1" master tapes having some damage or playback issues (or missing!) was always a possibility, so having to use safety edited prints shouldn't be a surprise on an odd handful of episodes.

Network running times did get shorter as the series went on and varying lengths during a season wouldn't be unusual so the variances in season 9 is nothing to worry about. Not unusual for a show to come in a little shorter in it's broadcast versions. There was no rule a show had to be delivered as 25 or 24 minutes solid depending on the season.

So it sounds like (for at least two episodes, not 100% confirmed they are edited or not) Logo DIDN'T have all uncut prints to work from when they ran One Day at a Time, if they even ran "So Long Mom" and "A Tiny Romance".

Another thing I noticed is that Part 1 of the season 4 episode The Married Man doesn't have any closing credits. But maybe the episode originally ran that way.

I haven't checked the run times for seasons 7 and 8 yet, but so far it looks like just those two episodes, So Long Mom and A Tiny Romance are cause for concern since both run only 22 minutes. Either they are edited or maybe they are complete but time compressed? I suppose that's possible.

1960'sTVfan

I checked the run times for seasons 7 and 8, I think all of those are OK, a few run a few seconds shorter but probably nothing is edited. And the odd thing is, the season 8 episodes overall run a little longer than the season 7 episodes. The common episode run time for season 7 is 24:05, for season 8 it's 24:50. Interesting.

I did find another episode from season 6 that may or may not be edited, it's the one titled The Drop Out. It runs 23:05, a full minute shorter than normal, 24:05 is normal for season 6, so either the episode originally ran a minute short or something is edited.

But the two episodes of main concern are So Long Mom and A Tiny Romance since both of those run only 22 minutes.

I didn't plan to check all the episode run times, but yesterday when I put disc 1 of season 2 in my DVD player to watch Part 1 of The Runaways, when that disclaimer popped up on the screen saying that the episodes were taken from best available sources, I said to myself, uh oh I'd better check all the run times first and find out where problems are before I start watching.

I've noticed how the run times of the episodes generally decreased as time went along, as the network was increasing it's advertising/commercial time. The common run time for One Day At A Time season 1 episodes is about 25:30. By season 9, the common run time per episode was down to 23:50. :(

I have to say that Shout Factory did a pretty good job transferring the episodes to DVD, picture quality is good, colors look good, audio level sounds clear and crisp. The 1st season episodes audio sounds a little soft, but I think it's that way on the Sony season 1 set too.

And I like the picture Shout Factory chose for the cover of the season 3 and 4 DVD case. Ann, Julie and Barbara all look good in that picture where they each hold a bag of groceries. ;) :)

As I recall parts one and two aired on the same night back-to-back which might account for a master not having end credits for part one that the Rerun/CBS Daytime/Syndicated version had.

But that should have been caught.

Yes that was my thought too, that parts one and two originally aired the same night back to back, and that's why the end credits are missing on Part 1. Not really a big deal, as it is, Part 1 of the episode runs 24:35 on the DVD. Had the end credits been tacked on, it would run about 25:05.

Another interesting thing I noticed is the season 8 episodes Catcher In The Mud and Auntie Francine both have run times of 24:05. What makes it interesting is that the common run time for the season 8 episodes is 24:50. So perhaps Catcher In The Mud and Auntie Francine were shot for season 7 but not aired till season 8, because 24:05 is the common run time for the season 7 episodes.
