View Full Version : Not By Chance

Ok, so here is my attempt at a Division fanfic. I haven't written one in six months at least, so go easy on me;) Any comments and suggestions are welcomed and appreciated greatly. I'm not good at short installments, so this is long and slow to begin with... Anyway, here we go.

"Not By Chance"

There he was, Theodore Blumenthal. He innocently stood in front of the Anchorside, dressed in his black suit, blue tie, and with briefcase in hand. He was starring at her, a look of hurt in his eyes but a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. She squinted her eyes, wondering what he was thinking as he stared at her. She locked her eyes with his as she began to cross the road in order to reach him. Once in the middle of the road she paused as a car crossed in front of her, causing her to loose eye contact for a brief second, and once the car passed she looked to regain sight of him, but it was too late. He was gone, mysteriously vanishing once again…

Jinny Exstead awoke in a hurry. She bolted upright in bed, finding herself trying to catch her breath and drenched in sweat. She stared out her bedroom window into the dark and dreary night as the sweat dripped from her forehead into her eyes and caused the salt to sting her pupils. She grimaced as her eyes began to water up in pain, but quickly wiped the sweat away from her eyes and forehead with the back of her palm. She inhaled deeply and then exhaled, trying to release all her stress in that one breath. She pushed the hair out of hair eyes and stared out the window in hopes of seeing the moon and its brightness, but to no avail. She rolled her eyes. Her attempt at a peaceful night’s rest was officially over, and she had only been asleep two hours. She threw the covers off her and flung herself over to the side of the bed. “Darn you, Teddy,” she said aloud, but not loud enough for her father to hear in the next room. She grabbed a clip that was sitting on the nightstand beside her bed and pulled her hair back with it. She stood and stretched as she slowly made her way to the shower. She was wide-awake now whether she liked it or not and according to her it was all Theodore’s fault. If she hadn’t of bumped into him at the Division earlier that day she would not have dreamt about him that night. ‘Well, not really dreamt about him,’ Jinny thought to herself. ‘More like had a nightmare concerning him.’
The nightmare had come as no surprise though. She hadn’t been able to keep her mind off him the entire afternoon she had spent trying to work with Magda, and at dinner she stared off into space so long that finally John Jr. had offered to take her down to the station to get a blood test so he could prove she was as ‘high as a blue bird in a thunderstorm.’ Jinny rolled her eyes once again. John Jr. came up with the dumbest analogies,’ she told herself.
Jinny slowly undressed, taking off her sweatpants and navy blue, SFPD shirt and then finally her undergarments. She stepped into the shower and turned it on. The water blasted out of the spicket, causing Jinny to shriek and kick the shower door in pure frustration. “Darn whoever fouled up the hot water,” she yelled at the top of her lungs as she turned the water off and grabbed the towel that was hanging atop the shower door. She quickly wrapped the towel around her and exited the shower as she muttered profanities under her breath.
Five hours later, after Jinny had finished watching two movies, eating three bags of popcorn, drinking two liters of coke, four bottles of chocolate syrup, and doing anything else imaginable to pass the time, she limped down the stairs and into the kitchen. Her father was sitting at the table drinking a beer and looking at the sports section as she entered the room.
“From what I hear the hot water heater needs fixing,” he said as he continued to stare at the paper. Jinny glared at him. “Jinny girl,” he continued, “I’m sorry you didn’t get any sleep last night.” Jinny rolled her eyes as she turned to leave, “and I’m sorry I got a sweat shower instead of a real one,” she muttered under her breath as she grabbed her leather jacket and walked out the door.

Well, there's my attempt at the beginning chapter of this fic. Please let me know what you think so far.

Thanks for the responses, I wasn't really expecting to get any. Here's what I have so far, plus a Jin/Cap moment that I wrote which I'm dying to post that is in the next scene. It's corny but what can ya expect?! Anyway, please let me know what you think-honest opinions!

Captain McCafferty looked up from the file she was going over when she heard a knock on her door. She took her glasses off and motioned for C.D. and Nate to enter her office.
“What’s up, Captain,” C.D. asked as she first entered the office, followed by Nate. The Captain motioned for each of them to take a seat as she closed the file that was in front of her. “Well guys,” the Captain began as she leaned back in her chair and unbuttoned the bottom button of her jacket. “It’s been brought to my attention you two have worked double shifts every night this past week. Of course I already knew this without having to have someone wave the fact in my face since it was my decision to have you do so, but because of your overtime I’ve been told to temporarily take you off the streets.”
“Everyone around here works double shifts. Why all the ruckus this time?” Nate questioned shaking his head in confusion.
“Ten bucks it has to do with Charles,” C.D. said to Nate with a smirk.
He rolled his eyes, “You can’t be right all the time C.D. The man wouldn’t stoop that low.”
“That’s where you’re wrong,” the Captain interrupted. “I’ve yet to determine his motive as to why he wants the success rate of this division to go down, and then again it’s not my job to do so. It is my job to follow orders though, and until I hear otherwise you guys are going to be babysitters.” “Who knows,” she began as she settled even farther back into her chair and smirked, “maybe you’ll become professionals at the task and be able to graduate with honors.” The Captain laughed at her own joke and handed C.D. the file she had been going over earlier. “The woman you will be watching for the next few days is Doris Sisual. She is an eyewitness to a recent murder in the twenty-fifth precinct. She is the prosecutor’s key witness and the city is paying big bucks to put her up in a local hotel room. There is no known threat to her well-being, but they’re taking extra precaution as you can see.”
C.D. nodded her head to the file, “Who’d she see go down that has the DA’s office in such a fuss?”
“One of the biggest dealers in the city, Lunar Sanchez.”
“Yeah, I read about that,” Nate said.
“You two should feel honored then,” Captain smirked as she motioned for them to leave.
“Nice hotel room and free food,” I’m not complaining Nate said as he walked towards the door.
“Good,” C.D. said as she followed him. “Now you have no excuse to pay me the ten bucks you just lost to me.”
C.D. closed the door behind her and walked over to grab her jacket off the back of her chair. Nate laughed at her last comment as he grabbed his jacket as well. “Keep dreaming, C.D.” She just laughed and walked out of the division with Nate by her side. “I’ll see you at the DA’s office in half an hour. Gotta go home and pack a bag. You can do the same and don’t forget to bring your wallet.” Nate silently chuckled as he watched her enter the elevator…

It's not great, but I'm hurrying to write it so...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Captain got off the phone with C.D. who had informed her she and Nate were stationed in a hotel room adjoining that of Doris Sisual’s. The D.A.’s office had given C.D. and Nate the lecture as if they were rookies which had C.D. a bit agitated, but Kate had managed to calm C.D. down and make her realize the ones reading C.D. and Nate’s the book were probably rookie themselves.
She looked at her watch to see it was nine o’clock. She looked out her office door to see Magda sitting at her desk sipping coffee and going over her files. Raina was across from Magda in street clothes. The Captain silently cursed herself. Raina had her five, month evaluation this week and the Captain had forgotten about it entirely. She rose from chair and walked out of her office.
“Ready for the first interview, Raina?” she asked casually as she walked over and stood at the end of Magda and Raina’s joint desks.
“Yeah, Captain, I think I am,” Raina said surely. “I’ve faced worse things in my time. Plus, I talked with Dom about it and everything is going to go well I think.”
The Captain nodded her approval. Raina wasn’t one to back down from people and she had the vocal skills of anyone when it came to talking, so at least there wouldn’t be silence in the room for too long a time.
“Of course my first interview probably won’t be that hard. An interview a day isn’t too bad either. Oh, and you know me, I can talk about just anything with about anyone,” Raina continued in her own little world as she motioned with her hands.
Magda laughed and reached over to pat Raina on the wrist. “Don’t worry, Raina, you’ll do fine. It’s not as nerve wracking as some people make it out to be.”
Raina smiled as she glanced at her watch and rose from her chair. “Well, I better get going. Promptness isn’t pointless.” She turned to the Captain and pointed to the filing cabinet that was to the left of her. “I re-organized the cabinet so that all the cases in there are up to date with the year two thousand one. If you have any questions about anything just page me and I’ll call you as soon as I get the chance.” Raina began to button her blue jean jacket up as the Captain chuckled, “Thanks Raina, I hope this place can run without you.” Raina rolled her eyes as she began to button her blue jean jacket, “I’m sure you’ll do just fine.” She saluted bye to both of them as she turned to leave the division. “Oh, and Raina,” Cap said before she was out the door. “Bite your tongue if you have to.” Raina smiled, “Right Cap. Gotta modulate the mouth.” Raina walked out the door as Jinny walked in.
Jinny limped over to her desk, threw her keys down, and flung her jacket onto her chair.
Magda and Kate looked at each other questioningly and then at Jinny.
“Not a good morning, Jin?” Magda asked.
Jinny pulled her chair out and sat down in it hard. She stared hard at Magda, “Does it appear to be a good morning?”
“Were you limping, Jinny?” the Captain questioned as she motioned to Jinny’s right ankle she had earlier been giving to.
Jinny looked from Magda to Captain and then turned to face her own desk.
Captain smirked, wondering what was getting at Jinny. “Might I also remind you Inspector Exstead that promptness is important around here and you are an hour late.”
With that Jinny slammed both her hands down hard on her desk and then turned to face the two women. She arched an eyebrow as she spoke loudly and distinctively. “I’m late because the darn taxi driver wasn’t from the United States and whatever language he spoke wasn’t mine. I said precinct and heck if I know what he THOUGHT I said but I was half way to New York before I had the sense of mind to figure out we were going the wrong way. The reason I wasn’t paying attention was because my foot is killing me because I kicked the darn shower door last night when the hot water heater decided to break and spray bloody cold water on me at two this morning. Therefore, I couldn’t take a shower so I stink as bad as the taxi driver did. Oh, and by the way, the reason I was taking a shower at such an unearthly hour is because I only got two hours worth of sleep last night. And if THAT doesn’t justify my actions it’s just that time of the month and you’d be wise not to mess with me, much less talk to me anymore than necessary, for the next fourty-eight hours.” With that Jinny got up and limped out of the division towards the locker room. Captain and Magda watched her leave and then turned to look at each other. Both of them started laughing and laughed even harder once they heard the chuckles coming from the other officers that had heard Jinny’s ranting and raving.
“I think we’ll just give her a minute,” the Captain said as she regained her composure but still had a huge grin on her face.

Well, I thought I was going to leave this fic high and dry, but someone-and you know who you are-talked me into continuing it. Once I finish everything I have to do for school tomorrow I'll recontinue the fic because I have a lot of ideas for it. Thanks for all the replies.
