View Full Version : Something that bothers me about "Dinner at Eight" MichaelMartinD 08-31-2017, 06:04 PM ...Andy and Goober don't have anything to drink at dinner! Anyone else notice this? A real oversight from the prop department. vitoscotti 08-31-2017, 08:19 PM Also, if my memory is right each family in Mayberry has the same blue and white dinner plate pattern in this and other episodes. Also, why would Andy trust imbecile Goober's phone message memory and not call to double check. Funny episode though. Samme 09-01-2017, 09:39 AM [QUOTE=vitoscotti Funny episode though.[/QUOTE] That's the bottom line. vitoscotti 09-01-2017, 01:23 PM Classic TV show trivia, goofs, and inconsistencies chatter are fun too. Scrabjan1 09-16-2017, 08:29 AM I thought the episode was lame and by then Andy was phoning it in. Can't stand Helen in that one and who would trust Goober? Howard living with his mother always cracks me up. Mayberry'sBadBoy 09-17-2017, 06:09 PM I thought the episode was lame and by then Andy was phoning it in. Can't stand Helen in that one and who would trust Goober? Howard living with his mother always cracks me up. I remember on the IMDB forums there was talk about how in seasons 7 and 8 there seemed to be an increase in episodes where Andy was allowed to lose his temper and an increase in stupid things happening to make Andy miserable. The theory we came up with was that by that point the writers rightfully reasoned that since Andy was not going to bring his A Game to their scripts, and therefore they were more than happy to write scripts where Andy acted like a spineless wussy jackass (The best description of Color episode Andy IMO) as an act of revenge. The thing that got me about Dinner at Eight (along with a few other season 7 and 8 Goober episodes) is why on earth would Andy still be friends with Goober after the episode ended? Unlike Barney or Gomer's stupidity, Goober's stupidity was extremely dangerous. For those who don't know Oregano based Spaghetti sauce can cause a severe upset stomach if too much is ingested. Given how much he ate Andy most likely spent the rest of the weekend on the toilet thanks to Goober. If I had been Andy I would've ended the friendship right then and there, but he didn't. vitoscotti 09-17-2017, 07:40 PM Andy's questionable to logic reactions to his dimwit friends is the lifeblood of the show. It's all absurd. In the real world Barney and Warren would be fired after day one on the job. When goober forces himself on Andy during the beginning of dinner at 8 in the real world he'd be booted out in a heartbeat. Logic sometimes just isn't funny. Smiley13 09-17-2017, 07:59 PM I thought it was one of the funnier episodes of the later seasons. As usual, Helen was rude though. vitoscotti 09-18-2017, 10:31 AM There are some gems in the color episodes. A lot with Goober. I like when Helen is a bal***Ster. She wears the highest fashion on a small town grade school teachers salary. Helen is great. Scrabjan1 09-19-2017, 08:59 PM Howard's bachelor party where only Andy and Helen show up is so over the top it's brilliant. There's Goober bopping and hopping around the pillows with Helen and Howard wearing her out in his saddle shoes. He had no idea why he bought artwork or why he decorated it that way. Helen looked so uncomfortable. Smiley13 09-19-2017, 09:46 PM Howard's bachelor pad was a hoot. That was a pretty funny episode as well during the later years. Willbo 09-20-2017, 08:35 AM There were some funny color episodes. Aunt Bees trip to Mexico with her friends was a funny one. I like Howard's bachelor pad also. I really did not care for Emmet. vitoscotti 09-21-2017, 08:44 AM I like Howard's mother in the color episodes. She was so over the top possessive of him. Scrabjan1 09-21-2017, 10:11 AM Especially when Howard wanted to join the men's club where there might be gambling. I think she thought he would become a compulsive poker player and tried to keep him out. I believe she was lethal to his life especially calling him when he attempted to have a date and saying she was ill. All of a sudden she gets married. Mabel Albertson was the perfect mother from hell. Scrabjan1 09-21-2017, 10:15 AM I'm sure it's been noted but in the one when Howard has his "bash" that's Teri Garr as a customer at the station who Goober asks to go to a party. Sometimes it's edited out. I saw George Lindsay once in a good scene in an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. He showed acting talent. vitoscotti 09-21-2017, 11:37 AM Mabel Albertson was that girl Marlo Thomas's boyfriend's mother on that girl. She was also Darren Stevens mother on bewitched. I like when andy talked to Howard about going on a date with the county nurse Mabel Albertson slams The Big records book and gives Andy the evil eye. Her brother was Jack Albertson who played Aunt Bee's cousin I believe who turned out to be a con man. Another great color episode When she would get a glimpse of witchcraft on Bewitched it was really histerical how she responded to it. Fun Fact: George Lindsay was Gene Roddenberry's first choice for Mr. Spock on Star Trek: TOS. Helen looked so uncomfortable. Yes, that was a freaky and funny episode. Will Dockery 02-25-2024, 12:21 AM Fun Fact: George Lindsay was Gene Roddenberry's first choice for Mr. Spock on Star Trek: TOS. Good Lord, I'm glad that never happened. ;) Will Dockery 02-25-2024, 12:24 AM Mabel Albertson was that girl Marlo Thomas's boyfriend's mother on that girl.
