Jerry Lewis dead at 91, remembering the legendary comedian

Jerry Lewis, the rubber-faced, squeaky-voiced comedy legend who starred in movies and musicals and also was known for his unflagging work on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, died on Sunday, his publicist confirmed. He was 91 years old.

Lewis' publicist confirmed the news to The Associated Press. The Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist John Katsilometes first reported Lewis' death.

Lewis "passed peacefully at home this morning of natural causes at the age of 91 with his loving family by his side," manager Mark Rozzano said.

Lewis had gone through a series of health problems and scares in recent years. In June 2012 he was hospitalized for two nights in New York after collapsing with what was reported to be a low blood sugar problem.

He was forced to cancel a fund-raising show in Australia due to poor health in June 2011.

Lewis had been touring Australia to raise money for the country's Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, which is separate from the American association, where he served as president.

He announced in 2011 he was retiring as host of the association's Labor Day Telethon, which he began hosting in 1966.




I regularly volunteer for MDA charity events. I was not a big fan of his comedy, but I was a big fan of his endless charity work.

i thought he was funny!! i wasn't big jerry lewis fan but my brother used to watch the dean martian & jerry lewis movies all the time!!

Was Jerry Lewis the spokesman for a store called Service Merchandise? Because every time I visited Service Merchandise with my mom Service Merchandise always used to have Jerry Lewis posters hanging on the store walls above the cash registers in the checkout areas and each poster would feature Jerry Lewis announcing Service Merchandise's sales of the week and the posters had Jerry Lewis standing next to a box with the words "Service Merchandise" on it while holding it in a Monty Hall style pose in a Let's Make A Deal like fashion

My dad, who is gone now, hardly laughed. But when a Jerry Lewis movie came on I could see my dad crack a smile. He loved Jerry's movies. Now my mom didn't think he was funny at all.

I love all conedians from the old school.

Did you know that a lot of the Jerry Lewis Theaters that were popping up all over the country in the early-1970's became Porno Theaters?

I never thought Jerry Lewis was funny either, I always found him to be annoying. R.I.P., he lived a long life 91 years.

I think it was probably promotions for MDA contributions at the cash register. Many large corporations would collect money for MDA year round and appear on the telethon including the Southland Corp which is 7-Eleven.

Growing up, the MDA fundraiser was our Labor Day weekend. At the end Jerry would sing that touching song, You'll Never Walk Alone. Jerry Lewis was a wonderful man with a charitable heart. I'm glad he lived a nice long life.

Jerry Lewis' six sons were purposely excluded from the late comic's will. The legendary comedian, who died in August at 91, explicitly asked that they receive no benefits from his estate. The will states:

"I have intentionally excluded Gary Lewis, Ronald Lewis, Anthony Joseph Lewis, Christopher Joseph Lewis, Scott Anthony Lewis, and Joseph Christopher Lewis and their descendants as beneficiaries of my estate, it being my intention that they shall receive no benefits hereunder".

He left his estate to his widow, and adopted daughter.
