View Full Version : Grover and Hubert
Marvo301 08-16-2017, 07:28 PM I just finished watching season six of Leave it to Beaver on DVD. In the last few episodes of the series we learn some interesting things regarding the names of some of the characters. In "Beaver's Graduation" we learn that Gilbert Bate's middle name is Grover after his Uncle Grover who will pay him 10 dollars when he graduates Grammer School so long as the name Grover appears on the diploma. In "Beaver Sees America" we learn that Whitey Whitney's real first name is Hubert. He calls the cleaver house on the phone and when Mrs. Cleaver answers he says "Hello, this is Hubert Whitney". When June is left speechless he adds "you know, Whitey".
Scrabjan1 08-16-2017, 07:33 PM Yeah that was great learning Whitey's real name. He could have gone by Hugh Whitney. Speaking of Gilbert Grover Bates can you name the other times we hear Grover?
stevea 08-16-2017, 08:44 PM They didn't have a chance to screw up Gilbert's middle name, like they did his last name.
I think we also learn in Family Scrapbook how Theodore got his nickname, Beaver. I'm pretty sure that was never revealed in any other episode.

When Beaver was a baby Wally couldn't pronounce Theodore. It came out Theoder. His parents thought Beaver would sound better than that and so a nickname was born.
Scrabjan1 08-18-2017, 09:00 AM I still don't know how they got Beaver out of that. I think Ward pronounced it Tweeter.
MichaelMartinD 08-18-2017, 09:20 AM That explanation of Beaver's name was lame. "Beaver" is perfectly believable as a rhyming nickname to go with "Cleaver," or as a nickname for a busy, active little boy who has buck teeth. I don't know why they felt the need to invent that explanation.
Torgo 08-18-2017, 11:01 AM They should've said when Beaver was still a toddler they would always catch him gnawing on the furniture.
Scrabjan1 08-18-2017, 01:53 PM That would be a good reason to call him Beaver. I think saying "The Beaver" was really strange. "Where's the Beaver?"
Once Eddie was up in the room and asked him if he gnawed down any trees today. Loved when June called Wally, Wallace like in the Haircomb. Really unusual names Wallace and Theodore instead of Bill and Bob.
Is it true that Beaver was named after Aunt Martha's brother, Theodore?

Yes. Beaver was named after Aunt Martha's brother Theodore. In the episode when Aunt Martha was planning to send Beaver to a Prep School back East she even brought Beaver the school hat that her brother Theodore had worn when he went to that same Prep School years earlier;

In the season 1 episode titled Beaver Gets "Spelled", Miss Canfield calls Whitey "Harold". Closed Captions on the DVD confirms the name.
stevea 09-21-2020, 07:56 PM Yeah that was great learning Whitey's real name. He could have gone by Hugh Whitney. Speaking of Gilbert Grover Bates can you name the other times we hear Grover?
To answer this over-three-year old question, there was also Mount Grover, where Wally took Beaver and his friends camping.
Scrabjan1 09-22-2020, 09:29 AM Right and Coach Grover in Beaver the Athlete. The time when Beaver couldn’t hit the ball or tumble.
stevea 09-22-2020, 10:33 AM Oh, yeah. After Beaver and Ward got tumblin' nailed down, Coach Grover switched to baseball.
CosmicCharlie 09-22-2020, 07:51 PM One other thing ...
his parents sometimes call him Beaver and other times THE Beaver
I would think it would be one or the other ?
MichaelMartinD 09-23-2020, 08:48 AM Nicknames back then sometimes came with "the" in front. The Duke, The Horse, The Tiger. But it was weird how they alternated between having the definite article and not having it.
If I'm not mistaken, June and Wally said "the Beaver" but Ward said "Beaver."
Torgo 12-22-2020, 11:46 PM I like how in the New Leave It To Beaver, Wally's kids call Beaver 'Uncle Beaver'
Beaver and Lumpy are business partners, I wonder if at the office they are referred to by clients as Clarence and Theodore, or Lumpy and Beaver?
