Joe Bologna, an actor, playwright and screenwriter who appeared in such films as My Favorite Year, Blame It on Rio and Woman in Red, has died. He was 82.

Bologna died Sunday at at City of Hope hospital in Duarte, Calif. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer three years ago, said his wife of 52 years, actress Renee Taylor.

He received an Oscar nomination for adapted screenplay, shared with his wife and David Zelag Goodman, for his work on Lovers and Other Strangers (1970). They had first written it for Broadway in a production directed by Charles Grodin.

The couple also penned and starred in the film Made for Each Other (1971), which Newsweek called "the best love story & comedy of the year," and co-wrote and co-directed Love Is All There Is (1996), which marked one of the first feature appearances for actress Angelina Jolie.

Bologna and Taylor won an Emmy for writing the 1973 Marlo Thomas TV special, Acts of Love and Other Comedies. They penned 22 plays, including It Had to Be You, Bermuda Avenue Triangle and If You Ever Leave Me I'm Going With You.

Perhaps Bologna's most memorable onscreen appearance was as King Kaiser, clearly modeled after comedy legend Sid Caesar, in My Favorite Year (1982). He was able to attend a 35th anniversary celebration of the film on July 27.

He was also best known for his role in the short-lived NBC Musical Comedy-Drama Rags to Riches as Nick Foley

The show took place in the 1960's and debut on NBC 30 years ago as the Movie of the Week and because the Made for TV Movie was so successful, NBC president the late Brandon Tartikoff decided to make it a series

The series was so underrated and it didn't last long because of too many time changes by NBC and was cancelled after only 2 seasons and the show also launched the careers of Tisha Campbell aka Mrs. Duane Martin who went on the great success with Martin, My Wife & Kids and the House Party Films while Heidi Ziegler went on to star in the Growing Pains Spin-off Just the Ten of Us with Comedian Bill Kirchenbauer and Deborah Harmon

Rags to Riches was Created by Bernie Kukoff who also Created such shows as Diff'rent Strokes & Thea as well as served as Executive Producer of Season 7 of The Cosby Show

God Bless You Mr. Bologna, R.I.P. and Thank You for all the years that you've entertained us

I thought he was brilliant as King Kaiser in "My Favorite Year". He really captured the stress and chaos of the live TV era. :rip: Joseph Bologna
