Today is Evangeline Lilly’s 39th birthday. Lilly grew up in British Columbia, and worked as a waitress and flight attendant to pay for her tuition at the University of British Columbia. Early in the 2000s, she began making appearances as a non-speaking extra in TV series such as Smallville and Tru Calling which were filmed in Vancouver. But Lilly had virtually no acting experience when, in 2004, she was cast as Kate Ford, one of the central characters on Lost.
Lilly appeared in 108 episodes of Lost as Kate, more than any other cast member other than Matthew Fox as Jack Shephard. During the show’s run, Lilly began getting significant feature film roles. Her first was as the wife of Jeremy Renner’s character in The Hurt Locker (the film’s cast also included Anthony Mackie). After Lost’s run ended, Lilly costarred in the sci-fi sports drama Real Steel, and then landed the first of her two best-known film roles, as the elf Tauriel in the final two films of the Hobbit trilogy. In 2015, she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Hope Van Dyne in Ant-Man.

Lilly starred in the horror comedy Little Evil, which came out last year, and then returned to the role of Hope van Dyne for Ant-Man and the Wasp, donning the Wasp costume for the first time. She is generally expected to appear in the fourth Avengers film. Lilly has also written a children’s book, The Squickerwonkers, the first in a projected series.
