If you haven’t heard or visited Tumblr ever, nostalgia is all the rave these days, so it’s no surprise that part of MTV’s plan (http://screenrant.com/mtv-revival-trl-october/) to revitalize their brand includes a ton of reaching back to their heydays (https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/mtv-will-bring-back-total-request-live-this-october.1213067/). In an interview with The New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/30/business/media/mtv-total-request-live-revival.html), MTV’s president Chris McCarthy quietly announced one of MTV’s flagship shows Total Request Live would be relaunching (https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/6qk6qh/trl_returns_to_mtv_this_october/) this October (https://atrl.net/forums/topic/58974-trl-coming-back-october/) as part of the network’s planned revamp.

In the interview, McCarthy explains that he views a Times Square studio a “centerpiece” of a reinvention and comeback of the MTV brand. The changes are part of “strategic pivot” by MTV’s parent company Viacom, as they look to focus on six core cable networks. McCarthy said other changes were in store as well, like making the award categories at the MTV Movie Awards gender neutral and renaming the Moonman award the Moon Person (http://www.breitbart.com/big-hollywood/2017/07/31/mtv-movie-awards-statue-changed-moonman-moon-person/) because, according to McCarthy “Why should it be a man? It could be a man, it could be a woman, it could be transgender, it could be nonconformist.”

TRL is, of course, one of the most renown shows in the network’s history, previously hosted by the likes of Carson Daly, Sway, Lala, Dave Holmes and many more. The original TRL (https://www.buzzfeed.com/briangalindo/in-everything-old-is-new-again-news-mtv-is-bringi) allowed viewers to vote on a top 10 daily, hosted the biggest stars of the day from all genres of music, and grew to be an essential stop for any artist looking to be seen and heard.

The new TRL is set to be a daily, hour-long show that could grow to be two or three hours at some point. There will be five hosts, including social media star DC Young Fly, a rapper and comedian, along with Erik Zachary, a Chicago radio host.

The very thought of bringing TRL back (http://www.thedailybeast.com/bringing-back-trl-wont-make-mtv-great-again) in today's landscape (https://www.buzzfeed.com/scaachikoul/who-wants-their-mtv-in-2017?utm_term=.chQ444qnnp#.rdmBBB4OOm) is in itself, an even tougher act (http://www.avclub.com/article/lets-imagine-what-could-possibly-make-relaunched-t-259035) to follow:

The reason why TRL was so successful back then was because there was no social media. You literally had to go to the show to promote your music. Now I just don't see the point when you have YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

The show was about playing the music videos and see which videos would go # 1 and retire from the countdown. Without that, there is no point.

I'm assuming the revival is all about social media.

MTV: We're expanding not canceling TRL (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/trl-isnt-canceled-mtv-expanding-franchise-add-late-night-morning-editions-1094604)

MTV president Chris McCarthy responded to TMZ's report (https://i.imgur.com/3dugja9.jpg) this afternoon that the reboot of Total Request Live has been canceled and won't return from the hiatus it went on in February by announcing that, in fact, TRL is sticking around and will be expanding to morning and late-night editions. "It's thriving," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "We're expanding the franchise and will have three TRLs by summer," He added: "TRL has delivered incredible growth on linear and we've experienced two to three times the growth in our video streams and TRL is big piece of it — and that's why we're expanding it; we want more." The late-night edition will launch in the summer, airing four nights a week and serve as somewhat of an "after-show" to MTV's primetime programming. Total Request A.M. will air without commercials as a curated Spotify playlist with a traditional video countdown and performances.

'90s TV shows that would never get made today
(https://www.looper.com/236504/90s-tv-shows-that-would-never-get-made-today/)

TRL couldn't compete with new technology

With its nonstop music video programming, early MTV was essentially radio on television. And as with radio, if MTV viewers wanted to catch a particular song, they'd potentially have to wait around for hours until it finally aired. However, radio offered a workaround to the wait — listeners could always call in and make a hopeful request. MTV similarly had a few viewer request shows over the years, such as Total Request, and in 1998, the network fused that program with the talk show MTV Live to form Total Request Live,

So how did Total Request Live work? Well, it was a daily program in which host Carson Daly would count down the most requested music videos of the day from a studio in Times Square. Hundreds of tweens and teens showed up each day to hang out outside the set, hoping their cheering and screaming would wind up on TV, while millions of others rushed home after school to vote their favorite Britney Spears or Backstreet Boys video to the top of the TRL daily chart.

Total Request Live is now but a relic of a bygone era of both MTV and music consumption. It was canceled in 2008, three years after the launch of YouTube. That free online video streaming service enabled anyone with an internet connection to watch whatever video they wanted at any time — especially pop videos. Why would anyone watch a show to wait for a video when they could cue it up instantly on YouTube?
