On the heels of the Season 2 premiere of Ava DuVernay’s breakout OWN drama "Queen Sugar" hitting series highs last month, the cable network has renewed the series for a third season.

Additionally, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker has signed a first-look TV deal with Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Films for television and digital media. The news is being announced today during the Discovery Networks portion of the TCA summer press tour in Beverly Hills.

Ahead of "Queen Sugar‘s" Season 3 finale, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network has ordered a fourth season of Ava DuVernay’s critically acclaimed drama, with writer-co-executive producer Anthony Sparks set as new showrunner/executive producer.

Sparks replaces current showrunner Kat Candler in the new season. The move continues DuVernay’s aim to provide showrunner opportunities to those who have never before held the position, OWN says.



“Under Ava’s creative vision and leadership, Queen Sugar continues to earn a well-deserved reputation for depicting nuanced characters, rich storylines and establishing an inclusive team that inspires and ignites much needed conversations about our society today,” said Erik Logan, president, OWN.

“We are very proud of this show, the incredible cast, producers and crew, and can’t wait for more of the Bordelon family in season four.”

"Queen Sugar" is coming back next year for a fifth season on OWN. Anthony Sparks will be continuing as showrunner, having taken over from Kat Candler last year.

“I’m thrilled to further explore the beauty, pain and triumph of this African-American family, with hopes that their story will continue to resonate with audiences who see themselves in the Bordelons,” creator Ava DuVernay said today.

The Bordelons are back, and coming back again. A month before the fifth season of "Queen Sugar" is set to debut, OWN has renewed the Ava DuVernay-created drama for Season 6.

"Queen Sugar" is coming to an end with its seventh season in 2022.

“It’s a radical act that it lasted this long, and it’s a testament to every single pair of hands that touched it and I am so proud of that,” series creator Ava DuVernay told Deadline today of the acclaimed OWN drama executive produced by Oprah Winfrey.

With tonight’s Season 6 finale, the 2016 debuting rural Louisiana-set series will return next year for what is expected to be a 13-episode final run.
