Former "Smallville" star Tom Welling has joined the Season 3 cast of Fox’s drama series "Lucifer", and the network has unveiled a new trailer.

Welling will play Marcus Pierce, an accomplished police lieutenant who is everything Lucifer (Tom Ellis) is not: strategic, reserved and well-respected. But perhaps even more annoying are all the things they have in common. Both men are charming, charismatic and handsome as hell.

So when Pierce starts developing a connection with Decker (Lauren German), Lucifer’s devilish traits are inflamed.

Season 3 premieres on Monday, October 2nd at 8pm on Fox.

First Look at Tom Welling on "Lucifer"
by Natalie Abrams
August 27, 2017

Six years after the "Smallville" finale, Tom Welling finally makes his return to primetime this fall on Fox’s "Lucifer" — and EW has the exclusive first look.

Welling will play Marcus Pierce, an accomplished police lieutenant who strikes up a potential romance with Decker (Lauren German), much to Lucifer’s (Tom Ellis) chagrin. However, the strategic and charismatic cop starts off as a foil to them both.

“When Decker first meets Marcus Pierce, he is very much someone that rubs her the wrong way, because he’s very much a no-nonsense, calling-it-like-it-is guy, and he’s not much for social mores, if you will,” says co-showrunner Joe Henderson.

“But what’s interesting is he also represents a lot of truth and justice and very much a lot of the things that draw Chloe to the side of law. So Pierce is very much the exact opposite of Lucifer, but also very similar, and so that duality is a big reason for them to start coming together.”

The role marks a departure for Welling after playing the Man of Steel for 10 seasons.

“I definitely didn’t want to play Clark Kent again,” Welling says. “The great thing about Clark is he didn’t know who he was and he didn’t know what he was supposed to do with what he had and his abilities. This character very much knows what he’s capable of and knows what he wants to do and knows how to do it, so as much fun as that is to play, it wasn’t necessarily because of Clark that I chose this character.

It was so many more factors than just, ‘I don’t want play Clark again,’ but I’d be lying if I was saying that I do not enjoy playing something very different for sure.”
