Disney Hollywood Studios is Closing “The Great Movie Ride”

July 17, 2017

Walt Disney World’s MGM Studios attraction “The Great Movie Ride” took guests into the world of MGM classic cinema. The attraction was the last one remaining from the original theme park since MGM's deal expired with Disney in January 2008.

The dark ride's entrance was a replica of the famous Grauman’s Chinese Theater and the ride host would interact with the guests as they visited scenes from The Wizard of Oz, Singin' in the Rain, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Alien, The Public Enemy, Casablanca ... and other MGM Studio classics.

/Film reports out of D23 that the attraction will be closing on August 13, 2017, to make way for “Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway”, which will take riders into a Mickey Mouse cartoon!

“Mickey and Minnie are getting a state of the art attraction with a theme song,” Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek said. “We will join Mickey and his friends in their world.”

The Runaway Railway will feature an original story like the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, It’s a Small World, and The Haunted Mansion. The ride will take you through the screen into a Mickey Mouse short where “anything can happen.”

The animated short film begins with Mickey and Minnie getting ready for a picnic while Goofy tries his hand at being an engineer. Riders then literally step into the movie screen to board Goofy’s train. Mickey and Minnie keep you out of trouble as riders are taken through twists and turns, all set to “dazzling visual effects.”

In addition, the ride will be chock full of Hidden Mickey’s that the designers hid in “surprising places.”

Rather than being a 3D ride, Chapek calls it a “2 and a half D” ride.

“This is a game changing attraction,” the team promised. “A Mouseterpiece.”

I rode The Great Movie Ride when I went on my first Walt Disney World trip in 1997 and I thought the ride was really neat and full of adventure and having your own special guide to tell you about each movie that was featured in The Great Movie Ride made it extra awesome. The first time we rode The Great Movie Ride my mom and I were scared at first because we thought our guide had disappeared but then they brought our guide back and at the end of the ride I got an Oz Award because I was so brave and I still have it hung on a wall. Disney has always talked about updating The Great Movie Ride for a long time and I think that this new Mickey and Minnie Mouse ride will be impressive when it debuts and I think this will mean that Disney Hollywood Studios will add more shows and rides in the future to attract a huge audience of visitors to the park
