"Downton Abbey" Movie To Start Production in 2018
by Diana Lodderhose
June 22, 2017

The wheels are moving on the "Downton Abbey" movie as NBCUniversal International Studios confirmed on Wednesday that production for a big screen adaptation of the hit series is set to begin next year.

NBCU Int’l Studios President Michael Edelstein told the Associated Press that the company hopes to assemble 20 cast members from the Carnival Films/Masterpiece series, which ran on ITV in the UK and PBS in the U.S., for a production start date in 2018.

“We are working on getting the script right and then we’ve got to figure out how to get the cast together,” said Edelstein. “Because, as you know, people go on and do other things. But we’re hopeful to make a movie sometime next year.”

"Downton Abbey" Movie Gets Green Light, Production Begins This Summer
by Michael Ausiello
July 13, 2018

That noise you hear is the Dowager Countess scowling, “It’s about bloody time.” The long-rumored feature-film revival of "Downton Abbey" has received a formal green light, with production slated to begin later this summer.

The original cast is set to return for the movie, which was written by series creator Julian Fellowes. He will executive-produce alongside fellow returnees Gareth Neame, Liz Trubridge and Nigel Marchant. Brian Percival, who helmed the series’ pilot, is on board to direct.

“When the television series drew to a close it was our dream to bring the millions of global fans a movie and now, after getting many stars aligned, we are shortly to go into production,” Neame said in a statement.

“Julian’s script charms, thrills and entertains and in Brian Percival’s hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as Downton comes to the big screen.”

Adds Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski, “Since the series ended, fans of Downton have long been waiting for the Crawley family’s next chapter. We’re thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of Downton to the big screen.”

Buzz about a possible two-hour continuation of the beloved British soap has been kicking around since the series ended back in 2016.

A release date has not yet been announced.
