Phylicia Rashad, who is 69 today, was a two-time Emmy nominee as Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show, and won a Tony for Best Actress in a Play for a 2004 revival of A Raisin in the Sun.

Phylicia Rashad, who is pictured above at this year’s Tony Awards, is turning 74 today. She won Best Featured Actress in a Play, the second Tony of her career, for Dominique Morisseau’s Skeleton Crew.

In addition to a distinguished stage career, Rashad has had a long and successful career on television. Anyone who is familiar with 1980s television is almost certain to remember her for starring on The Cosby Show as Clair Huxtable, a role which brought her two Emmy nominations.

Rashad was born in Texas, and studied at Howard University. She began working on stage in the seventies, but prior to The Cosby Show, her best-known role was probably a stint on One Life to Live. In the 1990s, she starred as Bill Cosby’s wife a second time, on Cosby. She was an Emmy nominee for starring on the ABC TV movie adaptation of A Raisin in the Sun in 2008. More recently, she has picked up three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Guest Actress, as Carol Clarke on This Is Us.

Early in her career, Rashad did little feature film work. The 1995 drama Once Upon a Time…When We Were Colored was an exception. Since 2010, she has been doing more film work. She appeared in Creed and its two sequels as Mary Anne, the widow of Apollo Creed.

Prior to the ABC movie of A Raisin in the Sun, Rashad won a Tony for Best Lead Actress in a Play, for starring in the 2004 Broadway revival. She was a Tony nominee again a year later, for starring in August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean.
