i think will's influence was more positive than negative.

he taught ashley how to express herself. she confided in him more than any other family member. who could forget when he helped her deal with paula the bully? there were so many cute moments of the two of them just bonding. one in particular being will's mission to give ashley a 'real' christmas in the 'deck the halls' episode. their friendship was established in the very first episode. ashley told him he was like the big brother she never had.

will literally brought colour and energy to not only ashley's life, but the entire banks household.

Will brought a side to life that Ashley needed to experience. If he hadn't been sent to live with the Banks, Ashley would have grown up only knowing the sophisticated and fancy stuff & basically would have been a mini-Hilary (Will even says in one episode that Hilary and Carlton were already too set into the family's ways for him to "save" them).
