View Full Version : Any techies on here?
I sure could use some help with this constant tech problem that I am currently experiencing at the moment.
When I was out yesterday and came back home, my computer's taskbar and start menu were all white. I have no idea why it happened. The whole situation happened very recently before and I have tried the usual shutting down and rebooting, but nothing seems to be helping me out at all. Even tried force rebooting with no success. Can't even reboot my computer now due to all of the transparency and aero effects. Troubleshooting the problem did not help also. Does anyone know what is going on with my computer and why this is happening?
robyrob 06-10-2017, 08:31 AM press and hold the power button until it shuts off
as it starts up, tap the F8 function key to bot into Safe Mode
try to do a system restore to before the problem started

Foggy 06-10-2017, 08:42 AM Here is another site with some suggestions:

As robyrob has said a "system restore" before your problem should solve it.
Let us know.
This is interesting. As I was troubleshooting, there was something that happened to be not working properly. It was all due to Desktop Window Manager being disabled which is why there were transparency and aero effects. In the end, I had to enable it in order for the taskbar and start menu to not be white anymore.

Now the issue is happening to me again.
mrbaconclay 06-14-2017, 10:48 PM Hey, I have a question about the board and thought this might be a good thread to ask in.
I was wondering how do you unsubscribe to a thread so so you don't get email notifications anymore. I would like to stop getting the emails, thanks to anyone who could help me with this. :)

go to the User Control Panel http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/usercp.php
click on "List Subscriptions" http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/subscription.php?do=viewsubscription
click on the boxes to the right of any threads you want to unsubscribe, it should have a check when it is selected
click on the box below that says "move to folder" to the right of "Selected Threads" and click on the option for "Delete Subscription", then click the "Go" button beside it.

to disable future subscriptions, change the setting in the Control Panel under "Edit Options" http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/profile.php?do=editoptions
go down to the Default Thread Subscription Mode section and change the setting

MISST3 06-15-2017, 12:37 PM I've been told my hard drive is dying. Since I'm going to have to get a new computer, does anyone have any suggestions? I'd like to have another laptop. Any suggestions on brands?
Another interesting fact I learned yesterday. The theme that I used (An HP installed one) doesn't support Aero, which is why I had those desktop effects in the first place to begin with.
Now I am going to have to use Aero themes from now on.

How do you know that your hard drive is dying?
I'm currently working on a 1998 Dell Windows XP (with updates to windows 7.)
Yes-- it is a very old system, and yes I did say 1998!
I have lost the ability to post pictures, but have maintained everything else.
Here is a site to check into:

Tip number 5 might have some help.
Now, if you really think you should start looking for a new computer/laptop
here is a site that has the top 10 brands for 2017 with reviews

Very important - make sure you have backed up your computer in case of a crash.
Good luck and happy research.
Babalu 06-15-2017, 06:48 PM I also used XP until relatively recently. I though my hard drive was going because nothing was working properly. I couldn't even access or view some folders in the Explorer. I brought it into a new place because my old store had gone out of business. It turned out that because XP is no longer supported being on the internet with XP is taxing on your system and the system just malfunctions. I upgraded to Windows 7 and for the most part it works fine. I have a problem with streaming video now which I didn't before. Haven't figured that one out yet.

Thanks so much, it all worked for me. :)
MISST3 06-15-2017, 11:38 PM My laptop clicks and whirrs, esp. booting up. Occas. the screen or parts of the screen, go black. The touch bar stopped working properly a few months
ago, so I had to start using a wireless mouse. which I still don't like! All this
to put off the inevitable, of getting a new laptop. To me, I don't know about other people, but, to me, it's a huge hassle - to switch from one computer to
another. I don't like doing it! But I guess I'm going to have to. Anyway,
thanks so much, Babalu for your top laptop list. I had Windows 7, too, now
I'll probably have to upgrade to who knows what. I'm not looking forward to
this. Thanks for the backup tip, too! So, if you suddenly don't see me for a
while, you'll know why! LOL
I used to use XP many years ago as one of my very first computers. Unfortunately, there was a virus due to one of the screensavers, so we had to get rid of the computer not long after the virus happened.
The old keyboard is still somewhere at my house though.
Does anyone know anything about this?

FYI, no matter how bad a virus is, it only affects the software, not the physical machine. You never have to throw out a computer because of a virus.

There was another screensaver that had a virus as well.

I guess you didn't understand. The computer software could have a thousand viruses. None of that affects the physical parts of the computer like the hard drive or disk drive. Once you wipe the software clean you have a brand new computer. If you have a cold or the flu your house doesn't get sick, only the people in it.

You're right, I didn't.
