Of the two feature-length "Saved By The Bell" TV-movies that aired on NBC's prime-time schedule during "SBTB's" run on Saturday mornings--1992's "SBTB: Hawaiian Style" and 1994's "SBTB: Wedding In Las Vegas"--my favorite of the two was definitely "Wedding In Las Vegas."
"Wedding In Las Vegas" not only serves as a series finale to the short-lived "SBTB: The College Years," but also to the original "SBTB" series. When "The College Years" was cancelled in February 1994 (due to mediocre ratings--it was scheduled opposite ABC's "Full House," CBS's "Rescue 911," and Fox's "Roc"), NBC decided to commission a two-hour movie to tie up the loose ends that "The College Years" left untied.
"Wedding In Las Vegas" was the better-written of the two "SBTB" TV movies; "Hawaiian Style" always seemed like an extended episode of the original "SBTB" series, only shot on location without a studio audience or--God forbid--a sweetened laugh track. Aside from a few comedic moments from Screech, "Wedding In Las Vegas" had a much better story. My only quibble about "Wedding In Las Vegas" was the subplot about Slater's relationship with Carla (Liz Vassey) and the Constantine Diamond, which was completely unneccessary; ditto for the obligatory special guest appearance from Gilbert Gottfried (playing Bert Banner).
My favorite moment in "Wedding In Las Vegas" was when Jessie Spano shows up late to Zack and Kelly's wedding (Elizabeth Berkley was actually filming the infamous soft-core camp classic "Showgirls" at the time). And it was interesting to see Mike Rogers and Alex Tabor (Bob Golic and Kiersten Warren, respectively), both from "The College Years," make cameo appearances, along with Bayside's principal Richard Belding (Dennis Haskins); sadly, Leslie Burke (Anne Tremko) was a no-show...every time I watch "Wedding In Las Vegas," I always find it peculiar that Leslie wasn't present at Zack and Kelly's wedding. You'd think that Leslie would've been one of the guests, but alas, it was not to be.
What is your favorite of the two feature-length "SBTB" TV-movies? Drop me a line...I'd love to hear from you.
Enjoy your evening, everyone!
