Nicole Kidman Says There Are No Concrete Plans for a "Big Little Lies" Season 2
by Estelle Tang
June 6, 2017

It's only been a couple of months since "Big Little Lies" ended, but the popular HBO series turned fans into detectives, searching for hints about whether there'd be another season.

Reese Witherspoon, who starred and executive produced the show, hinted that she'd be up for it. Liane Moriarty, who wrote the novel that the show is based on, also mentioned she wouldn't be against a continuation of the story.

Plus, the show itself ends with a question mark, indicating that there could be much more to come from Monterey.

And, while it's not confirmation by any means, Nicole Kidman, also a star and executive producer, told ELLE.com just this week that she had been discussing the idea.

"Reese and I and Laura Dern were together the other night and we were like, okay. So we're working on it.... We would love to bring it to you if it's worthy."

In an interview with Ewan MacGregor for Variety's "Actors on Actors" series, presented by Shutterstock, Kidman also said that perhaps all of these discussions will remain just discussions.

"It was a book, so it was pretty finite," Kidman told her Moulin Rouge co-star. "I mean, we got the taste for it, so we're like, 'Oh, what a pity.' You never know, you always hope, but there's no story—there's absolutely no prospects right now."

Of course, this doesn't mean that it won't happen but it probably won't be happening any time soon.

"Big Little Lies" Followup is a Go at HBO with Nicole Kidman & Reese Witherspoon Back; Andrea Arnold Tapped to Direct
by Nellie Andreeva
December 8, 2017

The long rumored second installment of HBO’s Emmy-winning miniseries "Big Little Lies" has been officially greenlighted with a seven-episode order, matching the length of the first season.

As expected, back for the followup are stars/executive producers Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon as well as writer David E. Kelley who again is penning all seven scripts partially based on a story by Liane Moriarty, author of the Big Little Lies book that the original mini was based on.

Most of the original cast, which included Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgård and Laura Dern, are expected to return, and negotiations are underway.

American Honey helmer Andrea Arnold has been tapped to direct all seven episodes, stepping in for Emmy-winning Season 1 director Jean-Marc Vallée, who will remain an executive producer.

Per HBO, the subversive, darkly comedic drama "Big Little Lies" will explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode…the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom.

“I’m excited to announce the return of Big Little Lies,” said Casey Bloys, president, HBO programming. “David Kelley wrote beautiful scripts and Reese and Nicole were, once again, a force to be reckoned with, reuniting the cast and recruiting the talented Andrea Arnold to direct. We look forward to working with this amazing group of artists.”

“I’m thrilled to be bringing back this talented team of artists,” said Reese Witherspoon. “It gives us the opportunity to delve deeper into the lives of these intriguing and intricate Monterey families and bring more of their stories back to the audience who embraced and championed them.”

Added Kidman, “This is inspired by the overwhelming response by audiences around the world, conceived once again by Liane Moriarty, realized by David Kelley and now in the hands of visionary filmmaker Andrea Arnold. What a journey this has been.”

No production start date has been announced but a spring 2018 filming kickoff had been eyed, before Witherspoon segues to her newly announced morning show drama series for Apple.

HBO's Casey Bloys on "Big Little Lies" Return
by Lesley Goldberg
Jan. 11, 2018

Are you expecting "Big Little Lies" season two to air in 2018?

No. They start shooting in the spring. It's not going to air in 2018.

Given the Emmys and Globes success of the show, have there been any conversations about a third season or the show's long-term future?

Everybody involved is so busy that it's hard to imagine aligning everybody's schedule again. The fact that we were able to get season two together is a small miracle.

Could we do it again? Who knows?! It's a great group. They love working together and they're really fun to work with. But everybody is really busy. So let's see.

How important is it to bring in new faces for season two?

In general, I don't think anybody involved is thinking we're going to do the same thing. In any second season of a show, people want to see growth in the characters and storylines.

I don't think anyone involved is trying to do the same thing. We're trying to progress everybody's lives in the storytelling.

Word is you're bringing in actresses to play the mother to Alexander Skarsgård and Zoe Kravitz's characters.

Maybe!
