Sorry but he was terrible he didnt fit in at all.

The question is not was Warren a good addition to the series, obviously he wasn't, the question is who was responsible for the failure in the first place. In an interview done with Larry King, Andy took full responsibility, but I think he whitewashed the whole issue. Andy's explanation laid the failure entirely on the fact that the character of Barney (Don) was irreplaceable, the production team in Andy's opinion should never have attempted to replace the Barney character with another deputy. That explanation doesn't cut it in my opinion, losing the jailhouse based episodes just made a bad situation (losing the Barney character) worse. The scripts Jack Burns was handed doomed his character from the get-go, for the most part they were recycled ideas from the Don Knotts era. They didn't even properly introduce the character or give the viewer a chance to develop a rooting interest in the character.

I'll give an example of this, Warren is introduced in the episode "The Bazaar" in this episode Warren arrests the entire Ladies Auxiliary for a minor offense, this recycled concept was first done in the season 1 episode "Andy Saves Barney's Morale", in this episode Barney in charge for the day proceeds to arrest half the town. Andy was sympathetic to Barney's dilemma and helps him save face, in the Warren episode Andy is enraged, at one point referring to him to his face as his stupid deputy. Andy is the gatekeeper to the Mayberry universe, if Andy doesn't like or respect a character, the character can't possibly get over with the audience. I think Jack Burns had the talent to make the Warren character work, I also think a lot of interesting things could have been developed around that character (fish out water plots) but poor planning, laziness and unoriginal scripts doomed him. In my opinion it was an opportunity lost.

The most interesting thing about Warren was that he was Floyd's nephew, and that apparently Floyd had family I Boston, where Warren Ferguson came from.

That's an interesting point. An introductory episode for Warren almost writes itself. Floyd recommends Warren to Andy, Andy hires him and the begins to have doubts after dealing with him, he decides to fire him, but he knows he has to tell Floyd. During that conversation he learns (and the viewer as well) something about Warren that helps to get the viewer on Warren's side. It's too bad Jack Burns never discussed what happened, it's a real mystery.
