It has been established that Ross skipped a grade. Then in the Thanksgiving flashbacks, it is revealed that Ross graduated one year before Monica and Rachel. He has always called her his little sister. I always thought he was a few years older than everyone because he had a doctorate. Then it was established he and Chandler were roommates (odd since he was kind of an outsider to Joey and Chandler in the first season). What's the deal? Those flashback episodes always confuse me.

In the first place, I think that the implication is that Ross is a couple of years older than Monica. Furthermore, I would say that most shows that go on for multiple years have contradicting episodes. I would say that the "Flintstones" is the worst offender in this department. The "Golden Girls" is a close second.
