"Wallace and Gromit" Voice Actor Peter Sallis Dies at 96

June 5, 2017

Peter Sallis, the voice of Wallace in "Wallace and Gromit", has died. The actor died in his sleep on Friday, reports The Guardian. He was 96.

“It is with sadness that we announce that our client Peter Sallis died peacefully, with his family by his side, at Denville Hall on Friday 2 June,” Sallis agent’s said in a statement.

Sallis shot to stardom in the U.K. as Norman Clegg in the BBC1 comedy "Last of the Summer Wine". The show would go on to become Britain’s longest-running sitcom, airing from 1973-2010.

Sallis was the only actor to appear in all 295 episodes and he had the last word in the final episode.

The actor later gained worldwide recognition as the cheese-loving inventor Wallace in the Nick Park animated films.

Park released a lengthy statement honoring Sallis’ passing, which began, “I’m so sad, but feel so grateful and privileged to have known and worked with Peter over so many years. He was always my first and only choice for Wallace.”

Very sad but at least he lived a long full life. He was a great actor and he will be missed.

I just learned about this today and had to provide my input!

Back when I was a teenager, as some of you veterans may recall, I was obsessed with "Last of the Summer Wine", and was so ecstatic when I received a response from Peter Sallis (around 2001?)! I adored that show, and had the perfect level of humor that I enjoyed!

I didn't start watching the show on a regular basis until 2001, shortly after Bill Owen's passing. His son, Tom Owen, was just as funny, though, based on the Compo episodes I've seen!

I remember my mom special ordering from my local library the first episodes of LOTSW on VHS from 1973 back when I was still in high school! Good times, good times.

I do not know where that postcard went, but I do have a scan of it!

Rest in peace, old friend! You will be missed! Below is the postcard.

Thanks, all, for listening!
