Hello,

I had started a list of what UM segments were missing from Amazon for Season 1 and 2 and wanted to start this master list and I plan to update it as more seasons are released on Amazon Prime.

Also, I noted instances of segment shifting, where a segment from one season has been included in another season on Amazon Prime. Hopefully, we will still see some of these missing segments in future seasons they release.

People have asked this question numerous times. The official answers from CM are that segments are left out for legal reasons or because they can't place them because there is nowhere to them to "fit" within existing episodes.

This was asked in the Reddit AMA with John Cosgrove & Terry Meurer:

We have a legal staff that keeps track of the cases to make sure that we do not infringe on anyone's rights. Sometimes a statute of limitations on a case has passed. We always try to be as respectful as we can be to the people who were featured in the segments.

They received a follow-up question "How could you be infringing on their rights when the episode has already been broadcasted? And what is the statute of limitations concerning?"

Answer:

Sometimes because the statute of limitations is up the law enforcement agency handling the case will ask us to stop airing it.

Thanks for the info, y'all. I wondered if it was something like that. It's still irritating, though, considering they leave out these great segments, but it seems like they kept all the Lost Loves in. Makes for more boring episodes. I have to fast forward though most of them.

Thanks so much for this incredible list! A lot of work, I know a lot of us appreciate it!

So many of the cases I'm seeing, have been re-used in the Farina episodes, and while I'm thrilled to see the originals again, it's nice to stumble across ones that weren't remade and I either haven't seen in many years or don't even remember. But it seems a lot of these are on the list 😕

I wonder why the 90-minute 11/25/92 show was not included in season 5.
Most of the cases on that episode were Child Abduction cases where the guilty party was a family member and all of those cases were solved soon after that episode aired. I do not think Filmrise has released any of those types of cases to streaming video due to the families request.

The only footage from that 90 minute special that made it to streaming was the phone reunion of Becky Terry and her friend Judy. This was in a separate Update segment from the original case. It's on Episode 23 in Season 5.

In my list, I am referring to updates on previously aired segments.

(10/27/1993): Updates: The Unexplained: Jose Gonzalez (Originally aired 9/29/1993)
(4/20/1994): Updates: Wanted: David Viera (originally aired the week before on 4/13/1994), Updates: Lost Loves: Kimberly Karen (originally aired 2/9/1994)

The question I have for you then is in the Amazon Season 6.2 episode do they show the update that aired in the 10/27/1993 episode for Jose Gonzalez?
Also, for the Amazon Season 6.15 episode do they show the update that aired in the 4/20/1994 episode for Kimberly Karen
I can guarantee they did not air the 4/20 David Viera update. I have the original episode and the update aired over the opening credits.

Thanks so much for this thread!!! - so frustrating. I thought I was going crazy - it just doesn't seem fair to lose classics like Bonnie Wilder. But I guess if the statute of limitations has run out, it doesn't make much sense for someone at Bonnie's new job to run and call Unsolved Mysteries and say, we've found her.

But why can't they show the episode and then have an update that says, "time has run out for this case...."?

I suppose with the murder cases that will never be a problem. But I'm so grateful to know about this because I never remembered this many "lost loves" cases - sometimes they get on my nerves. The show airs and someone finds out they have four hundred brothers and sisters. I'd rather see Bonnie. Oh well, hopefully someone who has it will post it on You Tube.

I am wondering, how do they get around this on the DVD's? - or maybe it is the same problem. I don't know.

All I know is, I joined Amazon Prime to see Bonnie Wilder and I wish they had made it clear that these weren't full episodes....

(Actually someone posted a clip from the episode on You Tube, just a few seconds...I'm starting to think that maybe they took that episode down because what the boss says about Bonnie is really f**** up and probably would make people very angry in 2017)

Yeah kinda sad they chopped up the Halloween special, that 90 minute Thanksgiving special, the 3rd Anniversary special to where there's only a few segments n tidbits from those specials. If your a UM fanatic like me it just leaves a whole in it all. Also although Stack has long ago passed, it would of been nice to of had an intro commentary from him so that future generations Would get a sense of how much Stack made UM what it is

Since a lot of the missing segments where left out for legal/privacy/statue of limitations reasons probably never. Once again the UM community is forced underground to make bootleg DVDS,undercover YouTube channels,n have segments/episodes floating all over the internet. The only way I envision is in like 50-60 years from now when UM becomes public material where no one can really profit from it.

I hear ya.

I just wish it wasn't so arbitrary. I understood the rationale for omitting the solved parental abduction cases given they're all adults now or died while missing, but yet as I'm making my way through Season 5 I'm now watching the Jonathan Ortiz case. Huh? Mom's been caught, son was long-ago reunited and things ultimately ended horribly in adulthood. (I'm grateful just for the wonderfully bad acting though)

I don't understand omitting some of these even if the statute has expired, like the Boston Rapist. Sure, those victims cases can't be heard but these guys don't just stop, he could have escalated to murder or still committing rapes that could still be prosecuted. It's still in the public interest to figure out who he was.

This is the Tony DeCampo segment. I don't believe it made it to Amazon. It doesn't even have a page on the UM wikia. I believe he was caught, but I'm unsure if he was ever convicted.

Please update your list - it is more accurate than some of the other 'season guide' stickies and is useful as a reference.

There are two more rollcalls you're missing - there are two different versions of the rollcall that trail the Salvatore Caruana segment, with different fugitives. Neither version of the rollcall is on amazon.

One version shows - Douglas Alan Costa/Lewis Michael Geiger/Lavana Floyd/Richard Green

The other version shows - Lavana Floyd/Richard Joseph Alvarado/William McGeehee/Alvaro Zapata.

I think the 2nd one is the one that aired in 1989, the one starting with Douglas Alan Costa the rerun. Not totally sure.

I have a friend who is mad about the Bonnie Wilder segment - I'd actually never seen it until he'd found a copy of it on a certain infamous video website and showed it to me (at least, not that I recall). He mentioned that since the authorities are no longer looking for her, that was probably why her case was omitted from the re-release, although I specifically remember other cases (the phony psychic was one - someone help me out with her name, please, Ann something-or-other) that were left in and it was specifically stated that the authorities were no longer looking for the suspect, so...

I'm SO bummed at the omission of L'Enfant. That one always scared the crap out of me. I loved it. Also, I'm also on Season 6, but I haven't run into the Dub Wackerhagen segment yet. That was one of my favorites. Is that upcoming?

Your thinking of Ann Corricelli (the phony psychic). The Fraud cases were my favorite and I am just as frustrated as you are as to why most of these types of cases got omitted from the Amazon Video edition of UM.

On the other hand, YES, Dub Wackerhagen is on the Amazon Video streams, that segment is in Season 7 Episode 3.

Bonnie was caught later on and went to jail for identity theft or something like that. UM Wiki has all the information

Maybe they'll surprise us with a Season 13 - Lost Segments season.

It's sad that of the 4 hosts of UM, none are around to narrate or provide the opening. Maybe they could have Keely Shaye Smith or Virginia Madsen provide a disclaimer at the beginning about how these cases are no longer active/statute of limitations/didn't fit with the theme of other seasons/etc.

UPDATE:

I have decided to do the rest of the Missing Segment Log. I have done the Episode Guides for Seasons 3-12, and I was waiting to see if the Missing Segment Log would ever be finished by the OP, but I will take the lead on this too. I enjoy doing this and I love to help out any fans of UM.

Please give me a few days (maybe a week at most) to get it done.

In the meantime, if you look at the Episode Guides for Seasons 10-12, you will see a list of missing segments at the end of Episode Guide entries.

Hot Jock is right! Amazon streaming has all of the HBO shows from pre-2015 hits such as The Wire, Sex & The City, and Eastbound & Down just to name a few. That alone is worth $10 a month!!!

The only other place to see the Stack Version of UM is on Hulu and Hulu only puts on 3 seasons at a time, not the whole 12 Seasons like Amazon does.

What you can do if money is tight is cancel Netflix for a few months and get Amazon Video and then a few months later you can switch back to Netflix and cancel Amazon.

Missing segments are only part of the problem. There's also heavily edited segments (presumably so that suspects who have since been cleared are not implicated).

For instance, I just watched the Doreen Picard segment and I realized there was a lot cut-out of it. It's been years since I've seen the original, but I am almost sure the original had a lot of detail about certain suspects. The new one had zero such information. Then I googled the case and realized that the guy convicted of the murder had since been cleared on DNA evidence (2015).

Anyone remember if the original discussed more than that one suspect?

Something that really bugs me about the Amazon edit is the fact that the guy in the lead-in card says "This PROGRAM'S about unsolved mysteries..." instead of saying "This PROGRAM IS about unsolved mysteries..." like it was in the original NBC broadcast. It drives me nuts that he doesn't say it as it is spelled out, haha... that is how passionate I am about this show. ;)

I don't even get the point of the new guy. His disclaimer is weak and did we really need to add "Tonight on" to the latter seasons considering this is a streaming platform now? If the original elements didn't exist or couldn't be used they could have been left out.

And a great deal of the segment also revolves around Michael Henley, whose remains were found shortly thereafter. It's possible that his family requested the segment not be shown anymore, as he was no longer missing. I don't recall seeing the case in syndication on Lifetime, either.

Yup. That's the perils of making a show about unsolved mysteries, they get solved in ways the original theories never suggested.

It would be nice if they could edit the segment to focus on Tara and maybe show the photo at the end as a footnote, since it’s somewhat relevant to the case only due to history (I’ve always been skeptical of that photo). Tara and her family deserve justice and closure.

Nope. An answer why (posted on page 1) -

"This was asked in the Reddit AMA with John Cosgrove & Terry Meurer:

We have a legal staff that keeps track of the cases to make sure that we do not infringe on anyone's rights. Sometimes a statute of limitations on a case has passed. We always try to be as respectful as we can be to the people who were featured in the segments.

They received a follow-up question "How could you be infringing on their rights when the episode has already been broadcasted? And what is the statute of limitations concerning?"

Answer:

Sometimes because the statute of limitations is up the law enforcement agency handling the case will ask us to stop airing it."

For some reason, the David Chase segment is omitted from the Stack episodes, but is included in the Farina ones. It's on the Farina version, season 5, episode 1.

That is weird. Were certain things edited out in the Farina version that made it somehow "acceptable" as far as you can tell?

Some re-enactment scenes were shortened and edited, but other than that, there wasn’t anything that was too different from the Stack version.

I think it's a pretty rarely spoken about segment. I recall seeing it years ago and may be the only one on here who's commented on it  I remember being frustrated that we never hear what sort of sentence the killer received or what happened to him at all.

I edited the original post with the other seasons.

There was a segment on one of CD's compilation discs that had never aired on Lifetime and may have never been broadcast on NBC. It was a parental kidnapping case from one of the later seasons. It was not listed on any episode guide or on the Wiki when I searched for any info on it a few years ago. The only reference that I could find online was a news article that had mentioned it had been solved. This was a few days before it was to be broadcast, so maybe NBC pulled it. It was a full segment. It wasn't a special alert or bulletin.

This segment was recorded from the UK from the Crime and Investigation channel or some true crime channel. Does anybody know the case I'm talking about? I haven't been able to find it again in the descriptions.

I found the segment. It was on another disc she sent that she got in a trade.

Missing Persons: Davey Estright/Wanted: David Estright

This case never made it to Lifetime. It aired on NBC on May 5, 1995. The segment has a Danny Dark voiceover update. It also has a parental abduction roll call with 3 cases.

Results: Captured. On May 3, 1995, two days before the story was supposed to air, David Estright was arrested in St. Matthews, Kentucky. Information given to the FBI led to his arrest. Davey was found safe and he was reunited with his mother the next day. Investigators learned that Davey had been dressed like a girl to conceal his identity. David pleaded guilty to custodial interference and was sentenced to one year in prison.

I'm on the hunt for one of the lost segments: the Bruno and Bobo sea lion killings:

https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Bruno_and_Bobo

The episode first aired on December 14, 1988. Here is the TV Guide listing for the episode:

"Reports on the deaths of three persons in a Nashville, Ind., house fire where Clarence Roberts is supposed to have died twice; a Carlsbad, Cal., teenager Jennifer Pratt who was in a coma for three months following a motorcycle accident; and the killing of Pacific sea lions in Redondo Beach, Cal. Also: updates on previous reports on the 1978 murders of two Tennessee women by Joe Shepard; and a suspected Los Angeles bank robber."

My question for you fine folks: Am I wasting my time?

I'm currently downloading a 100 gig folder with bootlegs aplenty in search for this clip. Can anyone here confirm if it even exists, or is it by all likelihood truly lost? Enormous thanks for any help!

I hope you were able to locate the segment. This case actually happened in my hometown and the reenactments are absolutely heartbreaking. As astute observers have noted elsewhere there might be a few cases profiled in the original TV broadcast of Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack that have subsequently been omitted in the FilmRise version on YT and yet retained in the FilmRise version of Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina on YT. So hopefully this "episode guide" might be of some assistance in that regard too.

Beyond just finding the missing segments, has anyone considered the next logical step of restoring the entire original series, either by finding old recordings or by mixing segments back into the original episodes? That would seem to be the definitive series, perhaps even with new updates.

I'd do that in a second if I had the software. There was a season one set that I helped produce where someone took the Filmrise episodes and edited in the missing segments, but he's not doing them anymore.

Well I have the software and technical know how, but for the most part lack the missing segments other than a few I have collected.

I think the ideal project would be to find and preserve all the original broadcasts, necessarily a huge task if its even possible.

Where that is not possible using the available segments to reconstruct episodes would be a good second best option.

It is a huge task. Probably harder now then it was a few years ago since sites like iOffer are long gone. A lot of the original broadcast episodes from the first 6 seasons are out there, you just have to find the right trader. I searched for a few years and gathered most of them.

Can anyone confirm that the "Missing: Therese Rose Walsh/Wanted: Merle Marie Vanderheiden" segment is missing from Amazon? It was on the 3-14-97 Season episode originally. It aired on the same show with the Tupac segment originally but it appears that segment was replaced in the amazon S9E14 version with another lost love case.

It's missing. I think pretty much none of the custodial dispute segments made it to Amazon for legal reasons (and because the children are now grown/perhaps statute of limitations has run out).

FilmRise has went and updated 20 segments as noted by TJ here (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=6083192&postcount=3). I was curious what was different and decided to make a list (please correct me if I'm wrong on any of these):

-S1E6 features the full Harold & Thelma Swain segment. It's something that I have never seen before until today.

-S1E14 has a new update on David Misch being arrested for the murder of Michaela Garecht.

-S3E6 features the updated update on the Danny Paquette case to say that his killer, Eric Windhurst was released on parole.

-S4E8 has a new update on Roger Dean's murder and how DNA matched Michael Jefferson.

-S5E15 has a new update on Kaitlyn Arquette and how Paul Apodaca confessed to her murder in 2021.

-S5E20 has an update on the segment "Gabby's Bones", which were identified as Joseph Mulvaney. It also has replaced the Tony Miller update with the Kevin Poulsen update.

-S7E12 has an update on the Sumter County Jane and John Doe being identified as James Freund and Pam Buckley.

-S8E2 has added the Aimee Willard segment and update.

-S9E1 has an update on Kristen Smart and how Paul Flores and his father Ruben were charged for her murder.

-S9E18 has an update at the end of their Spokane Bombing segment saying that Robert Berry has been released from prison.

-S10E7 has an update that Alan Golder has been released on "special parole".

For the Farina episodes:

-S2E2 has the same update on Alan Golder.

-S3E10 has the Roger Dean update with an unknown male narrator.

-S4E15 has the Kristen Smart update with the same unknown male narrator.

-S6E9 has the update on Kaitlyn Arquette with the same narrator.

-S6E10 has the Danny Paquette update with the same narrator.

-S6E11 has the newest update on Dub Wackerhagen now being seen as a victim of foul play, with the same narrator. It also completely removed the Tony Miller segment.

-S6E15 has the update on the Orange Sock Murders and how Alan Phillips was arrested and charged for the murders.

-S7E4 has completely removed any mention of the Tony Miller segment or update.

-S8E4 has the update on the Harold and Thelma Swain murders, as well as the shortened version of the segment.

Every mention of Tony Miller has oddly been wiped from both the Stack and Farina versions it seems.

ETA: My memory might be wrong on the Harold & Thelma Swain segment. I don't remember ever seeing some of the interviews at the beginning, or some of the re-enactment shots featuring Donnie Barrantine. But it does have the newest update at the end about Dennis Perry being released and exonerated.

Good work TheCars1986!👏

TBH my sole wish is that CM would simply make available every episode that was ever broadcast originally on TV full and unedited. But, I reckon pigs'll fly before that ever happens so I won't be holding my breath.

I'm glad I was able to download all the episodes, first of Farina and then Stack, when they were first uploaded to YT years ago, especially since FR is now further cutting and pasting so, for example, the Farina episodes, which were as originally aired on TV to my knowledge are now seemingly going to follow the Stack episodes mishmash🤦

Re the Harold & Thelma Swain segment I compared the FR version and the original TV episode I've got earlier in the year and the only portion edited out I noticed was Stack's concluding remarks and the hotline number (about 25 seconds in all).

It would be nice if they allowed download of these episodes. I have every episode available for myself. Just because it exists doesn't mean it needs to be "aired". I would like to rewatch some of these for nostalgia. They need to be available somewhere.

Reading through this thread it appears that someone has compiled all of the missing segments into some consumable form for download/viewing.

If someone would be so kind as to send me a PM and point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Were any segements removed at request of family and/or law enforcement?

Were any segements removed at request of family and/or law enforcement?

Well, its a bit of a mystery honestly, as UM has given a mixture of illogical and contradictory statements on the matter when asked.
Although I have not completed my project on this yet, what I have gathered is that segments were removed for a variety of reasons. Note that this list is not MECE.

1.Segments that were embarrassing to UM, such as the Gulf Breeze UFO

2.Segments where the statute of limitations had expired on a wanted criminal. Why exactly this should make a segment worthy of removal is unclear, and this rule was not applied universally either.

3.Segments involving persons who later objected to their appearance on UM, a few of these are well known cases, how many others it applied to is uncertain.

4.Segments that LE objected to releasing for whatever reason. This has to be one of the more disturbing reasons as it seems to suggest LE can have chilling effects on the media. I suspect much of the reason UM complied with these requests was knowing they were launching a new series and needing to keep LE on their good side for new material.

5.Segments that "didn't fit anywhere" which seems particularly like a pretext since with the format they ended up with there should have been plenty of flexibility (ie. episodes of varying length, repeated updates, reordered segments, etc.)

6.Segments where rights were unavailable for some reason. This is a bit unclear to me, and I am not a copyright lawyer, but some have suggested that UM needed to obtain permission from everyone involved to be able to stream the episodes as opposed to air them. I'm a bit skeptical of this but have not done the research to confirm that.

In addition to this, its worth noting that many segments that are included have been edited (and I am working on a complete run down of that as well). My guess is well over half of the segments presented are not the original versions.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know why Amazon is leaving certain segments out? I was particularly vexed that they left out the infamous Bonnie Wilder segment.

Sometimes there are legal reasons, for example, the statute of limitations has expired. I believe Bonnie is deceased now so they probably see no reason to air it even though it's a great and unintentionally funny segment. Someone has uploaded it to FB. https://fb.watch/oQ0bDA5C-H/?mibextid=VuxXZ0

So in my research I think I've come across 3 missing segments that I haven't been able to find listed anywhere else thus far. If I'm mistaken and they're listed on this thread (which I admit is really l o n g so I haven't been able to look through it in-depth) or elsewhere on this forum please correct me.

I'm going by the Declassified FBI Memos (see Declassified FBI Files on Unsolved Mysteries Episodes (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=413459))

Anyway the 3 missing segments are I believe:

1) An update to the David Rhodes case, which according to the FBI Memos (p. 147) was scheduled for the September 6, 1989 episode;

2) & 3) And updates to the Ronald Denslow and Joseph Hutchinson cases respectively, which according to the FBI Memos (p. 210) were scheduled for the September 13, 1989 episode.

I believe FilmRise deleted these cases and these particular updates entirely from its series.

So does anyone know if these updates were actually broadcast on TV on the September 6, 1989 and September 13, 1989 episodes (like the Mike Riemer & Diana Robertson case was in the former episode; and the Todd McAfee case was in the latter episode) as the FBI Memos note? And does anyone actually have them recorded on file and have posted them online (like I've seen of the other two aforementioned cases ie Riemer/Robertson & McAfee)? Since, like I said, I haven't found any episode guides that fans have compiled with these updates listed for these episodes anywhere to date and I haven't ever seen these updates either.

Hence, I assume they're missing segments that we haven't been made aware of and so I guess should be added to the log if they haven't already?🤔🤷

Filmrise this past week dumped 19 previously unavailable episodes of Forensic Files onto their streaming packages and their FAST channels are currently streaming them all as a "The Lost Episodes Marathon".

Maybe there's hope for Unsolved Mysteries.

I know it was a year or so ago, but they actually went and inserted the Aimee Willard segment in years after they uploaded all of the Stack episodes to YouTube...so I remain hopeful.

Even if they don't want to release the expired-statute cases (even though Filmrise has no issue with their old criminals and their modern reputations) maybe we could some day get the Burr and Malden segments.

The segments you mention are included in the FilmRise streaming versions.

For example:

Nyleen Marshall - Season 3, Episode 10
Bill Rundle - Season 12, Episode 1
Kari Lynn Nixon - Season 1, Episode 24
Kristi Krebs - Season 7, Episode 10
Dale Kerstetter - Season 2, Episode 5
Patricia Carlton - Season 5, Episode 5
Trenchcoat Robbers (aka the Valley Bank Robbery) - Season 4, Episode 19

I am less sure about where the Lifetime-specific versions can be found. Personally I am more concerned about just having the main segments in some form.

I have more or less given up on collecting all of the updates (aside from the ones I already have). For a few reasons:

1. For some cases there are multiple updates. So the information featured in the first update (or even the second, etc) is out-of-date.

2. It can be very difficult (even impossible) to determine which update you have when there are multiple. Unless you have the full/original/uncut broadcast episodes for comparison (which do not exist anymore in many cases).

3. The main advantage of the FilmRise versions (aside from improved picture quality over VHS captures) is that they truly make an effort to ensure that each case is being actively updated. They go so far as to actually go into YouTube and update the existing episodes periodically when there are new updates.

Each YouTube season (except for 6 oddly enough) has at least one updated episode compared to when they were originally updated to YouTube almost 10 years ago (roughly 2016-2017).

One question I have is whether FilmRise also does this for the streaming versions provided on other platforms such as Amazon Prime. Somehow I doubt it; there is a similar phenomenon for World's Wildest Police Videos, where FilmRise has gradually uploaded previously missing episodes to YouTube but not other platforms it seems.

We need all these UM missing segments on DVD and Blu-Ray! 8K Definition!

But sadly I don't think that will ever happen.

Actually all of them in big boxed set DVD Case!

Some streamers back in 2009-2010 uploaded a ton of them to

YouTube with Robert Stack.

Then YT took them down probably for copyright

reasons. If they were copyrighted how did the uploaders

get them on YT in the first place??

Robert Stack was the best!
