Nickelodeon gets it's name from the movie theaters that featured machines called nickelodeons that played mini movies that operated by putting in a nickel and were popular in the 1940's during World War II. On Nickelodeon itself the channel actually debuted in 1979 with the debut of a show called Pinwheel and was bought by MTV Music Television in the 80's. In the cartoon sense Nickelodeon debuted Nicktoons in 1991 and has a channel devoted to the Nicktoons called Nicktoons Network
