"Supernatural" Boss Previews "More Adult" Scooby-Doo Crossover Episode
by Samantha Highfill
Oct. 13, 2017

It was an idea that had been discussed in the "Supernatural" writers’ room since at least season 4: What if the show did a full animated episode?

Only, when you factor in time and money, things get a little complicated. “We have ideas floating around sometimes for years before we use them, and that’s the benefit of being on a long-running show,” co-showrunner Andrew Dabb tells EW.

It wasn’t until Dabb received a call from his friend Jeremy Adams at Warner Bros. Animation that the words “Scooby-Doo” found their way into the mix.

“He was like, ‘Why haven’t they done a crossover with Scooby-Doo?'” Dabb recalls. His response? “That is an excellent question.” From there, the conversations with Warner Bros. Animation began.

And thanks to an early season 13 renewal from The CW, the show suddenly had enough lead time to make it a reality. “The script was finalized and the guys recorded their parts I believe in March of this year and it will air probably about March of next year,” Dabb says.

As for the episode itself, Dabb continues, “It’s going to be an episode of Supernatural with Scooby-Doo in it. It’s not going to be an episode of Scooby-Doo with the guys in it. It’s more adult than your average episode of Scooby-Doo.”

Co-showrunner Robert Singer adds, “Scooby is the marquee this year. The script really works. It’s just going to be great.”

"Supernatural" To Premiere "Scooby-Doo" Crossover Episode at PaleyFest
by Samantha Highfill
Feb. 22, 2018

"Supernatural" fans are only a little over a month away from the highly anticipated "Scooby-Doo" crossover episode, but a few lucky fans will actually get to see it sooner than the rest.

When "Supernatural" hits PaleyFest on March 20, it’s bringing a special treat. "Supernatural‘s" PaleyFest event will serve as the world premiere for crossover, which is appropriately titled “Scoobynatural.”

The crossover — which will air on Thursday, March 29 on The CW for the rest of the world — was first announced at The CW Upfronts in May 2017. And for the most part, details of the episode have been kept under wraps. At this point, all we really know is what co-showrunner Andrew Dabb previously told EW: “It’s more adult than your average episode of Scooby-Doo.”

As for its PaleyFest premiere, the episode is set to air before members of "Supernatural‘s" cast and creative team take the stage for a panel.

Sam, Dean, and Castiel Meet the Mystery Gang in Scooby-Doo Crossover
by Samantha Highfill
March 8, 2018

The Supernatural/Scooby-Doo crossover starts exactly how you’d expect: Dean wrestling a stuffed dinosaur that’s come to life. What? Didn’t see that one coming?

After a case-of-the-week puts Dean in a wrestling match with the live plushy — not the show’s first — a grateful pawnshop owner offers the guys a free TV to say thanks. Sam’s not too keen on the idea, but Dean’s never one to turn down a gift. So, he takes the TV back to the bunker to create his “Dean Cave.”

Only, everything’s not as it seems with the present. Spoiler: The boys are sucked into a Scooby-Doo cartoon.

“Once they get over their amazement at being in the cartoon, two things happen,” co-showrunner Robert Singer tells EW.

“They say, ’We’ve been in a situation like this before with the Trickster and I think we’re supposed to play this out.’ And then they realize they’re in a Scooby-Doo cartoon, which makes Dean incredibly excited because Scooby-Doo was his favorite cartoon growing up.”

In fact, Dean’s extensive Scooby knowledge will come in handy rather quickly when he recognizes the episode they’re in (which is based on the 1970 Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! episode “A Night of Fright Is No Delight”). But this episode isn’t exactly a repeat.

This time, there’s a Supernatural-level monster at work, and, as co-showrunner Andrew Dabb puts it, “It gets pretty dark.”

Singer adds, “There are things you wouldn’t see in a regular Scooby-Doo cartoon.” In other words, the monster won’t be a man in a mask. “They walk into an old episode of Scooby-Doo,” explains Dabb. “But it may end up being a new episode of Supernatural.”

EW has an exclusive first look at the hour, including a shot of Dean holding hands with Daphne, which is no accident.

“Dean came of age in a time before the internet when Daphne wasn’t so bad,” Dabb says. “Dean has very strong opinions on all the Scooby characters, but especially Daphne and Fred.”

And he’ll get to share them all when “Scoobynatural” airs on Thursday, March 29, at 8 p.m. ET on the CW.
