Katy Perry Confirmed as "American Idol" Judge
by Liam Mathews
May 16, 2017
Pop superstar Katy Perry will be a judge on ABC's "American Idol" revival when it debuts in 2018, the network confirmed Tuesday during its upfront presentation.
"I am honored and thrilled to be the first judge bringing back the American Idol tradition of making dreams come true for incredible talents with authentic personalities and real stories," Perry said in a statement.
"I'm always listening to new music, and love discovering diamonds in the rough - from mentoring young artists on my label, or highlighting new artists on my tours, I want to bring it back to the music."
"We are thrilled to be ushering in this new era of American Idol with Katy leading the charge," said ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey.
"Her incredible accolades speak for themselves. We are so lucky to have this strong and talented woman help inspire and guide the next crop of artists as they pursue their dreams."

I'd say this will probably bomb but it won't because there will be lots of idiots that watch it.
AI should've died years ago.

Katy Perry is Proud of her Big "American Idol" Paycheck
by Gil Kaufman, Billboard
5/24/17
Katy Perry is all about equality.
The singer, who is making the rounds to promote her upcoming album, Witness, dropped by New York's KTU radio Tuesday to talk about the speculation over how big a paycheck she's pulling down for her upcoming gig as a judge on ABC's reboot of "American Idol".
While Perry wouldn't talk hard numbers, she's very excited about putting some balance into the pay equation.
"I’m really proud that as a woman I got paid," she told Cubby and Carolina co-host Carolina Bermudez. "You know why? I got paid, pretty much, more than any guy that’s been on that show. By the way, I love men. So I’m a paid woman and I’m ready for a beautiful man."
Perry also said what to expect when she takes a judging chair.
"I really wanted to join this show at the right time. I always have. We've always been in negotiations for several years — it's never been right, but now when they kind of like brought it to a new home...it's perfect.
The reality is I am polite, but firm and I am super realistic. This show is about finding real talent, making peoples' dreams come true and additionally hearing their stories.... I want to see you. I want to hear you. I want to witness you."

I'd like to watch and would like the new version of American Idol to succeed but the show hasn't even aired yet and it already sounds like a trainwreck.
I've heard ABC wants Ryan Seacrest back as the host. But I've also heard they wanted to produce the show for "cheaper" than what Fox was forking out when it was on their network. But they've already paid Katy Perry and whoever else is going to be judges for the show such a ridiculous amount of money (several million dollars it's being reported) that it's already becoming quite expensive. And "sources" are saying Ryan Seacrest wouldn't agree to do it now unless he was being paid more to host the show than what the judges are getting. And now Ryan Seacrest has his new job as co-host of Live With Kelly and Ryan which of course tapes in New York City while American Idol will be done in Los Angeles and it's also being said that it's very doubtful he'd be willing to fly back and forth every week while American Idol's live episodes are being produced and broadcast. Which I don't blame him for since he's only had the Live job for a few months and has probably just gotten himself settled in New York City for the time being. So I think it's very likely they'll end up getting a brand new host and I really don't care to watch unless they got Seacrest to be the host again. If they got him back and some judges that the public thought were likeable I think it would definitely work. But the way things are looking I see a rather short and dismal run for this version of American Idol. And I really don't like Katy Perry either by the way.

Katy Perry on joining American Idol: "Literally, we are wasting our time if we do not find a star” (http://www.tvguide.com/news/american-idol-katy-perry-waste-of-time/)
The singer was asked at the TV press tour to name the last three Idol winners. "I can't, because this is the first season of American Idol," Perry joked. But seriously, she added, "They need another legit American Idol."
