View Full Version : TV shows that didn't last long enough
glickmam 05-16-2017, 10:09 AM Here are a list of shows that, IMHO, didn't last long enough:
Joan of Arcadia - did very well in the first season, with Joan learning from God about how to make the world a better place and was very low key. Unfortunately, however, after Nina Tassler became president of CBS Entertainment prior to the second season, she began demanding that the show begin incorporating more melodrama in a misguided notion that it would attract more teen viewers. This did not work, of course, as the show was later canceled at the end of its second season.
tlc38tlc38 05-16-2017, 10:21 AM The Torkelsons: It should've went for at least 4 seasons. And, "Almost Home" should've never happened.
The Ropers: We should've been given at least one more season. I actually liked this series.
Mama's Family: Just one more season so we could've seen the family interacting with Tiffany Thelma.
ALF: One more season to wrap up season 4's ending. However, years later we were given the TV movie "Project ALF".
Murder, She Wrote: CBS killed this show. As far as I'm concerned it could still be running today if given the opportunity.

bmasters9 05-16-2017, 11:44 AM Petrocelli on NBC-- I wish there would have been one more go of it (1976-77), perhaps two, so we could see Tony and Maggie finish that house.
Mace Dolex 05-16-2017, 04:23 PM Three's A Crowd - IMO it was a worthy spin-off of Three's Company.
V The Series - not the garbage from 2009, I'm talking of the 1984 version that ended on a cliffhanger.

PhoenixAcres 05-18-2017, 03:05 PM Shows that ended way too early:
Gilligan's Island
The Outer Limits
The Honeymooners
F Troop
Shows that had relatively long, successful runs (5+ seasons) but still could have gone a bit longer:
Get Smart
Green Acres
The Dick Van Dyke Show
The Twilight Zone
Dream of Jeannie
The Rifleman
There are others but these are the ones on top of my head.

You read my mind! The Rifleman had a good run (168 episodes), however, one more season would have been nice because Mark would have been 18 years old and there could have been more stories about him as he faces his late teens. Also, maybe actually using a rifle.
As for the question of this thread, I would have liked to have seen these TV shows last for at least 1-2 seasons longer...
Star Trek (the original series). I know the quality of the show slipped in its 3rd season, but there probably still would have been some good episodes).
Gilligan's Island. For sure. With this type of show, 3 seasons was not enough.
The Munsters. Same as with Gilligan's Island
Kung Fu.
Futurama
stevea 05-18-2017, 09:13 PM Star Trek--as mentioned. This was really a shame--it lost budget, so virtually no location shooting in season 3.
Honeymooners--also mentioned. 1 season definitely not enough. Jackie's decision, unfortunately.
Addams Family-- again also mentioned. Too bad, since 2 seasons don't make a very good syndication package, even though it's been successful.
Mama's Family--I second that post. A 7th season for the reasons stated. Also, would love to see a reunion that definitely could be done. This would make a great project for MeTV to take on (have you seen those LOL VL promos--"I ain't beamin' anywhere with you" et al?)
I Dream of Jeannie -- they could have done a 6th and 7th season, but they would have had to delay the wedding to a planned finale.
Back To You -- ended too soon--was driven off track by writers strike. Needed more than one season--great show.

Jackie Gleason didn't decide to cancel THE HONEYMOONERS; the sponsor-Buick-did. (back then a shows sponsor could do that. Procter & Gamble did it to THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW but Sheldon Leonard got them to reverse their decision)
jimpickens 05-19-2017, 02:53 AM UFO this show was fun and should've lasted at least 3 seasons.

Kasey 05-27-2017, 11:28 AM The 5 Mrs. Buchanans (this should have shifted to Lifetime when CBS cancelled it)
Delta (ABC should have kept this on after Roseanne instead of Thurs nights)
The Powers That Be
The Patty Duke Show (so we could have had at least one season in color)
Phyllis (although they would have had to bring in another ancient, crotchety character to act as a foil since Judith Lowry had died)
Sordid Lives (at least the reunion movie is coming)
Just the Ten of Us (ABC replaced it in the TGIF lineup with a more adult show called Going Places that went nowhere)
UMFaninMD 05-27-2017, 12:38 PM The 4400. It ended on a cliffhanger and was starting to come together.
Friday the 13th: The Series. It was an innovative horror show and it could have gone on a few more years.
glickmam 06-24-2017, 01:00 AM Jackie Gleason didn't decide to cancel THE HONEYMOONERS; the sponsor-Buick-did. (back then a shows sponsor could do that. Procter & Gamble did it to THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW but Sheldon Leonard got them to reverse their decision)
Actually, Proctor & Gamble did not have The Dick Van Dyke Show cancelled. If anything, when they heard about the cancellation, they went straight to CBS and threatened to yank all of their popular soap operas (As the World Turns, The Edge of Night, Guiding Light, and Search for Tomorrow) off of the network's daytime schedule if the show wasn't renewed.
treky 06-24-2017, 01:42 AM that's not what I read in THE OFFICAL DICK VAN DYKE SHOW HANDBOOK (I think that's the title) And I've heard interviews with Sheldon Leonard and Carl Reiner where they've said the same thing.
