View Full Version : Did Alice get any kind of salary or was she the Brady's indentured servant?
peppypacer 05-12-2017, 08:21 PM I don't recall ever hearing that she got any actual cash or salary from Mike Brady. It seems that in exchange for the small room, and I guess food, she had to basically do chores for the Bradys 24/7. Doesn't really seem like a good deal for Alice but a real great deal for the Bradys. Maybe Alice was so lonely that she allowed herself to be taken advantage of.
Bonniegirl 05-12-2017, 09:56 PM Yes! Alice got paid money! ;) I remember one time she called her friend to ask to borrow some money, her medical insurance payment was due or something and she was short till payday! It was an ep. where the kids were going to ask Alice to borrow some money and they over heard the phone conversation and that was that! ;)
I actually think Alice had a pretty cool job!:)

With all due respect, that's a really dark vision of the Brady family; I cannot imagine that Sherwood Schwartz intended the audience to interpret the Bradys as virtual slave owners.
Even if we never saw cash exchanging hands (and it's been so long since I watched the show, I can't remember if there ever was such a scene), I'm SURE we were supposed to assume that Alice was, in fact, paid.
Alice had her own money and her own home also; she did not live with the Bradys.
Haven't seen the show in a while, but I don't remember it this way.
Babalu 05-13-2017, 03:29 PM Alice was actually the last in a long line of domestics kidnapped by the Brady family in a notorious white slavery ring. Each male Brady had had to kidnap a young innocent (OK, maybe not so young) and bring her back to endure indentured servitude to the family. It was referred to as making your cartilage. The previous servants were kept in the basement dungeon which was never seen on screen in the original series. You can learn all about it in the ABC after school special The Brady Brides Beat Their Bridesmaids now available on Blu-ray.
Smartboy 05-13-2017, 04:44 PM Alice had her own money and her own home also; she did not live with the Bradys. Also there was an episode during the first season where Mike offered to increase Alice's salary due to the increased workload of the two families combining, but she refused the offer.
Yes, Alice did live with the Brady's. There were episodes in which we saw her room in the Brady house.

That's because Alice lived in the Brady house, her room was off the kitchen near the laundry room. As mentioned above me we saw her room.
Donthe2nd 05-14-2017, 05:04 PM Looks like I got it wrong; I've removed the post. For some reason I just assumed she went home at night, and I remember an episode where she is seen in an apartment.
bellczar 05-14-2017, 06:47 PM That was the apartment of her friend, Kay, who advises that she's gotten too close to the Bradys and should leave. Then Kay replaced Alice at the Brady residence. Episode: "Goodbye, Alice, Hello."
Tweety 05-19-2017, 11:35 PM Of course Alice got paid.
And in one episode in which she was going to leave the Bradys (because she thought she wasn't needed any more shortly after Mike and Carol were married), either Mike or Carol suggests that Alice might be leaving because they don't pay her enough... but she certainly got a salary.

It was Mike. He said to Carol, that we doubled the size of the family and doubled Alice's work load and never offered her a raise. We need to giver her more money, even if it hurts a little.

Would Alice be a lesbian now?
caladon 05-27-2018, 06:09 AM Here's an older thread regarding Alice and her relationship with the Bradys.

Well, since she regularly dated Sam the butcher, I'd say "no" unless for whatever reason they eliminated him from the canon.
