View Full Version : The last few episodes
James 05-05-2002, 11:29 PM Barry Williams' book Growing Up Brady says that the last dozen or so episodes of "The Brady Bunch" lacked the energy the rest of the episodes had. Can anyone explain as to why? I mean, I watch them and find them not that much different than the rest.
With all of the backstage turmoil that was going on, particularly with Robert Reed and his constant fighting with the writers and producers, it could be easy to see why the rest of the cast could have grown weary of doing the show. I also heard that many of the kids were at time embarrased about the dialogue they had to say, mostly because as kids themselves, they felt "kids would never" act or talk like this.
After so many years together, a lot of casts start to look bored on screen.

Could you please point out some examples, TJL? They looked rather normal to me! (Then again I should have paid closer attention.)

The only thing I can think of that fits the "embarrassed" category was Cousin Oliver's quote "Parents never have time to teach their kids about s**" or something similar. Oh, and also Grandpa Hutchins' quote about whether judges wear clothes under their robes.
hawaii five-o 04-02-2004, 07:26 PM Cindy dressed as Shirly Temple would qualify as embarrasing.

It would have been cute season #1. Season #5 was silly.
I feel bad for poor Susan Olsen having to enter puberty and having to act 5 years old.Plus I really hope Cindy would not be stupid enough to think she looked anything like Shirley Temple.

Thindy forgot she liked peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I think it's possible.
Cashodeen 04-04-2004, 04:06 AM By the way, the last dozen episodes are different from the rest because they weren't even planning on having that many episodes in season 5 until the last minute, and they had scramble for plots. ABC at first had the Brady Bunch at 13 episodes that season.

Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head. The rest of ABC's Friday night sitcom lineup was cancelled at midseason, and Sherwood Schwartz was surprised when TBB was picked up for the rest of the season, so the writing staff had to throw scripts together.
The first half of season five, which was planned, has some minor classics, like "Peter and the Wolf", "Marcia Gets Creamed", "Adios Johnny Bravo" and "Miss Popularity". It's not until later in the season when we get duds like "Top Secret", "The Snooperstar", and "The Hustler"
hawaii five-o 04-04-2004, 03:28 PM Seasons 4 and 5 are the only seasons I was old enough to remember watching as part of ABC's Friday Night line up. As a kid I thought all of season 5 was great, but now as an adult, I can see the difference.

Well I can't take the credit for knowing that on my own. If I had come across this thread when it was posted, I wouldn't have been able to answer it. The poster, TV Guy explained it last year. ;) :D

Hahahaha.
I was just joking anyways. I have seen you here before.
algebra74 06-13-2004, 03:05 PM I totally comend Robert Reed for doing what he did. I would have never taken on the role to begin with. The plots, especially in the fifth season were just stupid. I mean, dying rabits with hair tonic and selling them was just a bit far out. Maybe the writers on this show could pay more attention to writers of The Dick Van Dyke Show; those who actually know what comedy really is.
