View Full Version : Mary Celeste macbeth06 04-11-2017, 07:18 PM What happened to it. Todd Mueller 04-11-2017, 09:10 PM What happened to it. Mystery. DALLASTEXAN!! 04-14-2017, 05:35 AM it is indeed a unsolved mystery. macbeth06 04-14-2017, 04:29 PM Did they ever find the people or try to dive for. To see if there are any bodies. Or any thing. Cori aka ChrisSCrush 06-18-2017, 02:08 AM Did they ever find the people or try to dive for. To see if there are any bodies. It was the middle of the ocean and they haven't even found huge targets such as the Cyclops. macbeth06 06-18-2017, 04:42 PM Did they ever find anything. PracTz 06-18-2017, 06:19 PM It was the middle of the ocean and they haven't even found huge targets such as the Cyclops. True-and there have been literally been thousands of shipwrecks down the ages in the Atlantic Ocean these last two centuries alone. Hence; even if someone found something from the Mary Celeste, unless knew exactly what was missing from that vessel (or, for that matter, the remains' ages, body types, etc.), it's unlikely a searcher then or now could have discovered anything. Oh, and we need to keep in mind that the empty vessel was first discovered off the coast of Portugal which was very busy shipping nation (in fact its name was derived from the Roman word for 'port'). Personally, I think the cargo went bad and they thought they'd better ride in the lifeboat until it was safe to return but the lifeboat's tether got loose and the captain, his family and the entire crew were stuck in that lifeboat with no one to rescue them and eventually drowned. Tragically, the captain's six-year-old son (who was in the US with relatives at the time) not only was orphaned but would never find out exactly what had happened to his family. That also was the case for the families of the crew. :( Necco 06-26-2017, 08:39 AM This could well be right. I think we have some trouble identifying with things exploding as was common in the early industrial age. Everything from coal dust to molasses tanks would go off, wipe out city blocks and kill dozens. If they smelled alcohol, a prudent captain might well have abandoned ship until the wind picked up and cleared the air. Poor molasses. It goes on one murder spree in Boston and no one ever lets it forget. Does it get credit for all the times it doesn't murder people? No. How about all those delicious cookies? No. It's always "Remember that time you drowned a bunch of people in Boston?"  :happyface Drakken 06-26-2017, 09:05 AM Fumes got out, due to a seepage of alcohol through a few porous barrels. The denatured alcohol was poisonous, and the crew got scared it might ignite and explode and they fled to the towed lifeboat until the danger passed. However, the rope snapped, the lifeboat got lost, and they all went to sea. There are far weirder and mysterious ghost ship stories than the Mary Celeste, that one is basically solved. No trace of mutiny or piracy and obviously paranormal explanations are to be seen with skepticism. macbeth06 06-30-2019, 03:12 AM Intresting what other stories are there thinwhiteduke74 06-30-2019, 08:18 PM or you could conduct a search and find the relevant thread bell83 07-01-2019, 09:20 AM or you could conduct a search and find the relevant thread https://www.databankimx.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/af55805c-191d-48fb-858a-b0d1bcf4f608.jpg  macbeth06 07-01-2019, 05:18 PM The forums are to discuss if you dont have nothing to say dont respond LooksLikeCRicci 07-01-2019, 05:27 PM I think the Mary Celeste exploded as the theorists believe. We haven’t found anything significant for that reason. It’s kinda like MH 370, but on a much smaller scale. ETA: I’m mixing up cases again! LOLOLOL! But seriously— they abandoned ship for whatever reason and were lost at sea. I don’t believe they were abducted or anything. macbeth06 07-01-2019, 05:35 PM I think the Mary Celeste exploded as the theorists believe. We haven’t found anything significant for that reason. The UM segment makes it seem like the line towing the lifeboat snapped and then the crew became lost at sea. But, if a gust of wind caused the rope to snap, why weren't they able to catch up to the line or the boat that had most of its sails furled? UM made it seem like they intended on basically hitching the lifeboat to the Mary Celeste until whatever perceived danger went away. Not mentioned on UM, but in this (https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/data/batches/curiv_rubidoux_ver01/data/sn85042462/00175035898/1910103001/1391.pdf) newspaper article says that the ships log reported "ominous rumblings and small explosions" prior to being abandoned. To me that would suggest that there was a louder than usual explosion, and in a panic, they fled to the lifeboat and then cut the rope because they feared the ship was going to either sink or explode. |
