View Full Version : Gomer just really killed it for me
Tiffy540 04-08-2017, 10:37 AM I can't watch although I try my best to suffer through it; Gomer and the actor was really an a** hole in real life, that he messed up the whole show & the whole story-line. But his cousin, can't think of his name I really enjoyed him; he was also a serious actor in other stuff I.E. Alfred Hitchcock.
Side note after season 3, the show went 'darker'; not as funny; had some funny parts but even with Barney the show's stories were not ... great.

I always liked Gomer and I've never heard anything about Jim Nabors being an ******* in real-life. It's well-known though that Andy Griffith was a total jerk and was known to scream at people to leave him alone if they approached and tried talking to him.

PhoenixAcres 04-08-2017, 08:02 PM I think Gomer was pretty funny sometimes. Though for some reason I prefer Goober.
I have to disagree that post-season three was "darker". Maybe Andy was more serious and not as smiley as before, but the stories were still fun and lighthearted with only a few exceptions.
scrapple 04-08-2017, 10:00 PM Enjoyed Gomer immensely, and could see why Andy felt he could carry his own show. I could only take Goober in small doses, and when he started getting LOTS of airtime (after Barney left), it was too much for me.
Yong Fang 04-08-2017, 10:42 PM Jim Nabors an a..hole? I have always heard from everyone that he is really a very nice, humble individual who loves fans and people. Basically a smart version of his most famous character.
Mayberry'sBadBoy 05-24-2017, 04:01 PM That's kind of surprising considering Jim's replacement George Lindsey was a certifiable A-Hole. In addition to being difficult on set (He and Andy frequently argued behind the scenes over things that were George's fault) He also was very nasty to fans. I can't remember where I heard, but I remember hearing about a time he, Howard Morris, and Hal Smith were giving autographs at a fan convention and George royally blasted a young fan who politely told George he liked his Judy Judy Judy bit. Morris and Smith were less than pleased with this and if I'm remembering correctly George was asked to leave and not come back. I've heard nothing but nice things about Jim Nabors.
magellan333 05-24-2017, 09:55 PM I've never heard a harsh word spoken of Jim Nabors. By all accounts I've read he is a very good person and friend. I've heard George Lindsey could be rough around the edges and even per his own autobiography he was a bit arrogant at times.

I always pictured Hal Smith as a nice guy in real life.
JMidnight_99 10-31-2017, 08:07 PM Attacking someone so generally isn't fair. Everyone has good and bad points, so anyone can be attacked if you just focus on the negative. There are awful people in the world, but it's best proven by stating the bad things they're responsible for, instead of just name-calling.
This sounds like an opinion to me. That's what message boards are for. You don't wanna hear opinions you might not like? Don't read the message board. Personally, I think the Gomer character was over the top stupid and probably the product of a brother/sister wedding.

No wonder Frances Bavier and Andy had fights if Andy was always yelling. I’m surprised Don Knotts and Andy were good friends. It makes you feel cheated when you hear that Andy Griffith was not a nice man. Boy was he a good actor. Don Knotts, in my opinion, seemed like a nice person. Am I wrong?
Mayberry'sBadBoy 11-04-2017, 11:45 PM Don Knotts was a very nice person who despite having the deck stacked against him always came through quite happy. Even towards the end of his life, he still kept up the happy spirit
Scrabjan1 11-05-2017, 10:09 AM It was stated that after Don left because Andy wouldn’t cut him in on the wealth of the show, Andy was always yelling at people. When Knotts came back for a few shows they appeared best friends. Very confusing when you read about all the troubles behind the scenes. Andy seemed so laid back as Andy Taylor but so different as himself. When he yells at Barney in the one when everyone is getting punched in the nose you see Andy’s temper.

“Product of a brother/sister wedding” funny stuff.

Tags fun sitcom went darker? You have the right show? Are you getting the show confused with the Twilight Zone or Alfred Hitchcock Presents?
Will Dockery 02-25-2024, 12:11 AM I like both Gomer and Goober. It was Warren I didn't much care for.
Almost everyone seems to agree with that.
:)
ThisLittlePiggy 03-01-2024, 05:37 PM Gomer was great. I also liked Goober, not as much. Warren? Please. LOL

Jim Nabors got a letter from Ron Howard more than 50 years after they met (https://www.metv.com/stories/jim-nabors-got-a-letter-from-ron-howard-more-than-50-years-after-they-met)
It seems Gomer and Opie kept in touch!
