From 1971 to 1979, All in the Family enjoyed a nine season run on CBS before being replaced by Archie Bunker’s Place. The show was unlike anything that American sitcoms had tackled before with the focus on the extremely bigoted Archie Bunker, whose polite wife, daughter and son-in-law constantly try to teach him the wrongs in his thinking. Despite some serious issues and reservations at first, the show became one of the most iconic for that generation and has gone down in TV history! I'm very glad Penny Marshall didn't get the part of Gloria... i can't stand her, I think every character i've ever seen her play was off-the-charts annoying. I'm glad Sally Struthers got the part, she was a terrible crier but she was nice to look at.

Also, at 28 she was too old for that role. While Sally was only four years younger, she looked about 20 when that show started. I also don't see Penny being able to convey the vulnerability of Gloria; she was great as Laverne, but would have been a terrible Gloria.

The show turned TV on it's head, and IMO THE FIRST to look at controversial issues in a sensitive and intelligent way. Many of the topics AITF looked at were taboo until the show, yet the show took them head on. As someone who watched it when it first came out, I can say it was easily 25 years ahead of it's time.


While it's hard to imagine anyone else besides Carroll as Archie, the other veteran actors sited would have been great too. Although there were many fine young actresses to be sure, it's hard to imagine anyone but Sally as Archie's"little goil".

I knew Reiner was losing his hair, but as early as mid-season 1? Wow. I never saw the difference - next time I do a marathon...

I read about the disclaimer in the past, which only existed for the first season. It's hilarious it was removed so soon. But being the first of its kind, it's easy to see why a disclaimer would have existed at all. Later years and later shows, the disclaimer wouldn't be so wordy. Bit of a shame...

No clue about the casting issues either - Gleason would be the only other one to have made Archie really work and Bosley got "Happy Days". Rooney would have been an interesting choice. A bit of a shock as to how Sally got the role of Gloria, but being lovers in a workplace environment isn't always the best combination. Sally also made Gloria her own, but one reading can't always sell the whole character.

One thing not in the article is that Norman wanted the show in B&W but the network refused. So he dressed everyone in the colors that would closely approximate monochrome: Brown and blue. So the episodes always look grungy, but it works. And proof that before CGI there was color grading in filmmaking . :D

It also takes a highly trained person to make "bad singing" feel authentic. Jean was extremely talented, both in singing and in acting.
