Comedy Central Sets "The Daily Show" Spin-off Starring Jordan Klepper for 11:30pm Slot
by Nellie Andreeva
April 4, 2017

Comedy Central is sticking to its playbook, once again going with a "Daily Show" spin-off toplined by one of the program’s correspondents as an 11:30pm strip.

The network has picked up a new late-night talk show headlined by "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah‘s" Jordan Klepper reprising the persona he developed as a "Daily Show" correspondent. The new series will debut in the fall, serving as a "Daily Show" companion Monday – Thursday.

The current 11:30pm slot occupant, "@midnight", will move back to its original midnight start time.

Like with the two previous "Daily Show" spin-offs which aired behind the mothership series, "The Colbert Report" and "The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore", both executive produced by Jon Stewart, the Jordan Klepper-fronted show will be exec produced by Stewart’s "Daily Show" successor, Trevor Noah, along with "Daily Show with Jon Stewart" alum Stuart Miller.

There is very little information about the format of the new series, which is still in the beginning stages of development. Per Comedy Central, the show “will look to embrace and define the chaos of our country by channeling Klepper’s steadfast attitude that institutions are to be trusted less than the lies of the mainstream media. He’ll surround himself with a hand-picked team of contributors contractually obligated to reinforce his singularly correct world view.”

The description sounds in the vein of "The Colbert Report", which also was built around the strong views of Colbert’s conservative persona and also featured correspondents.

Comedy Central had been high on Klepper, who was hired by Stewart to join "The Daily Show" in 2014 and continued on to become the senior correspondent under Noah. Last year, the network signed a development deal with him to produce and star in a late-night talk show presentation.

Klepper has made his mark on "The Daily Show" both with his studio work and segments in the field, ranging from his two-part series “Good Guy with a Gun” to his field pieces at Trump rallies which have garnered millions of views.

“Jordan’s talent has become so increasingly obvious it would take a real fool to not offer him this opportunity,” said Comedy Central president Kent Alterman.

“The choice to entrust me with the 11:30 p.m. timeslot is both incredibly humbling and deeply disturbing,” said Klepper.

“Without a doubt, it has utterly destroyed my confidence in Comedy Central’s decision making acumen. Dear God, now I have to work with these fools.”

Jordan Klepper Teases his Post-Daily Show Late Night Series
by Bryn Elise Sandberg
May 23, 2017

Jordan Klepper is gearing up for his big debut.

"The Daily Show" correspondent may be leaving Comedy Central's flagship series to take over the coveted 11:30 p.m. slot, once held by Stephen Colbert and most recently Larry Wilmore — but he'll still continue to work closely with Trevor Noah as "The Daily Show" host is an executive producer on the yet-to-be-named series.

"The goal of the new show is for it to be a companion piece with The Daily Show, so we’re going to deal with politics and the news of the day but also attack it from a different perspective and try to find some stories that aren’t being told," Klepper tells The Hollywood Reporter. "It's literally coming on after The Daily Show and so we don’t want to be picking from the same news carcass, if you will."

While Klepper acknowledges that some overlap between the two half-hours is inevitable, he hopes that his show will offer enough variation.

"We want it to be something where if we are getting a certain take on The Daily Show, then when you come to me at 11:30, you’re going to get a different perspective on some of these things," he explains. "We’re going to work in tandem so that feels not only like two separate shows that live in a similar world."

As Klepper is preparing to transition to the role of full-time host, he's sought out advice from many of his "Daily Show" predecessors who have been through the same process, including Jon Stewart and Samantha Bee. He also reached out to the timeslot's most recent occupant: Wilmore.

"Larry is supportive and so kind and nice about it," says Klepper, who adds that he was a big fan of "The Nightly Show" and was "incredibly bummed" when it got canceled. "I wish I could be doing this show and Larry could be doing that show right alongside me in some kind of universe where they’re both happening at the same time."

Klepper, best known for his political field segments since joining "The Daily Show" in 2014, has an hourlong special on the gun control debate, Jordan Klepper Solves Guns, coming out on the network on June 11.

"What I was made brutally aware of on election night was that I'm definitely in my own echo chamber. Perhaps that makes me naive and and perhaps that makes the show at times naive, but I think [the question is], can we break outside of it?" says Klepper, who wants to delve into hot topics like gun control on his show as well.

"There’s half of America who aren’t reading the same news stories and who are looking at it from a different perspective, so I think there’s space there to explore."

As for now, Klepper is focused building his team in preparation for the show's launch later this year.

He quips, "It’s going to be on in the fall after the fall of western democracy, which I think is going to be June, maybe."

Jordan Klepper's Comedy Central Talk Show Gets Title, Premiere Date
by Dave Nemetz
July 25, 2017

It’ll be Opposite Day when Jordan Klepper‘s late-night talk show debuts on Comedy Central.

"The Daily Show" correspondent’s new nightly show will be titled "The Opposition with Jordan Klepper", and it’ll premiere Monday, Sept. 25 at 11:30/10:30c, right after "The Daily Show", the network announced on Tuesday.

"Daily Show" host Trevor Noah will serve as an executive producer on "The Opposition", along with Klepper and writer Stuart Miller.

"The Opposition" aims to cover the gaping political divide in our country right now and “will satirize the hyperbolic, conspiracy-laden noise machine that is the alternative-media landscape on both the right and left,” Comedy Central teased in a statement.

But of course, that signature "Daily Show" wit will still be on display: The show’s tagline is “Not Mainstream. Not Establishment. Not Helping.”

i can't be the only one completely burnt on the non-stop political bull**** that passes for comedy lately.

they already have WAY TOO MANY shows that are completely political-comedy-based; couldn't they try something DIFFERENT for a CHANGE?!?!

Comedy Central is so far down the toilet it is not even worth saving anymore; their stand-up specials are all reruns or newbies no one has ever heard of, South Park is crap even when it does come back for its 5 new episodes per "season", Tosh.0 is too repetitive to bother with, they somehow even managed to completely ruin the Celebrity Roasts (that last one was completely pathetic - it was a smarmy love fest with Hannibal Burress the lone bright spot and he even admitted that the whole show was crap and he didn't know why he was even there (most likely because that was the only airtime the idiots at CC will give him).

I think I am going to complain to my cable provider and their sponsors.

Comedy Central Boss on the Future of "The Opposition with Jordan Klepper"
by Anthony D'Alessandro
January 15, 2018

Speaking with Deadline, Comedy Central President Kent Alterman called "The Opposition", “a strong power hour in late night.”

Alterman informed Deadline that there will be more Klepper. “That’s the kind of show that I I feel evolves and keeps finding its way. And Jordan is so smart to keep honing the character and the show. What pleased us the most was how formed it was at the outset, knowing it’s not going to stay fixed. It’s just going to keep evolving. We believe in Jordan and we’re happy with him out of the gate,” beamed Alterman.

"The Opposition" To End as Comedy Central Orders New Jordan Klepper Weekly Series
by Nellie Andreeva
June 15, 2018

Comedy Central’s daily late-night program "The Opposition with Jordan Klepper" will end its run after one season but Klepper is staying on the network with a new weekly half-hour series.

Tentatively titled "Klepper", it will feature the comedian out in the field, traveling the country and speaking to people.

"The Opposition‘s" last episode will air on June 28. Klepper just shared the news with the show’s staff.

Development on the new show will start right after, with pre-production slated to begin in the fall and a premiere eyed for early 2019 in the 10 PM-11 PM time period.

The timing of the decision stems from the fact that "The Opposition" was wrapping its first season, with a slew of contracts for people in front and behind the camera coming up for renewal for another year.

“That added into the accelerated pace of the decision but it was mostly driven by excitement about the new show,” Comedy Central president Kent Alterman said. “We can’t do both obviously so we are winding down The Opposition in accordance with gearing up Klepper.”

Alex Jones' Infowars celebrates Jordan Klepper's The Opposition cancelation (https://twitter.com/infowars/status/1007734888932544513)
The Comedy Central show failed after one season (http://forums.previously.tv/topic/60968-season-one-talk-towjk/?do=getLastComment) of trying to do a sendup of the controversial conservative conspiracy theorist. "Jordan Klepper's crappy show has been canceled," Infowars' Twitter account tweeted, which Jones retweeted. "Comedy Central is currently brainstorming the next failed show to replace 'The Opposition.'"

Jordan Klepper's best work has been in the field, so The Opposition's cancelation is actually good news for him (http://www.vulture.com/2018/06/the-oppositions-cancellation-is-great-news-for-klepper.html)
Having Klepper mainly be in studio didn't play to his strengths, says Andrew Husband, who praises Comedy Central's decision to give Klepper a new weekly show that should showcase his talents. "Since The Opposition’s premiere last September, one thing has become abundantly clear: Klepper belongs in the field," he says. "He is a sketch comedian above all else, and he is generally more poignant and biting, not to mention funnier, when he isn’t bound by a studio’s four walls. Some of the Second City and Upright Citizens Brigade alum’s best work includes those moments when he’s out and about, talking with Donald Trump rally attendees or attending the NRA’s 'Comic-Con of death.'"

Comedy Central Unveils "Klepper" Premiere Date, Trailer, Plans for Weekly Jordan Klepper Series
by Lisa de Moraes
March 26, 2019

Jordan Klepper’s new documentary series "Klepper" premieres Thursday, May 9 at 10:30 PM, with the debut episode spotlighting veterans who are using wrestling to cope with PTSD.

Upcoming episodes will center on a direct-action protest of a major oil pipeline, and civil disobedience in the name of education for undocumented students.

Don’t expect to see much of Klepper behind a desk in New York City. Instead, he’s sinking in a boat with environmental protesters in a Louisiana bayou, packing moving boxes with one of the nation’s first Native American congresswomen in New Mexico, and posting bail at the Fulton County Jail.

“When Jordan said he wanted to travel the country to explore our most pressing issues and talk to the people on the front lines fighting for change, little did we know that he would capsize a boat in the Bayou or get arrested in Georgia,” Comedy Central EVPs Sarah Babineau and Jonas Larsen said in today’s announcement, adding, “we think that his super funny, poignant, and provocative portrait of America, was (almost) worth the bodily harm and criminal record.”

Added Klepper, “As I learned from middle school basketball, you only experience so much from the sidelines. Riding shotgun with America’s resistors, contrarians and dreamers, I saw firsthand our country’s fighting spirit.”
