What am I missing? I don't understand the whole basis of this show and it bores me to tears.

MeTV needs to remove it.

Same here. I like the theme song but I just can't get into the show. MeTV has shown it in the same time slot for too long now. It's time to put something else on then.

I don't get it either. I tried watching it. Couldn't even make it through one episode it was so boring and dreadful. MeTV needs to remove it. They have much more worthy sitcoms.

So they should get rid of a show just because you don't like it? What about the people that do like it?

I'm perplexed by this show as well. I watch it sometimes just if nothing else is on. What I've noticed is the extremely high production values, intricate stories, and great acting. And yet it's not funny at all. That's what I find perplexing. It's simply not entertaining to me despite the fact it appears to be a very well-made show. I guess some premises just don't click with me.

Schedule-wise, it needs to go. Not leave the network, but get out of the valuable primetime slot it's had for years. Even fans will have to agree it's been in that slot forever and a change is due.

I agree! I don't like it either. Same here the theme song is catchy,;) but the whole concept of making a comedy out of Nazi's and a POW camp has me scratching my head! :(

But to be honest, I really haven't ever sat and watched a whole ep. all the way through either. And I have to admit from what I saw this fat guy is kind of funny! ;) :D

The whole show is funny. All the actors are great. But hey some people think shows like Family Matters and The Nanny is funny, so there you go.

I haven't watched a lot of the show, so correct me if I'm wrong, but...

Didn't they imply that the prisoners could have left anytime, but that staying there was really more benefit to them because they could undermine the Nazi war effort more effectively? That could be one of those things I just "thought" I remember, a la the Mandela Effect.

And they never did leave/escape the camp for good, right, after the show was ended?

Good analysis, ABH...it was probably popular in its time, since my Dad's generation fought in that war, and they enjoyed seeing that portrayal, as totally unlikely as it was. I think it's kind of worn out its welcome on MeTV, but as you say, I guess it sells the My Pillows and the mesothelioma lawsuits.

This show has run it's course on MeTV.It's time to replace it with something else or move it to another time slot and have only 1 showing a day instead of 2 shows back to back. I personally have really never liked it.

Meh I still have no interest in it, sitcoms that have a war setting have never jibed with me likewise I'd never see something like F-Troop or M*A*S*H.

For me it's strange because I have no problem with war settings. I think F-Troop is great. It's just something about the way the characters, plots, etc. mesh on Hogan's Heroes that doesn't appeal to me. Though like I said before, I don't see it as a bad show quality-wise. Keeping my interest and making me laugh is where it falls short for me.

But that's just my opinion.

It's one of the things I don't get: it's 10:00 on the east/west coasts - the old people who buy this stuff should be in bed by then.

Some older folks have odd sleeping hours. Often they nap throughout the day; that means they might not be tired at 10:00 PM.

Plus, I'm sure the audience is not exclusively senior citizens.

I'm not a fan, but I respect the people who do like it and hope that when a show I like is on, those fans will be just as tolerate of me.

I never got into Hogan's Heroes either, I just don't see the humor in it. Generally speaking I'm not a fan of military sitcoms, but I do like Gomer Pyle USMC and some episodes of F Troop are fairly funny.

I never cared for the show, and if I ever got a box set as a gift I'd probably give it away to Goodwill. But, no matter the show, there will be those who love it; and for them I'm glad they have access.

Now that you mention it neither am I, except for MASH. I like wacky comedy much better like Mama's Family. Can you imagine Mama in the military? LOL she'd be some WAC drill Sargeant, with her sharp mouth. And driving her superiors just as crazy as Gomer.

Yup, M*A*S*H is pretty much my only military comedy, too. I remember there was one based on "Private Benjamin" that didn't last too long; I don't believe I ever watched that one. It's a really hard balance to strike between creating laughs out of the situation and not making light of the tragedies and seriousness of the matter.

Major Dad had the advantage of a peacetime setting. Hogan's Heroes did not, and I think that is one reason many folks are cold to it. But as others have said, to each his own. If everyone were the same, it would be a very boring world.

Have you seen Vicki Lawerence as Sgt. Alvinia T. Plout on "Laverne & Shirley?" If not, check it out. It's like Mama-light in the military. She even uses the Mama voice.

Episodes:

- The Baby Show (1983)
- Out, Out Damn Plout (1981)
- The Survival Test (1980)
- We're in the Army, Now: Part 2 (1979)
- We're in the Army, Now: Part 1 (1979)

I think there's an episode where Hogan says something like, "We're not prisoners, we're stationed here." There is an episode where General DeGaulle asks all Frenchmen to come and fight with him, and LeBeau has to decide whether to do that or stay with Hogan.

There was no finale where the war ended or anything.
back then shows very rarely, if ever, had finales. "THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW" and "THE FUGITIVE" had them but those were rare exceptions.

Also "I DREAM OF JEANNIE" was going to but it's a long story as to why it didn't.

I think Hogan's Heroes is brilliant comedy. The bonus of its setting is that the "prisoners" constantly make the Nazi's look stupid. The ensemble cast does a great job.

This was on tv before "The Producers" hitted the big screen. So you could say this influenced Mel Brooks's comedy.

Join the club. I've never thought this show was funny or entertaining even back when I first saw it when it was broadcast new in the '60's. Strange, odd, crazy, yes, funny? No. This show and MUSH are 2 shows that NEVER leave the airwaves and 2 shows I've never liked. Though I did like MUSH when it was first on when McLean Stevenson was on it, but when they killed him off, the show went downhill fast & I haven't watched it again (never in repeats) since.:)

I've only seen three episodes of this series, one as a kid, I didn't like it, two as an adult, and that experience was in the last few years, again, I didn't like it. However over the years I've seen bits and pieces of many episodes, and the plots always seem the same, bungling Germans with IQ's about the level of the standard tree stump, being easily outwitted by the allied prisoners. It reminded me of the old days on TV wrestling shows when you would have squash match after squash match, remember those days, Thor the Viking vs. Caspar Milquetoast.

In addition, the knowledge that the Germans represented were part of one of the most
evil regimes in world history cast a very dark shadow over the series, at least in my opinion. It's hard to be happy after that.

With everything I said, the show is one of the most enduring in the history of television. I think it can be argued that next to The Andy Griffith Show, it's the most popular rerun series of the 1960's. Hell, it finished its run in 1971 and it has been run continuously ever since. That's no accident. ME TV doesn't show it at 10 pm just to fill an hour, people love this show and continue to tune in.

So on behalf of all of us who never got it, I tip my hat to the creators, the writers, the actors, the technical staff, and the fans of this sitcom, it is one of the landmark series in the history of television.

^That's a really good summary. I've also seen a few episodes here and there, but the themes are pretty basic. Hogan blows up a train and fools Klink and the rest X 6 seasons.

To me some of the supporting actors they bring in are funnier than the main cast. Howard Caine, Leon Askin, Nita Talbot, for example.

Besides Me TV, I can't recall Hogan's Heroes airing anywhere else for a very long time. After Andy I would say the most constant 60s sitcoms that have usually aired somewhere and are the most popular are Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie. The Munsters and The Addams Family used to be more of a fixture but have disappeared more recently.

I never got this show either. It's a mash up of Stalag-17 and The Great Escape, both good movies; but a weird premise for a half hour TV comedy (and there's the general weirdness of Bob Crane). I've never known anybody that really likes it, but it's been in constant reruns for nearly 50 years! You'd think it was as popular as TAGS or I Love Lucy. I've always thought it must be one of those shows that retro stations can get on the cheap and that's why it's always on the schedule.

I never liked MUSH (LOL) either, but I know plenty of people that loved it in it's original run and still do. So it being on all the time makes sense to me even if it's not my cuppa tea.

There are some shows I liked when I first saw them as a kid :D and now don't care to ever see them again, Gilligan's Island, Brady Bunch & MUSH are 3 good examples:p. Now they're just excuses to go to the DVD and watch my own choice.

Then there are other shows that were popular back in the day and are still unexplainably on today, that I never liked from the beginning and wouldn't watch in 1967 and still would never watch today. Hogan's Zeros is a prime example, my grandmother used to like this show but I found it totally unfunny from the start and now just find it really annoying that it takes up valuable prime time that could be used to show really funny shows like Love That Bob or I Married Joan.

As the Tony Bennett song goes, "If I Ran The World" Every Episode of Hogan's MUSH Would be Thrown Into a Wonderful Bonfire.

I liked Hogan's Heroes when it aired originally, but I don't really care to watch it now. The plots do seem repetitive. Maybe getting it in small doses works better than large doses, i.e. one episode per week vs. two episodes every night. Also, knowing about Bob Crane's lifestyle might have soured me a bit.

I do not hate "Hogan's Hero's" but am just tired of it. I think it has had the 10:00 pm slot for at least 15 years which is way longer than the 6 years it was on. Someone at METV must love this show. I can't imagine the ratings being that strong. A different show for that time slot is way past due. "Love, American Style" would be a good addition for the 10 pm slot. It originally aired at that time anyway. Actually, I would be happy with almost any show. Does anyone else have suggestions for the 10pm hour?

SarahBellum
08-18-2021, 03:44 PM
It has been in the 10:00 time slot for a few years. One of the execs at Me TV stated that he hates Hogan's Heroes, but apparently it gets good ratings, so that is why they continue to air it.

I would like to see Twilight Zone moved up to 10:00 pm. It currently airs too late for me to watch.
