Complete series or nothing?

I don't see myself buying individual seasons anymore because of the number of shows that were released complete on DVD. Even though i want Head of the class or Who's the Boss on DVD, if season 1 of HOTC or season 2 of WTB was released this year I would not buy it.


I rather wait. lol Anyone else like this? Now 13 years old I would have ran to the store as soon as i heard the news of a single season release

Not exactly. I still enjoy buying single sets of my favorite TV shows. Many times its because its what I can afford at the time. Another thing that factors into me buying single DVD sets is the cover art. Yes it sounds strange , but I actually enjoy the cover art and disc art on DVDs. Many separate sets have good cover art , which makes it aesthetically pleasing , which leads to me possibility buying it. DVD cover art is another one. On separate sets such as I Love Lucy , the disc has cover art which is always nice.

Another reason why I buy separate sets is because I love the feeling of having to get it next time or having to wait a while to get another DVD of the show.

I'll use The Simpsons as an example. When I first bought The Simpsons , I was so excited about owning the DVD and watching it whenever I wanted. At the time I could only get 1 at a time , so I was disappointed that I could not get another. Then , the next time I went to the store , I got another season and was pleased and curious to see the seasons shows.

I like when I can only get one DVD of a series at a time. It builds up the anticipation of getting another one(Especially true if its a show you've never watched before but now like). Buying a complete series takes away that feeling.

Or, you buy the individual seasons and they stall or abandon the series. For a completest like me, that's beyond annoying. I find I can't even watch the seasons I do have, if I know I can't get the rest.

I understand what Cruisinforabruisin is saying, but I'd be too nervous, or paranoid that they won't release the next season to be able to enjoy the ones I have.

If it's a series I really want, I buy what I'm given and be thankful for it.

Yes, I'd love to have all complete series releases but that's not gonna happen anytime soon...especially with CBS and Warner Archive.

No. I just take what I can get. I'd love for all my shows to be released in full, but some shows just won't.

For those shows the studios refuse to release I turn to "Other Sources" to get what I want, such as Y2K3 Joker's sets of he Lassie and Season Three of The Flying Nun (As far as I'm concerned season three was not released because Sally Field was PREGNANT :eek: when this series was filmed. A Pregnant Nun? That's unheard of!). omg: As for Lassie, I never saw seasons four, nine, ten or 11 until I purchased them from Y2K3 Joker. I refer to them as the "Lost Seasons". When this show was syndicated the imbeciles in charge of this show LEFT OUT these seasons. :angryfire I FINALLY got to see these "Lost Seasons" AFTER purchasing these sets from Y2K3 Joker

The Flying Nun Season 3 is probably unreleased because of poor sales for the other seasons. I doubt it has anything to do with PC. Still hoping Shout Factory can pick up Season 3.

In most cases, yes, the shows I like/want are shows I want in their entirety. There are exceptions, though... for instance, if Twelve O'Clock High were ever to get a legit DVD release, I would rather have individual season sets, since I prefer Robert Lansing as the series lead in Season 1, rather than his miscast replacement, Paul Burke, in the other two seasons.

I prefer the complete boxes, but if the case of a finished show which has just a few season, I can also buy the single season and complete it over time. Like I'm doing for Everwood.

I prefer complete series. I notice that there are fewer DVD's stocked in retail shops every time I go. Everything is about streaming now. The thing is no service can stream everything and a lot of shows will be lost in the shuffle especially classics since they are considered for "old folks" by a lot of people.

My main question is how long the DVD player will last. It reached the point to where a VHS player was very difficult to find, more expensive, and I think they eventually stopped manufacturing them except for those "combo" units which seldom work correctly. The last VCR's I bought were cheap junk.

I'd hate to see DVD phase out like VHS did.

You will always be able to but VCR or DVD on ebay

Yes, I always get box sets, even if they have episodes I don't like. And unless there's no chance that a box set of the current seasons of "The Middle," "The Goldbergs" or "Modern Family" will come out, I'm not going to bother getting episode on iTunes, Netflix, or any streaming services. I have individual episodes of "New Girl" on iTunes, and the ones from S2 are cluttered with ads for other shows on FOX. Thankfully, I bought some DVD box sets with those episodes. On the other hand, the S4 box set of "Zoey 101" is supposedly missing one episode, so I've been quite hesitant to get that. I've also given up hope for DVD box sets of the last seasons of iCarly a while back.

Well, since Blu-Ray players are also capable of playing regular DVD's, I wouldn't worry that much.

True that, if the all-in-one doesn't have special bonus material that you never got with all the individual seasonal releases (like those of MacGyver and The Brady Bunch).

But if the individual seasons were $29 dollars and the whole series of 10 seasons is complete for less than #100 it's easy to feel cheated

That's been my experience too. The VHS part of my combo unit broke, with the DVD portion still working fine. Since I had four VHS's I wanted to watch, I bought a used VHS player/ recorder at Goddeill for $8. It works just fine, but then again, I use it rarely. Thankfully, the VHS portion of my combo unit broke down right after I finished converting my VHS media to DVD.

It depends. If it's a series I really want, and the price is right, I'll by the entire series. But I also really liked mini-sets that captured "the best of....." But on shows that have little released, like Room 222, I'll take whatever I can get.

DVD prices have dropped so much there's a part of me that regrets buying entire series 7-10 years ago. Now many of the ones I bought back then are now 1/3 of what I paid. But I look at it this way: free ep vids on You Tube weren't prevalent before. 2008, and the $70-80 "extra" I paid allowed me to have several years of enjoyment. So in the end I have no regrets. But given this history, I almost never buy DVDs now.
