The first look at Alicia Vikander in the upcoming big-screen Tomb Raider reboot has been released, and she looks very much like the Lara Croft longtime fans of the franchise will want to see.

The images, which debuted Monday on Vanity Fair's website, show the Ex Machina star as the new Croft, whose backstory goes through a makeover in director Roar Uthaug's upcoming Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

No longer a globe-trotting adventurer, this new Croft is a bike messenger who goes off in search of her missing father, starting with his last-known location: a tomb off the coast of Japan.

"She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past," Vikander told the magazine about her high-profile new role. "She is also uniquely different to other characters I have taken on previously. It's a lot of fun trying to get into Lara’s head, and the challenge of getting to grips with such a physical role is an element of this project that I find an absolute thrill."

The new movie follows a 2013 reboot for the video game franchise, which also launched with an inexperienced version of the female Indiana Jones who'd previously been played on the big screen by Angelina Jolie in two movies in 2001 and 2003, respectively. The 2013 game, called simply Tomb Raider, spawned a 2015 sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu and Dominic West also star in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, which is scheduled for a March 16, 2018, release.

Alicia Vikander says Tomb Raider Sequel is in Limbo: "It's kind of in somebody else's hands"
by Joey Nolfi
July 18, 2022

Lara Croft's big screen return might be holstered in place for the time being.

In a new interview for her HBO series "Irma Vep", Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander tells EW that the long-gestating sequel to her 2018 Tomb Raider movie adaptation is currently in limbo, after "Lovecraft Country" developer Misha Green was previously tapped to write and direct the continuation.

"With the MGM and Amazon buyout, I have no clue. Now it's kind of politics," Vikander says, referencing Amazon's multi-billion-dollar acquisition of MGM in March. "I think Misha and I have been ready, so it's kind of in somebody else's hands, to be honest."

(EW has reached out to Amazon and MGM for clarification.)

She adds that she "can't really say" much about Green's interpretation of Croft.

"I've been excited to show the world," Vikander teases of Green's vision. "I love what she's done with Lovecraft Country."
