Sarah Jessica Parker is celebrating her 53rd birthday. She was born in Ohio but eventually moved to New York while growing up. She made her Broadway debut at the age of eleven in a revival of Harold Pinter’s The Innocents, and in early 1979 took over the title role in the Broadway production of Annie. Her first big screen role was in the short-lived but critically acclaimed CBS sitcom Square Pegs in 1982; her first major film role came two years later in Footloose. Beginning in 1985, when she starred in the rom-com Girls Just Want to Have Fun, she has had lead roles in a variety of films: the action thriller Striking Distance, the horror-comedy Hocus Pocus, David Mamet’s State and Main, and the rom-com Failure to Launch. Her most recent major project is starring on, and executive producing, HBO’s Divorce; she received a Golden Globe nomination for the show’s first season.
Parker is most famous, however, for starring on another HBO series, one adapted from a book by journalist Candace Bushnell. Parker began starring as Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City in 1998, and during the series six-season run, she won four Golden Globes for Best Actress in a Television Musical or Comedy. She also won three SAG Awards, and Emmys both as an actress and a producer. She returned to the role of Carrie in two feature film adaptations.
