Not only did Carl Reiner appear on the Dick Van Dyke Show (as Alan Brady) he was the shows creator, producer, head writer, and for the first two seasons story editor! (Bill Persky and Sam Denoff took over as story editors at the beginning of season 3). Happy Birthday to one of the hardest working people in show biz, Carl Reiner!

Carl Reiner is turning 96 today. Reiner began working in the entertainment industry 70 years ago, in a Broadway musical revue titled Inside U.S.A. During the 1950s he was a writer and performer on Sid Caesar’s variously titled variety series; he won his first two Emmys as a cast member of Caesar’s Hour. He then went on to create The Dick Van Dyke Show, one of the iconic series of the sixties, winning five Emmys as a writer and producer. A couple of more recent highlights of his television career have included winning an Emmy as a guest performer on Mad About You, and appearing in the recurring role of Marty Pepper on Two and a Half Men.
Film audiences today may know Reiner best for his appearances as Saul Bloom in the Ocean’s Eleven trilogy of caper films. He has also had a significant career as a screenwriter and director. Most of his filmography has been comedies—Oh, God!, The One and Only, Summer School, and the thriller parody Fatal Instinct, for example. He had a particularly productive relationship with Steve Martin; he directed Martin in a series of comedies in the late seventies and early eighties, beginning with 1979’s The Jerk.
