Since Antenna's been running Season One of Joey Bishop for the last few weeks, we can comment on the quality of the show. I must admit on a few airings of the later season shows, I didn't care much for Joey Bishop. So imagine my surprise when I realized how much I enjoy Season One. The supporting actors (especially Madge Blake as the Jewish mother role) are excellent, and the family conflicts and bachelor life are far more relateable than the celebrities of the later seasons. And although Joey is still kinda a weak spot, he relates much better with these actors than the later cast.
A couple of notes:
--Why on earth does this season bounce between color and B&W?
--Although she's badly underused, Marlo Thomas is absolutely stunning. Who on earth thought she needed to be prettied up for "That Girl"?

I noticed too that a few season 1 episodes have been in color. Season 1 is black and white, so I can only assume that colorizing work was done on some episodes. I suppose it's also possible that NBC filmed a few episodes from this season in color, like they did with the 1st season of Hazel, that is a black and white season too except for one episode that was filmed in color.

Regarding the season 1 episodes of The Joey Bishop Show, I like it so far, I actually like all the seasons, even the 3rd season with all the guest stars. Each season has it's own formula, season 2 is different from season 1, season 3 is different from season 2, season 4 is different from season 3, so the series is varied and interesting instead of all 4 seasons repeating the same formula.

NBC did film several episodes in color as tests, similar to what they did with Hazel and Wagon Train that season.

There are 8 episodes from the 1st season that Antenna TV is skipping over and not airing. I contacted them about it and the answer I got said that there have been unforeseen complications with some episodes, but they hope to air those during the next run of season 1. So we'll see what happens.

I noticed also that Antenna TV is skipping all over season 1, they go in a row for a little bit then they start skipping again. Hopefully they will get them on in the future runs. I also find it extremely strange how some season 1 episodes are in color and others are b/w. I have never heard of or seen a TV series alternating one color to one b/w and going back and forth like that in the same season. Really weird.

By the way I really like seeing Batman's Aunt Harriet/Florrie from Real McCoys/Mrs. Mondello from Leave It To Beaver in this first season. She’s always been a favorite of mine.

There is only one Hazel ep. from season 1 in color. I saw S1 ep. 8 of JB in color the other day. So there are others?

So far I have seen three 1st season episodes of Joey Bishop Show that were made in color. I imagine there might be a few more. Since Hazel's 1st season only has the one color episode, makes me wonder if maybe at the time NBC had more faith/confidence in The Joey Bishop Show compared to Hazel because it seems they invested more money into it and gave Bishop's show more episodes in color.

Here are the 1st season episode titles that Antenna TV is skipping this time around. Hopefully these will air during the next run of the 1st season.

Hazel only had one color episode in the 1961-62 season. Wagon Train had 5 color episodes that season (Universal has somehow managed to lose the color masters of those episodes so they are always rerun in B&W).

The 8 episodes from the 1st season that Antenna TV is skipping over, it looks like they are being scheduled for the last week of March starting on the 27th. So that's good news.

The preservation of these misc. color episodes is varied. Evidently MeTV has the one color episode of Perry Mason, and the one S1 color episode of Hazel is shown on Antenna TV. Obviously they also have the JB episodes. Conversely, the one color episode of Burns and Allen is never shown, but it exists, as it is on You Tube.

The one episode I most want to see from the first season is "This Is Your Life," which is a crossover episode with the cast of "The Danny Thomas Show."

The color episode of Perry Mason was withheld from syndication for years, along with a handful of others (like the last episode). CBS finally added it to the syndication package 20 years ago.

The color episode of Burns and Allen was included in the syndication package as B&W because back in the early 1960s, many local stations weren't equipped for color. And it was cheaper to just include it as B&W. To this day, that episode has never been added to the package. CBS showed a clip of it during their anniversary special a few years back, and it looked pristine.

Lassie shot two color episodes during its first season, "The Inheritance" and "The Well". Both aired in B&W in syndication and the color prints were believed lost until a few years ago, when the color print of "The Well" was found. They also shot a five-part episode in color during the Timmy years when the regular episodes were still shooting in B&W. That used to air in syndication as a movie rather than in the regular rotation.

The 50s version of Dragnet had a color Christmas episode which always aired in B&W in syndication and the color print is believed to have been lost.

That's too bad about the color version of '50's Christmas Dragnet being lost (if it is), I'm sure it was probably the stolen baby Jesus episode that they redid multiple times on Dragnet, starting with a radio version first before the series went to television.

As for the color episodes from Season 1 of Lassie, the color version of "The Well" was released on DVD several years ago, here it is still for sale on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Lassie-Mothers-Love-Various/dp/B000N6UDDK/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1489962496&sr=1-1&keywords=Lassie+Mother%27s+Love

This DVD contains 4 episodes all pertaining to Mother, one of which is the color The Well.

Oh, and as for the appearance of a color episode in an otherwise all b/w series. Here is the explanation I read many years ago, warning I may not have the exact details correct but generally it was a network stunt, basically, that on that one night all episodes of their TV shows for that night would be broadcast in color. This is why that one Perry Mason show is in color, at least. I don't remember what other series were affected, perhaps Ozzie & Harriet but that's just a guess.

I just tuned in to the show a few days ago and am watching both the first and the 4th. It seems Antenna Tv is showing season one on weekdays and season 4 on weekends. I wonder why??? I like the first season a little better. When I first tuned in for about one minute, I thought Marlo and Warrens characters were Joeys children for Joey born in 1918 and Marlo and Warren in 1937. But that is tv. I prefer the black and white for sometimes I find the color later episodes a little bright in color. I am not too keen on Corbitt Monicas role and Joe Besser I keep thinking of the 3 Stooges. The first year seems a little more rounded in the family plots. I haven't seen all that many later years.I plan on seeing the whole show.

This is why I thought maybe only 1 Joey Bishop was in color. As far as Ozzie and Harriet goes, the entire 14th (final) season was filmed in color. This is the 1965-66 season, when a lot of ABC and CBS sitcoms went color. Some of these O&H episodes are available on DVD, in (unfortunately) edited syndication form.

I was surprised to learn that the fourth (final) season of Joey Bishop was on CBS, since NBC cancelled it after the third season. Since it went to CBS in 1964 (a year before many CBS sitcoms went color), it went back to black and white filming.

Route 78 is a good episode, Antenna TV ran that one today, I enjoyed it. A couple days ago they ran Jury Duty and Income Tax Caper, I enjoyed those too.

Overall so far I think the 1st season is pretty good, there are a few episodes I thought weren't that great but for the most part I like it.

I usually don't record anything from Antenna TV because they edit shows and also because of the credit crunching, but for the Joey Bishop Show I made an exception. I DVR'd all 32 episodes from season 1 and transferred them on to five DVD's. I have the retail DVD set of season 2, so no need to record those.

I also DVR'd the 26 episodes from season 4 and transferred them on to four DVD's, but I want to record episodes 14 to 20 again because a few of those have technical issues. When Antenna does the next run of season 3 episodes I plan to record those too.
