View Full Version : Woolworth's
Hawkee 02-27-2017, 03:48 AM When my mom and I would go shopping we would always go to Woolworth's and it was such a wonderful store and I would buy some awesome stuff there and Woolworth's even had a diner full of great food as well. It's a shame that today you can never find another wonderful store like Woolworth's again and there should be stores like Woolworth's that were fun to look in for awesome bargains
Do you remember Woolworth's?

Hawkee 02-27-2017, 04:11 AM When my mom always had errands to run I would always look forward to a trip to Woolworth's because she would always buy me a Barbie doll or a toy as a reward for good behavior and the toy section had some great new toys I would see there before they were found anywhere else. Another thing my Mom and I do at Woolworth's was try on perfume and stuff and it was such a fun time and Woolworth's also had a good section of Christmas stuff and that's where my mom bought our very first Christmas tree and our tree topper as well

I would get paper dolls or a little story book (that was a big deal in the early 60's) if I was good! :) :D And I remember they used to sell little pets. birds, turtles , fish!! And I really liked when we would have lunch there at the counter!!:)
ponytail 02-27-2017, 06:07 AM I loved Woolworth's and Newberry's ( I think that is how it was spelled )! Me and mom would go there and pick up something then go to the diner and have a sundae. I miss those stores.:(

They were fun!!;) I remember Newberry's too, but not till I moved out here to California! Than I took my boys there!:) Back east as a little girl along with Woolworth,we also went to a similar store Grants and also Kresge's ! I think ,not 100 percent sure though but Kresge's might have later went on to be K Mart? ;)
MISST3 02-27-2017, 02:56 PM I remember Woolworth's had the best "chili-burgers", I've ever had in my life! Anybody remember having one? They were great!
Penny Lane 02-27-2017, 03:21 PM I loved Woolworths! We had one in our mall(1970's). I was so disappointed when it closed!

Yes! As a teenager in the 70's besides the Woolworth I went to as a little girl , I went to one that was in a mall!:) I remember that one having a snack bar, as apposed to a diner /lunch counter, it was in the front of the store ! I remember they sold delicious pizza by the slice! ;) :happyface

I remember getting regular hamburgers there. They were so good! ;) :happyface
Torgo 02-27-2017, 04:34 PM Lloyd Center in Portland, OR had a Woolworth's until the early 2000's.

I used to live within walking distance of a Woolworth's (not fascinating info, but hey, it fits the topic  )
There used to be one downtown in the 60's & 70's but it went out of business. Ours had a basement and that's where all the toys were. I loved that store when I was a kid. They had a lunch counter on the main floor in the back and my mom would get me & my brother a sundae or a milkshake which we had to split between us. My little sister hardly ever went, she'd get left with my grandmother. I guess taking 3 kids shopping was too much for my mom.

 :D
The Woolworth that we used to go to when I was little was within walking distance. :D The one in the mall you had to take a bus or drive!;)

Kresge's indeed went on to become Kmart and that's what the K in Kmart stands for. We used to have three Woolworth's stores one near me and one in town and there was even a Woolworth's in my mall too but when the Woolworth my mom and I would go to shop a lot in closed it is now a Ace Hardware store. I sure wish variety stores like Woolworth would make a huge comeback today because there's something wonderful in those types of stores that will make you explore for hours searching for great bargains

Regulus 02-28-2017, 02:39 AM Kresge was owned by K-Mart. Woolworth owned a department store chain called Woolco. Now K-Mart is in bad shape, I guess they couldn't compete with Wal-Mart and Target.
Coffeecup 02-28-2017, 11:21 AM Yes we had a Woolworths, Grants, Almys, a store called Empire which had a few stores in Essex County, Mass, a few local stores one called Browns and Mals. Mals later became a Kings, then that store became Ames . On the corner across from Woolworth was a drug store called Sterlings.
Many of the stores did have a lunch counter. Department store seems cozy to a kid. My mom would meet people and chat. I always wondered who ate the cream cheese and olive sandwiches that were on the menu for about 15 cents . That is something I haven't seen on a menu anywhere in the last 30 years. My mom every late August would take me to the stores for school shopping clothes.
All the stores gone by early 1970's except Empire and Ames which hung on til about 15 years ago. Empire would cater to the richer people with wedding wear and Ames was the cheaper store. The malls 40 minutes away killed us. When more people had cars things changed more and more. So sad!!
Bonniegirl 02-28-2017, 02:04 PM Another fond memory was( I don't think it was Woolworth's, I'm pretty sure it was Grants) that there was a big jar of small peppermint patties like York that they sold at the counter for a penny. I always loved them!!!:happyface
And my Mom always bought her sewing patterns and material at those 5 & 10 stores too! :)

Those sound similar to the popular "olive-nut" sandwiches a local confectionery shop used to serve.
There was no Woolworth's close-by when I was growing up, but we did have Kresge's. My main interests in those years were popcorn and Hot Wheels / Matchbox cars. I can still remember the aroma of the popcorn, walking in. Kresge's deli sliced ham was very popular.
MrCleveland 02-28-2017, 03:01 PM I do remember Woolworth's...mine was in Old Brooklyn and it stayed up until the early 90's.
I still remember looking at the birds and fish they had...now It's a Family Dollar.
Penny Lane 02-28-2017, 03:04 PM There was a Kresge's in downtown Flint for years but it's long gone now. In fact a lot of Michigan cities had one. Bay City, Battle Creek, Detroit, Port Huron to name a few. It was a lot like Woolworths. Five and dime, and snack bar. My mom used to take us there when we went to Flint to shop. (1950's) Flint was a bustling city in those days.
Here's an old picture of the Flint Kresge's on Saginaw Street/Main St.
Race's Girl 02-28-2017, 03:11 PM Yeah, there was a Woolworth's everywhere in London in the 80s and 90s
Ohio8 02-28-2017, 05:46 PM Woolworth's had three Toledo locations:
1)There was one at the Parkway Plaza shopping center in Maumee, Ohio. I don't remember when it closed. Parkway Plaza's near the house that my family lived in after we moved to Toledo.
2)Downtown Toledo.
3)Woodville Mall in Northwood, Ohio.
Ohio8 02-28-2017, 05:46 PM There was a Woolworth's on Euclid Avenue in downtown Cleveland.
Ron Ron 02-28-2017, 10:52 PM I loved their cafeteria. Loved their hamburgers and pies....LOL and french fries.
Family Ties Forever! 03-01-2017, 03:15 AM I can't remember if there was ever a Woolworth's here. There used to be a Service Merchandise and Montgomery Ward, but both stores closed down a number of years ago.
KurtfromPitts 03-01-2017, 11:59 AM I remember Woolworth and G.C. Murphy's stores as well. Used to go to those stores all the time.
Willbo 03-01-2017, 12:13 PM I loved Woolworth's and GC Murphy as our mall had both of them. Their lunch counters were so good. I also worked at a SS Kresge and loved it also. Their food was also very good. I think these types of stores are so missed today. The dollar stores are just not the same.
Coffeecup 03-01-2017, 12:35 PM Fish for the kiddies and sewing patterns for mom. The stores were smaller than the well known stores of today, but they seem to have everything we needed..
Flying Dutchman 03-01-2017, 03:05 PM Woolworth and Woolco. I do remember them. Got my 1st grade elementary school clothes there. And BTW. K-Mart would compete with Walmart and Target if they tried to. The Management is very bad and they have crappy merchandise and it's too high priced.
Anyone remember "Two Guys"? I loved that store too. I also met the Brady Bunch there when I was 11 years old. I remember ticking off Barry Williams, lol. Sure miss those days.
biffbronson 03-02-2017, 01:21 AM I can't remember if e was ever a Woolworth's here. There used to be a Service Merchandise and Montgomery Ward, but both stores closed down a number of years ago.
We had Service Merchandise and Montgomery Ward too -- in fact I knew people who were employees of each. We used to nickname Ward's as "Monkey Ward"
Ward's was torn down (had been a mall anchor), as was the downtown Kresge's. The second Kresge's location was taken over by a G. L. Perry variety store, and is now a Tuesday Morning.
At one time we had 4 or 5 Kmart stores in my area; there's only one left.
Willbo 03-02-2017, 09:01 AM My dad also bought us colored ducks and chicks at Murphy's at Easter time. They came in all different colors.
