View Full Version : Ginger's Wardrobe-An Index
Alex Cooper 02-17-2017, 11:07 PM I was delighted to discover I am not the only one interested in the sartorial stylings of the gorgeous, glamorous Ginger Grant, played by the luscious Miss Tina Louise. This inspired me to attempt an index of every outfit worn by Ginger in the 98 Gilligan's Island episodes. The GI Wiki has a nice list of main costumes for all of the castaways, but Ginger's, at least, is not complete.
The purposed index will be divided into four sections:
I. Main wardrobe
II. Bathing and sleep wear
III. Auxiliary outfits
IV. Dream and hallucination outfits
This will probably end up being more information than anyone would want or need to know, but I had a heck of a lot of fun rewatching all of the episodes and taking notes.
Also, I would appreciate any suggestions, as well as help making this list as accurate as possible. Unfortunately, even the "complete" DVD releases have missing scenes, so please let me know of any unintentional omissions.
Now, to start with the dress that launched a thousand ships (or was shipwrecked with one)...
Alex Cooper 02-17-2017, 11:32 PM Section I. Main Wardrobe
The outfits Ginger did or would likely consider daily wear, keeping in mind that Ginger's idea of daily wear is much different from Mary Ann's, or, well, anyone else's in the world, which is why she's Ginger!
I. 1. Original/ Beige and Silver Gown
This is Ginger's classic look, the dress she was shipwrecked in, and, according to her, the only dress she had with her. It was, by far, worn more often than any other outfit, appearing in a full two-thirds of episodes. This isn't surprising, as it's a beautiful dress, and Ginger looks beyond stunning in it. Even as she mysteriously found ways to expand her wardrobe though stranded on a deserted island, this gown remained Ginger's "go-to" outfit, rarely being absent for long.
According to a 2012 New York Times interview with Tina Louise (seriously, you can find it online), her wardrobe was designed by Nolan Miller, who created this "beige dress with silver bugle beads along the neckline" that was made of "crepe and very thin."

Seen with a fur wrap in episodes 12, 24, 35, 61
In episode 68, it is seen in Gilligan's dream of the castaways still stranded fifty years later. The dress wears remarkably well.
In episode 82, it is technically worn by Eva Grubb, Ginger's lookalike, of course also played by Tina Louise.

Alex Cooper 02-20-2017, 01:10 AM I. 2. SS Minnow dress
Duffel never looked so good! Likely tired of wearing the same gown day in and day out, Ginger commandeered Gilligan's duffel bag, and showing incredible sewing skills, turned it into this simple but stunning dress. Maybe Mary Ann helped. For Ginger, this could be considered casual wear. Very popular in the first season, it was seen only once in the second season and once in the third. Apparently, as her wardrobe grew, Ginger saw less need to wear it, which is a shame, since despite its simplicity (or maybe because of it) this dress really showed off her, ahem, assets.
Interestingly, this dress appears in three episodes before Gilligan asks "New dress?" and Ginger reveals its origin (in episode 13). Perhaps this episode was actually filmed first and aired later, or perhaps the oblivious Gilligan truly didn't notice it until then.
Despite a bluish tint in the colorized first season, the dress is indeed white, as it ironically took the filmed-in-color episodes to see.

In episode 31, it technically only appears in Ginger's imagination, as she incorrectly recalls the events of episode 15, in which she didn't even wear this dress.
Alex Cooper 02-20-2017, 01:11 AM Thanks to Zamboney for this great screen shot! The full picture is on the favorite outfit thread.
Alex Cooper 02-20-2017, 01:14 AM Super sexy with the headband!
Alex Cooper 02-20-2017, 01:16 AM This isn't a great shot, but it shows well the length and cut of the dress, as well as the placement of the Minnow name. Wonder if the Skipper paid her for the free advertising?
You can also see a necklace with diamond pendant that Ginger wore for several episodes around the middle of the first season, that then was never seen again. Perhaps this was some of Tina's personal jewelry.
Alex Cooper 02-21-2017, 01:49 AM I. 3. Print Sarong Outfit
This lovely fun-in-the-sun outfit is a favorite of Ginger and fans alike. A predominately pink multi-colored pattern graces a bikini-bandeau top and a long sarong-type skirt. It's the perfect ensemble for lounging on a bamboo chaise while listening to the Hollywood news, meeting a rock group, or getting captured by head hunters.
When wearing this outfit, Ginger often accessories with hoop earrings, and she seems to prefer to wear her hair up. If she wears it down, she'll add a wide white headband or a giant flower for an added tropical feel. Flip flops are the footwear of choice to complete the look.
Upon its introduction fairly early in season one, this outfit is seen regularly up to the series' end, though its final appearance leaves something to be desired (namely, Ginger!).

Mmm, I know, I could stare at this particular pic forevers!:)
Alex Cooper 02-23-2017, 02:38 AM I. 4. Green dress
This long lime-green dress features a gathered, plunging neckline, a belt that can be tied in the front or back, and a sexy slit by the left leg. Ginger mainly wears this outfit for casual, everyday island happenings such as teaching Gilligan how to go-go dance, hunting for rare butterflies, or eating soap to counteract the effects of radioactive vegetables. However, she did don it for a more formal affair, when she acted the sultry lounge singer in an attempt to reconcile the Howells during one of their many separations.
In the colorized episodes, this dress is incorrectly tinted lavender.
Introduced towards the end of season one, this outfit quickly became one of Ginger's favorites, making frequent appearances and achieving the distinction of being her second most worn outfit. In its final appearance, though, a delusional Mary Ann "alters" it, perhaps destroying it forever. Rather an ignominious end for such a popular dress.

Alex Cooper 02-25-2017, 12:26 AM Turned into a shirt! (Compare with the length in the previous picture. Was Mary Ann supposed to be, like, two feet shorter than Ginger?  )
Alex Cooper 02-25-2017, 01:24 AM You can't see the dress much, but Ginger wore it with a one-time only, very sexy hairstyle!
Alex Cooper 03-03-2017, 10:46 PM I. 5. Yellow knit dress
This infrequently seen outfit is surprisingly subtle in comparison to other Ginger attire; perhaps this is why she didn't wear it often. It's a knee-length, sleeveless knit dress with a scalloped design around the shoulders and neckline, which extends down to ten or so small buttons.
It appears only four times in latter season one, and it isn't until its sole wearing in season two that we get to see its true colors, so to speak. It's a bright, lemony yellow that goes quite well with Miss Grant's red tresses. Too bad we never get to see it again; it likely got lost in the back of Ginger's closet as she acquired more and more "movie star" type duds.

Alex Cooper 03-03-2017, 10:52 PM The only scene in which this dress appears in living color. As a side note, Ginger's "hairstyle" here cost her the chance to become deputy leader of the island!
Alex Cooper 03-11-2017, 01:15 AM I. 6. "Circle" dress
This knee-length, sleeveless white dress features a series of circular cut-outs around the front and back at stomach level, which are connected by golden rings. The neckline has a unique "U" shape, compared to many of Ginger's other dresses, which are "V" shaped. This outfit is usually paired with white pumps.
In the black and white episodes, the dress sometimes looks more gray than it actually is, and you can better see the material it's made of, which appears burlap-like. (I said burlap-like, Ginger; we all know you'd never actually wear burlap!)
Seen a few times towards the end of season one, it was completely absent in season two, but found favor with Ginger again, and was worn a number of times in season three. Perhaps its most memorable appearance is in "Voodoo"; it's what Ginger is wearing when the witch doctor passes fire over the castaway voodoo dolls' feet, forcing our septet to the lagoon to cool off.

What was her beef with the show exactly?
Why didn't she do the reunion movies?

Alex Cooper 03-11-2017, 02:26 AM "Who's that pretty girl in that mirror there?"
She feels pretty, oh so pretty!:)
I've heard various reasons for Tina not liking the show: she thought she was going to be the star, it was silly, it typecast her...
Apparently she was willing to do the first reunion movie, but the salary she wanted was more than Bob Denver was getting, and well beyond the budget for a TV movie.
I think in later years she came to terms with the whole thing, and did reunite with the cast for special events.
Tina, you're beautiful and talented, and the joy you brought to millions playing Ginger means a lot to us GI fans!:)
Alex Cooper 03-17-2017, 09:39 PM A perfect outfit for St. Paddy's Day...
I. 7. Green crop top and pants
This casual wear outfit was seen infrequently. Ginger doesn't wear pants often, but she shows she can rock trousers as much as she can skirts and dresses. A green crop top shirt with a circular neckline and spaghetti straps are paired with matching pants that have a lace-up feature at pocket level.
It's similar in color to the green dress; in fact, it too, like the green dress, is incorrectly tinted lavender in the colorized episodes.
Seen only a handful of times in the first season, this outfit makes one brief appearance in the second season before disappearing to clothes purgatory. Too bad; I love Ginger's gowns, but I wouldn't mind seeing her in the occasional practical outfit, as this one clearly is. The bare sleeves and midriff are perfect for tropical weather, and she could easily do island-related chores in this. But, then again, maybe its rarity makes this outfit extra special!

The pants are seen in episode 49, as part of Ginger's insect protection outfit. This look will be indexed with the auxiliary wardrobe.
Teaching the Skipper some exercise moves. If I had exercise instructors like this, I may have, well, actually exercised. Plus, she must have borrowed the pearls from Mrs. Howell, as we never see them on G. before or after.
Alex Cooper 03-17-2017, 09:50 PM The look that drove an amnesiac Skipper crazy!
Alex Cooper 03-17-2017, 09:56 PM The only color scene with this outfit. Thank you very much to Zamboney for the screen shot!:)
As another unique moment, Ginger wears some of her giant curls with the hair down in the back. Super sexy!
Alex Cooper 03-20-2017, 09:06 PM We've covered all of the main wardrobe outfits introduced in season one. Here on out, everything was seen in glorious Gingercolor (though there are still some great images I found that are in black and white).
I. 8. Leopard print dress
This super sexy animal print dress was the first new outfit seen in the second season, and it's a winner. It perfectly fits Ginger's curves while still having a shimmering flow. Tapered at the waist, the dress extends to just above the ankles. At the left shoulder a long, thin cape is attached. The cape appears to be even longer than the dress, and Ginger often holds it in her hand or wraps it around her arm for an added flourish to her already sexy moves. There's even a matching headband that Miss Grant occasionally accessories with. Appropriate footwear are her flip flops or beige pumps.
Immensely popular in season two, appearing in nearly half of those episodes, it's seen only a few times in mid-season three. Like the Yvonne Craig Batgirl, where did it come from, where did it go?
Some sources list this dress as one commandeered and altered by Mary Ann-as-Ginger in "The Second Ginger Grant," but I don't think it is. Mary Ann's dress is darker, as well as being a much tighter two-piece ensemble with a bare midriff. She'd have to have done a heck of a lot more than take up the hemline. Apparently, Mary Ann has her own version of this Ginger outfit. Maybe it's a good thing both ladies never wore them at the same time; those '60s TVs probably would have melted from the heat.

Alex Cooper 03-21-2017, 12:37 AM Backtracking to the green lounging dress, I just came across this image, and had to add it under the Agony is Ecstasy department!:)
Alex Cooper 03-24-2017, 10:10 PM I.9. Swirl pattern dress
Ginger goes psychedelic! The primary color of this dress is a lavendry magenta, with swirls of white, brown, and an olive green/coppery brown. It's similar in cut and length to the leopard print dress, but with a toga-like flair and its own flourishes. The material is more gathered, it's joined at the shoulder in a bow, and there's a long, sash-like piece at the waist (it's hard to see!) that extends well below knee level.
Although Ginger liked this dress enough to sport it when she thought the Mars probe camera was going to beam her image all over the world, she wore it only one more time afterwards. She prefers classic over fad looks anyway, but this outfit's distinct look does make its brief appearances memorable.
In its first outing ("Smile, You're on Mars Camera"), Ginger accessories the dress with small gold hoop earrings and an obviously island made shawl (perhaps added for a comedic effect, it may have been intended to give her "wings" when she's transformed into a Martian bird person). She wears her hair up with the giant curls. In the dress's second and final appearance ("Agonized Labor"), the hair is down, and Ginger's diamond earrings and bracelet accentuate the look. Flip flops are worn both times, pegging this as a casual look for Ginger.

Alex Cooper 03-27-2017, 09:09 PM I. 10. White beaded gown
Until now, Ginger's island-made outfits were attractive, but not glittering-movie-star-walking-down-the-red-carpet fare. That changes drastically with this gown, which screams Hollywood premiere. It even gets an in-episode unveiling in its first appearance!
A glistening white shell is overlayed with a plethora of clear, shiny beads that create a shimmering halo around Ginger's luscious curves. The neckline dips into an enticing "V" that allows for some cleavage; the "V" pattern is repeated in the back. The gown extends to the ankles, divided at the bottom by a high slit in the front that rises nearly to the knees.
A variety of hairstyles are seen with this dress. Popular accessories include a sparkly silver headband and diamond jewelry. White pumps are the natural footwear choice.
It's possible that this dress (as well as more of Ginger's flashier attire that follow) was salvaged from the costumes found in the crates of rescued silent film equipment, then altered by Ginger (presumably with Mary Ann's help) to accommodate her figure and style.
Upon its introduction, this gown becomes Ginger's outfit of choice for seduction scenes, a position it keeps until the later arrival of the orange beaded gown; it then is hardly retired but has to share the spotlight. Though Ginger does primarily wear this dress for romance and/or parties, she does sometimes don it for more prosaic events as well (such as feeding Gilligan when he has a bowling ball stuck to his hand). No matter the occasion, with this gown Ginger looks every inch the glamorous movie star.
This dress was also seen in publicity shots, probably done for the third season, though one is on the second season DVD and download covers.

(This image is from later season three. IMO, with this hairstyle and slightly softer makeup, Tina looks younger here than she did at any point in the series. Not that she ever looked old, she just seems exceptionally radiantly youthful in this shot.)
Alex Cooper 03-27-2017, 09:39 PM One more pic for good measure, cuz one can never get enough of a good thing!
Alex Cooper 03-30-2017, 12:27 AM I. 11. Cardigan and pants
The first of the main wardrobe's one-wear wonders, this outfit is a bit of an analomy by Ginger standards. Maybe this is what she would wear, along with a pair of giant sunglasses, back on the mainland when she didn't want to be recognized by her ardent fans. It's still a hot look, with the low cut, form fitting sweater, no visible undershirt, and ultra-tight pants. Plus, the khaki, shades of green stripes, and light blue hair bow prove Ginger can rock a multitude of colors at once. She looks like the '60s high school sweetheart you'd gladly give your letterman's jacket to.
While we get a good look at the cardigan, blink and you'll miss the pants. We never learn the length or hem cut of the pants, nor the shoes worn, as, alas, this outfit only appears in one brief scene of one episode.
A theory: This scene, while a cute bit of comedy for the ladies, hardly advances the plot, aside from a quick mention of the Professor fixing something Gilligan broke. Since Giliigan is always breaking something, this scene could be transplanted into nearly any episode where the castaways pack, expecting imminent rescue. Perhaps the scene was added for filler, shot at the last minute, and Tina didn't feel like being poured into an evening gown again for a few minutes of work. Thus, she donned something more simple...maybe something from her own wardrobe?

The best longshot view of this outfit happens so fast, you can see the next scene fading in!
Alex Cooper 03-30-2017, 12:32 AM Once again thinking rescue is nigh (those castaways are eternal optimists), Ginger folds and packs her animal print bathing suit.
Alex Cooper 03-30-2017, 12:34 AM Years before PETA, Ginger gushes over Mrs. Howell's mink coat, while we gush over Ginger's sexy expression.
Alex Cooper 03-30-2017, 12:37 AM Gilligan protects the girls from flying clothes, allowing a confirmation view that this is one of the few outfits that gives us Ginger in pants (sleeves, as well. Our girl is rarely besleeved.)
Alex Cooper 04-01-2017, 12:30 AM I. 12. Sparkling gold gown
Another true movie star look, Ginger shines in this form-fitting lamé gown that hugs her curves in all the right places. Distinguishing features include an asymmetric neckline that creates a small sleeve on the right shoulder, a tapered waistline, and a slit at the left leg that, when at rest, shows the material gathered together.
The dress usually displays a goldish-beige tone with silver sequins, but in certain lights it takes on a grayish-silver hue. This iridescent effect is evidenced by Ginger wearing her tan pumps but accesorizing with silver and diamond jewelry. At some points she even sports two tone earrings (or she has double piercings and wears two pairs.)
This outfit has two versions. It's most often seen as described above. However, on two occasions the dress also has an additional piece of material that wraps around the breasts and creates a second sleeve, as well as a sash-like belt. Either that, or Ginger has two nearly identical dresses literally cut from the same cloth. I'm opting for the former explanation.
This dress, in the second version, has the distinction of being the last main wardrobe outfit worn by Ginger in the series (though not her final outfit in general). (Also, due to various Ginger-related clues, I doubt the last episode aired was the last one filmed.)
While the glittery look of this dress makes it a natural and frequent party wear choice, Ginger just as often dons it for everyday affairs. It's what the well-dressed movie star would wear when picking fruit, right?

Alex Cooper 04-01-2017, 12:46 AM A shot from the gown's first appearance. It isn't seen long, though, as the ladies are about to depart, not being allowed to take part in the men's vodka party with the cosmonauts. As author Joey Green said in The Unofficial Gilligan's Island Handbook, while Ginger and Mary Ann don't have a lot in common, "they both share a curious indifference toward being relegated to sexist roles."
Alex Cooper 04-01-2017, 12:49 AM This is the about the "biggest" Ginger's hair got in the series (not counting hair-up styles). I love the bounce of the hair when she sneezes during "Allergy Time," the ep this shot is from.

Alex Cooper 04-02-2017, 01:07 AM I. 13. Pink dress
After her new glam gowns, Ginger goes back to basics with a simple cloth, monochromatic hot pink number. The dress does share features of other favorite G outfits, such as the evening gown length and a sexy hemline slit. However, it differs in having a high jewel neckline and long sleeves. She shows less skin here than with any other main wardrobe outfit so far. A belt ties in the back and tapers the dress at the waist. Ginger somehow manages to find matching pink pumps to complete the look, and often adds her sparkling silver headband for a touch of dazzle.
I have it on female authority that redheads don't look good in pink. My male perspective loves Ginger in this dress; she looks like a hot, curvaceous Valentine. But the feminine assessment may explain why Miss G only wears this dress three times, far less than its twin in all but color (the next outfit to be indexed).

Alex Cooper 04-03-2017, 10:03 PM I. 14. Red-orange dress
Apparently cut from the same pattern as the last dress, this version pops in a bright red-orange. Ginger seems to prefer this color (it does go well with her red hair), and liked the look enough to wear this dress two different times when the castaways thought they would soon be back in civilization. She also donned it when serving as Mrs. Howell's maid of honor. (If you haven't seen "Mr. and Mrs. ???" it's a long story why the already married Howells are getting married.) Ginger certainly has flashier clothes for a wedding, but she knows a bridesmaid never outshines the bride.
Now for the confusing part. This dress has the most convoluted history of any Ginger outfit. It makes its first five appearances with a long, ankle-length skirt. Then, with no explanation, it's seen in two episodes at knee length. After that, it appears long again (hard to tell, as it's not actually worn then), but Mary Ann is clearly seen cutting it; it ends up as a minidress that Ginger sports. However, two subsequent episodes show the dress lowered again to knee length. Finally, to complicate matters even further, it's final appearance in the last episode of the series finds the dress return to the original long version.
Not that the Gilliganverse is logical, but there may be a real world explanation. Episode #92, "The Second Ginger Grant," where the dress goes from long to mini, could have been filmed before any of the medium/knee length appearances. Mary Ann (in universe)/ wardrobe person (real world) left some hem and took it down to create the medium look, which was then worn in four episodes. The reversion back to the long gown length in the final episode is likely attributable to said episode being filmed much earlier in season three (based on Ginger's hairstyle) and held back to be aired at the very end, for whatever reason(s).
# of episode appearances (all lengths): 11
Long seen 6 times, in episodes 62, 63, 65, 67, 77, 98 (and possibly 92, though not worn)
Medium seen 4 times, in episodes 86, 88, 95, 96
Mini/short seen 1 time, in episode 92

Alex Cooper 04-03-2017, 10:16 PM A rarely seen style with a bun in the back.
(The collar of the dress seems more rounded in some pics; it's likely the belt pulling at the material. Without the belt, the collar appears to go straight across the neckline.)

Alex Cooper 04-06-2017, 01:28 AM We're now up to the main wardrobe outfits that premiered in the third and final season.
I. 15. Orange beaded gown
Ginger goes back to glam, in a big way. This gorgeous gown is similar, especially in overall cut, to the white beaded dress, but with some important differences. First, obviously, is the color. This gown radiates in light orange, kind of like a melting creamsicle. Next, the sexy slit here is in the back, instead of the front. Finally, the jewel work is more varied, with larger, heavier beading on the top, and beads that appear to diminish in size and/or number below the waist.
As usual, Ginger has matching color pumps. She tends to accessorize less at this point in the series, but still occasionally adds some earrings to the look, and at one point struts a performance-enhancing boa.
Ginger knows this dress makes an impression. She first wears it for Harold Hecuba's solo performance of Hamlet, the Musical. It's the most frequently seen of the third season-introduced outfits, for apparent sizzling reasons.
# of episode appearances: 8
Seen in episodes: 72, 75, 79, 83, 86, 87, 91, 92
Alex Cooper 04-06-2017, 01:32 AM While Ginger ponders being pawed by a sleazeball, look under her arm at the intricate, raised pattern of the gown that's under all the shimmering beads.
Alex Cooper 04-06-2017, 01:33 AM Gilligan learns never to cross a woman scorned...or an actress rehearsing a scene.
Alex Cooper 04-06-2017, 01:37 AM Don't corner a feisty redhead, especially one in an evening gown.
Alex Cooper 04-06-2017, 01:40 AM From "Man with a Net"-- Lord Beasley, by being oblivious to this vision of beauty before him, proves he must be:
a. blind
b. asexual
c. insane
d. beyond admirably devoted to butterfly collecting
Alex Cooper 04-06-2017, 01:43 AM A good view of the dress in action. Also, the beading on the skirt seems more pronounced here than in other pictures. The lighting, perhaps?
Alex Cooper 04-06-2017, 01:45 AM This is one of my favorite shots. The hairstyle here perfectly frames Tina's face. Add the dress, and she's a statuesque flame of loveliness.
Alex Cooper 04-06-2017, 01:53 AM This is a nice shot, but I'm not wild about the hair. It looks too much like a wig. More reminiscent of her shorter season one hair than the longer, straighter locks Tina transitioned to, this look was seen, rather incongruously, a few times in season three. I can understand a wig in "All About Eva." It likely facilitated the use of a stand-in for shots of "Ginger" and "Eva" together. However, why the wigged look was used in "The Second Ginger Grant," where this picture is from, is beyond me. In fact, the hairstyles that Mary Ann-as-Ginger sports are far closer to Ginger's season three looks than what's seen here. Another GI mystery.
Alex Cooper 04-07-2017, 10:14 PM I. 16. Yellow tweed top dress
This outfit is another curveball in Ginger's wardrobe repertoire. Of all the dresses ostensibly made on the island, this one feels the most homemade. It's believable as something cobbled together from various bits of material. A tweedy tank top, maize yellow with specs of brown and orange, balances a yellow-orange long cloth skirt. A hair ribbon and belt tied in the middle are made of the same (or very similar) orange-yellow, shiny material. The seams on the side are quite pronounced. Flip flops (matching, of course) complete the look.
This outfit does share features of many Ginger dresses: no sleeves; low neckline; angle length skirt; a bright, warm color. And, to be fair, it is appropriate for the one occasion it's worn [in "Man with a Net"], a tea in honor of Lord Beasley (actually part of a plan to get rescued that even the Skipper thinks is far-fetched). This isn't a bad little outfit, but other Ginger wear outshines it, which is likely why it was relegated to the recesses of Ginger's bamboo closet after this one appearance.
(It wasn't easy to get pictures of this outfit! The only scene it's in doesn't focus much on Ginger:mad: , and she's sitting down most of the time. When she does stand up, to raise her cup in a toast, she's quickly blocked by Mary Ann doing the same.)
1 appearance in episode #75
Alex Cooper 04-07-2017, 10:17 PM Quick, look at the dress before Mary Ann stands up too! (Normally I enjoy looking at the beautiful Dawn Wells, but not when she's about to block a fleeting view of an extremely rare Ginger outfit!)
Alex Cooper 04-07-2017, 10:20 PM This time a pitcher obstructs a good view of the top of the dress. Maybe Tina wasn't fond of this outfit either; it doesn't seem like her to let her beautiful bod be blocked so often!
Alex Cooper 04-07-2017, 10:26 PM The castaways wake up with massive hangovers after sleeping for two days and ten minutes (I know how they feel!), allowing a fairly decent side view of Ginger's one-wear wonder. Note the fly on her belt. It was buzzing around during this shot. See, who says Gilligan's Island isn't realistic?
Alex Cooper 04-10-2017, 10:27 PM I. 17. Boa-collar jumpsuit
Ginger gets into the swingin' '60s with this groovy garb. A large white and grey feather boa is attached to the top of this jumpsuit that hugs Ginger's curves and then billows out with flowing trouser bottoms. It's clearly what the smart-set girl would wear to battle a giant spider!
This outfit is difficult to place in the index. It is the next main wardrobe outfit to appear chronologically based on the accepted episode numbers. However, its premiere in #79, "The Invasion," is part of a Gilligan dream sequence. Its first and only "real world" appearance comes much later in episode #96, "The Pigeon," actually making it the last main wardrobe outfit to debut in Gilligan-reality. This duality can be attributable, in Gilliganverse, to the outfit being worn earlier than "The Invasion," during unseen events. It made such an impression on Gilligan, he subconsciously transplanted it to his imaginative dream world. In our reality, likely this outfit was hanging on Tina's clothes rack, and she or the wardrobe person grabbed it while filming "The Pigeon," forgetting it was a "dream only" outfit. Or, they knew this, and thought, "Who'll notice?", not anticipating the show still being watched fifty plus years later, on a variety of platforms that allow viewers to rewatch, rewind, pause, and zoom. (Since Mary Ann also later wears her dream sequence outfit in "the real world," the latter explanation is more likely.)
2 episode appearances: 79 (in a dream sequence), 96
Alex Cooper 04-10-2017, 10:30 PM This is the best full view I could get from "The Pigeon," though it does give a decent side and back view too.

Dawn is indeed beautiful, and if I get to it after this undertaking, I will do a Mary Ann wardrobe index too.
I meant no offense to Dawn with that comment! I met her a couple of years ago at a comic con. She was lovely, friendly, and very gracious.
Torgo 04-11-2017, 11:00 AM I am so glad she didn't ever have to work with that Gagsdale person. ;)
Tina was too busy appearing in high class cinema like Evils Of The Night.
Alex Cooper 04-17-2017, 09:39 PM I. 18. Light blue gown
The last of the main wardrobe outfits to be seen with regularity (with frequency, actually, given its late introduction), Ginger proves her comely figure can carry cool colors too, as she shines in baby blue.
Similar in overall cut to most of her other gowns, this one differs in color and the thin cape, attached at the right shoulder with two round diamond pins, and fastened in the back at waist level. This allows the cape to have a nice flow when Ginger moves, though without the versatility (or hindrance) of the cape from the leopard print dress.
Small silver sequins add to the sparkle, so Ginger doesn't accessorize much with this outfit. She does, of course, have the ubiquitous matching pumps. The skirt is more diaphanous than other dresses, as in certain light one can see the silhouette of Ginger's shapely legs. Super sexy!
This is one of two G. outfits that Mary Ann can be seen actually wearing when she thinks she's Ginger, proving Miss Grant isn't the only one who thinks this look is a winner.

Alex Cooper 04-17-2017, 09:41 PM Ginger and the dress in action, with the cape visible
Alex Cooper 04-17-2017, 09:44 PM From the gown's very first appearance. I'll forgive the wig here, as Ginger's doppelgänger Eva is about, and a stand-in/double will soon be needed. Also, this is a good look at the pins that attach the cape to the shoulder.
Alex Cooper 04-17-2017, 09:48 PM Ginger dons a jet pack and prepares to potentially sacrifice herself to save the other castaways....actually a ploy to trick Gilligan to don the jet pack and potentially sacrifice himself to save the other castaways. Gilligan should have been suspicious; clearly, Ginger wouldn't wear one of her best glam outfits for such an arduous task.
Alex Cooper 04-17-2017, 09:56 PM A semi-close back view, where you can see how the cape is attached. (Mary Ann must have had a heckuva lot of zippers in that sewing kit she brought along.)
Alex Cooper 04-17-2017, 09:59 PM A fairly good long shot back view
Alex Cooper 04-17-2017, 10:00 PM Ginger is wearing this dress when also wearing some of my favorite expressions. Tina has admitted she had fun making the show; this had to be one of those moments.
Alex Cooper 04-17-2017, 10:05 PM Adamantly trying to convince Kalani to work for her and Mary Ann, instead of Gilligan or the Howells. Just, , wow!:D (Or was this when she was giddy about the potential rescue made possible by the discovery of the jet pack? Either way, Ginger is beyond beautiful in her excitement!)
Alex Cooper 04-17-2017, 10:07 PM Mary Ann dons this gown, and dons it well[s]. Bad pun. But Dawn does look great.
Alex Cooper 04-20-2017, 01:29 AM Going back a ways, I corrected some terminology and posted a better full view pic of the print sarong outfit.
I. 19. Orange V-strap dress
A sultry look that wasn't seen as often as it should have been. Drenched in a Spanish yellow-orange, this dress's distinguishing features are the wide straps that connect to the plunging back line, then cross diagonally to connect at the front and wrap around a bandeau-like piece, all with a nice little square knot in the middle at cleavage level. The rest of the outfit is classic Ginger dress style, with an ankle length cut and sexy slit in the back (though this one is a bit higher than others, going up to the back of the knees). By now, of course, it goes without saying that there's a matching pair of heels (though I just said it).
Seen only twice, this dress is technically only worn once by Ginger. The first time it's worn by Eva Grubb, but it's safe to assume this was originally a Ginger outfit that Miss Grant graciously let Eva borrow for two reasons: 1. It's doubtful the dowdy Eva would have had something like this in her suitcase, especially as she was preparing for a life of solitude, and 2. Ginger is later seen wearing it, and I don't think she'd stoop to wearing something that once belonged to her nemesis. (It was nice of Eva to leave behind the two dresses of Ginger's that she wore. Hey, if you're gonna leave a girl stranded on a desert isle, at least leave her with her wardrobe.)
On an un-clothes related note, I think Tina Louise did a great job with the dual role of Eva and Ginger.:)
2 episode appearances: 82 (Eva), 93 (Ginger)
Alex Cooper 04-20-2017, 01:32 AM Here's a nice frontal view of the dress, but don't be fooled. This isn't Ginger; this is Eva. Ginger is nice. She will not hurt you. Eva is not nice. She will hurt you.
Alex Cooper 04-20-2017, 01:34 AM This is definitely Ginger. Even when contemplating yet another hope at rescue, she exudes a playful lasciviousness.

Alex Cooper 04-21-2017, 01:17 AM One more, to show off this gorgeous smile...
Alex Cooper 04-21-2017, 01:59 AM I. 20 . Dark blue gown
Seen only once, this gown is the main wardrobe's only foray into primarily dark colors. The midnight blue still shines, though, thanks to the inlaid silver sequins, and a peacock blue cape serves as a low-riding scoop neck collar in the front, that in the back dips to a "V" and then trails down. This is more of an actual, full cape, too, compared to other outfits with this feature, which have a smaller strip of material on one side.
The exact length of the cape is hard to determine, because we're never given a complete view of this outfit. Persumably, it follows the pattern of other Ginger gowns and is ankle length with a sexy slit (probably in the front, so as not to be hidden by the cape). Also likely are matching pumps, either in the color of the dress or the cape.
Ginger wears this in the classic "All About Eva" when Eva waylays her and takes her place with the other castaways. When pretending to be Ginger, Eva sports G's original, iconic beige/silver gown (and as herself, the orange dress seen above; Tina had to change clothes a lot for this episode!). I speculate that the original plan may have been to have Ginger wear the dress we know her so well in, and Eva the dark blue gown. This would make sense for a couple of reasons. First, there's the time honored Hollywood stereotype that good guys (or girls) wear light colored clothes and bad guys wear dark colored clothes. Second, if Eva were wearing the dark blue gown, we could presume that was what she had on when she left the island, explaining why we never see this dress again.
But remain on the island it did, and I sure wish it had been seen at least one more time, coupled with Tina's more natural straight locks. I'm palpitating just thinking about it!
One appearance in episode #82
Alex Cooper 04-21-2017, 02:03 AM This close shot doesn't reveal any different details of the dress, but there are few distinct views of this outfit offered, and Tina's wide-eyed expression here is wonderful.
Alex Cooper 04-21-2017, 02:10 AM An upper back view, thanks to Tina Louise's stand-in, while Tina herself is playing Eva and facing the camera. The "trick" is pretty obvious, because Tina's backbone is not this pronounced, and the stand-in says Ginger's one line in a voice clearly different from Tina's. But hey, they were cranking these episodes out at breakneck speeds, probably without the biggest of budgets, and certainly without the help of computer editing.
Alex Cooper 04-23-2017, 04:39 PM I. 21. Green shirt and skirt
Even glamorous movie stars don't need to be dressed to the nines at every moment, but Ginger's final main wardrobe outfit is rather lackluster compared to her other wear. It's a light green ribbed top with a dark green skirt. That's it. No shimmering sequins, no daring décolleté, no vivacious vents. (Though there is a nice sheen to the skirt's material.)
Of course, Ginger still looks great, and it's refreshing to see some elements usually lacking from her wardrobe: practicality, sleeves, and a chance to see her legs. Still, I feel Ginger was being deglammed a bit in the final few episodes, as evidenced by this outfit; some of her wardrobe being altered or destroyed in"The Second Ginger Grant;"and diminishing appearances of old standbys like the leopard print dress, the sarong outfit, and the white beaded gown. Or it could just be my imagination.
1 appearance in episode #96
Alex Cooper 04-23-2017, 04:42 PM A full side view shows this outfit didn't even have its own pair of matching shoes, as Ginger sports her beige pumps. At least, though, we get a gander at Ginger's gorgeous gams, usually denied with the longer dresses.
Alex Cooper 04-23-2017, 04:46 PM Only with a close view can you see that the ribbing on the shirt forms a check pattern; in other shots the lines appear only vertically.
Ginger looks cute/sexy here as she does penance for overfeeding Walter the pigeon.
Alex Cooper 04-23-2017, 04:50 PM Apparently Mary Ann has a turtleneck version of this shirt, made with the same, or incredibly similar, material (maybe the show's wardrobe budget was drastically cut towards the end:lol: ). I'm sure both ladies didn't wear their shirts at the same time; Ginger and Mary Ann might be friends, but they're hardly the Bobbsey Twins.
Alex Cooper 04-23-2017, 04:59 PM Thus, with this pleasing but uninspired look, the main wardrobe section is over (notwithstanding a few outfits to follow of dubious placement). Had Gilligan's Island gone on to its fourth season and Tina Louise stayed with the show, it's intriguing to think what directions Ginger's wardrobe may have taken.
Interestingly, Ginger received seven main wardrobe outfits each season, at least going by how I'm dividing all of the costumes she wore during the series. For being stranded on a desert isle, a closet full of 21 distinct outfits for everyday wear is enough to make anyone proud, especially a smart, sexy, sultry movie star like Ginger Grant.
Alex Cooper 04-24-2017, 09:46 PM And now some outfits that are quasi-part of the main wardrobe but, for various reasons, don't really fit there....
I. ? A.
This dress can be seen above in the site's show avatar. I reckon the collection of cast shots this is from were pre-series publicity photos. The looks of Gilligan, Skipper, and Professor seem to be finalized; and if Mr. Howell never wore this exact set of clothes in the series, he did wear things very, very similar. The ladies, however, are a different story. While their outfits correspond with the basic looks they'd sport in the series, I don't think any of them wore these specific outfits. I can't say with 100% certainty for Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell, but I know for sure Ginger did not wear this dress in the series proper. It's like the dress worn by Judith Baldwin in Rescue from Gilligan's Island, but Tina's version appears to be made of a more shimmery material. Also, the back here looks far more elaborate than the reunion version. It's hard to see from the side glimpse, but the dress looks to be backless, with various straps leading around and holding it all up. It looks like the shoulder straps attach to the bits coming from the side. It must be an incredibly sexy rear view.
Maybe it was decided this dress wasn't eye catching enough, though, leading to the creation of the beige/silver gown.
Still, I assume that at some point, Ginger wore this or something like this on the island.
Alex Cooper 04-24-2017, 09:51 PM At this point, the series hadn't even started yet, and already they're bored to tears with being marooned.
Alex Cooper 04-24-2017, 10:02 PM I. ? B.
This is from episode #35, "My Fair Gilligan." After being adopted by the Howells, Gilligan looks out the window to see the others having fun while he, as a Howell, must remain aloof (ignoring the fact that in most episodes the Howells join in on any festivity). Anyway, since Ginger is only seen in long shot, it's really hard to tell, but she seems to wearing something not seen anywhere else in the series. It's likely a sweater or jacket donned by Tina over a Ginger outfit or something of Tina's own. Aside from said outfit being low cut, it's nearly impossible to tell for sure. Since it was one brief long shot view, likely no one thought it would matter what she was wearing. So, in-universe explanation, I'll say this is some kind of outer layer worn over a previously established Ginger outfit, and not a new outfit itself.
Alex Cooper 04-24-2017, 10:15 PM I. Cartoon
While not part of Gilligan's Island proper, this is Ginger's only main wardrobe outfit in the two animated series, The New Adventures of Gilligan and Gilligan's Planet. Made when Tina tried to distance herself from the Gilligan phenomenon as much as possible, the producers feared likeness recriminations, so the animators had to make the character Ginger-like and un-Tina like at the same time. Thus, the platinum blonde hair, the missing beauty mark, and the wispy, Marilynesque voice.
Still, the outfit fits into the "real" Ginger's general repertoire. The overall style is reminiscent of the SS Minnow dress, though the skirt here is shorter. The lavender shade is similar to the incorrect hue given to some outfits in the colorized first season episodes. And, while series-Ginger never wore a black belt or black heels, at least with her main outfits, she had these abundantly in an assortment of other colors.
So it's easy enough to picture flesh and blood Ginger wearing something like this.
Alex Cooper 04-24-2017, 10:23 PM This is the true end of the main wardrobe section. I'll begin part two with a new thread, but please continue this one with any comments, suggestions, or additional pictures.
Peace! Hope everyone enjoyed! :)
Ginger is changing clothes right now, but she'll be right back after these messages!

To think that this garment was made for Ginger, and she appears in it for less than thirty seconds in this episode. Wonder what became of this dress?

check out Ginger closely on this one
Coffeecup 03-24-2019, 11:26 PM I read somewhere that Nolan Miller the dress designer on Dynasty did many of the gowns/dresses for Tina's character on Gilligans Island.

This is funny considering that on the Gilligan's Island animated spin-offs, Ginger had blonde hair (presumably, to get around the non-participating Tina Louise from suing for using her likeness without her permission):

CosmicCharlie 08-20-2019, 07:49 PM When watching GI i'm always disappointed not to see Ginger's VPL's (visible panty lines)
They really made an effort to hide her silhouette of her undies
Question - In some of Ginger's outfits are any braless vs the use of a pinned in bra ?
In the Up At Bat episode (3-1) you can actually see Mary Anns underwear (panty) more than once when they try to beat off the bat with a broom - the short skirt she wears is REALLY SHORT ! It shows up a few more times in other episodes ... Seems they really went for it with regards to Mary Ann being alluring from time to time - her shorts are SO high cut - what would maybe be called Hot Pants about 6 years later+-
CosmicCharlie 08-20-2019, 07:55 PM Ginger looks adorable when she dress's up as the Wild Native Girl along with everyone else except Mary Ann ! Anyone have a close up of her with her cute outfit and face made up as a native ?

I recently stumbled upon this database that chronicles scenes in TV series and films featuring scenes of women wearing nylons or spandex attire, including Ginger and Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island (http://nyloninfilm.com/index.php?title=Gilligan%27s_Island).
This particular scene if I'm not mistaken comes from what turned out to be the series finale (https://gilligan.fandom.com/wiki/Gilligan_the_Goddess):

You wanna know another episode where Ginger wore that navel diamond? "Love Me, Love My Skipper". It was towards the end of that episode where Ginger wore a bellydancer/harem-type getup, exposing her entire midriff. HOT! You think that would've been an influencer on today's navel piercing designs, do you?
CosmicCharlie 08-15-2023, 04:17 PM I OFTEN WONDER if Ginger wore her natural hair vs a wig or fall ?
Or what was here Natural color as well ?
