DOES ANYONE HERE HAVE THE EPISODE OF "ANN SOTHERN" THAT GUEST-STARRED LUCY? PLEASE HELP!

Weird that Lucy is still remembered yet Ann (whose old sticoms of the 50s--NOT My Mother the car, sadly, but whose old 50s shows were rerun in the 1980s on the early Nick at Nite) is largely forgotten.


Like Lucy, she appeared in countless radio sitcoms (and possibly dramatic and adventure shows) and movies in the 1940s yet Lucy became more well known LATER and still is, yet Ann Sothern, besides having BEAT Lucy to it (with her "Maisie" series in the forties) to superstardom but still going her own successful way in the fifties, contemporaneously with Lucy, fell outta the public eye..esp.on MY MOTHER THE CAR. I could have said "EVEN on MMTC" but given its being the butt of jokes (reportedly even on GET SMART!) one could say that MY MOTHER... sunk Sothern's car-eer (get it?) in the 60s.

...that Lucy WANTED Ann to replace Vivian Vance on "THE LUCY SHOW" in 1965 (as "The Countess") in an occasional appearance...but something happened late that year that caused the two of them to never work with each other again. Was it their egos clashing? Or did Lucy say something to Ann that made her just "walk away" from her, for good? At least Desi TRIED to bring her back to TV in "THE MOTHERS-IN-LAW"....if only Ann and Eve Arden hadn't had the same "appearance" and vocal delivery....

Lucy's stardom lastest for decades because of her very talented comic ability. She became a "legend" because of her comedic timing and longetivity in television, not to mention her sitcom of I Love Lucy pioneered other sitcoms up until this day. She was also the first woman to be head of a studio. I have never seen Ann's work, I'm sure it was very good, but did she keep up with acting through the years? That may be why she may not be remembered as well. I respect Ann, and in regards to that last comment, Lucy and Ann were very good friends. I've heard stories, that when Lucy and Desi were fighting late at night, Lucy would call Ann to help her, she confided in Ann very much, from what I have read, and I've read several books on Lucy. Ann sounds like a nice gal, unfortunately I've never seen any of her television shows. :)

All the books and info I've read on Lucy say the same thing. Ann and Lucy were friends and there was never a problem between them. It came down to one thing. Ann wanted to billed as a co-star and essentially an equal with Lucy on her show.

This was the main reason Vivian Vance is said to have left. Not because of any real animosity but she Vance wanted more control. So if Lucy had given Ann what she wanted she could've gotten Vance back for the same deal.

If you look at any sitcom or TV show it's hard to find an actor / actress who will star in a show and then quickly go to another an accept second billing and no control.

Roseanne Barr (is that the name she uses now) had a quote which said, "When I got back into stand up I had to get used to the idea that I wasn't a star and couldn't boss people around."

So I have never read any real issues between Ann and Lucy just a matter of business.

My favorite episodes of the Lucy Show are the ones where Ann Sothern guest stars as the Countess. It is too bad she didn't appear in more than 5 or 6 episodes.

Another reason people probably are not too familiar with Ann Southern(well people born after 1970), is because The Ann Southern Showhasnt been seen much. Nick at Nite had it(that is where I saw it for the first time), and I am not sure if its been syndicated since then.

Anybody know?

I have never seen this one in reruns. By the time I had got cable, nick at nite had already stopped airing this on their schedule. And there appears to be nothing of this show anywhere, not even a public domain issue.

Thats unfortunate. Maybe American Life Network will pick this show up. That way people can see it again.

Right now, the shows on American Life seem to exclusively come from 20th Century Fox and Four Star (which Fox owns distribution rights). Since the Ann Sothern Show was from Desilu, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Well I don't have AL, so it's a moot point for me, but I was commenting on how the network seems to have moved away from shows from the '50s and towards more '60s and '70s, regardless of the distribution company involved.

Not just the 50's but the 60's too. I dont think anybody has shown this show since Nick at Nite had it, and that was around 1988 or so. Pity.

From what I have read Ann did not want to be tied down to a regular sitcom at the time. Ann and Lucy remained good friends to the end. I have seen nothing to indicate otherwise.
