I had 3 cavities on the upper right filled last Thursday. I'm having pain and soreness in my gums. I'm also having some pain in a few teeth. I have to be so careful what I eat because the top of my mouth is so sensitive. If you have ever accidently burned the roof of your mouth. That's the kind of sensitivity I'm having. I've tried over-the-counter medicine (Motrin, Tylenol). Aleve does nothing for me. My dentist does not write for any pain medicine, period. I've tried Oral Gel that helps temporarily. My gums on the top are sensitive on both the left and right side.

Is there anything else I can try?
I know I'll have to go back to the dentist.

If I had a Dentist that refused to prescribe anything for pain I think I would probably have to find a new one. This tried & true method works for me if I have a toothache or after I've had one removed.

Sometimes hot & cold foods will cause tooth pain after cavities are filled. I was told it takes a couple of weeks. I also agree you might want to get a new dentist if he or she won't prescribe a pain medication.

(other than giving birth, from what I've been told)

I know that peppermint works. Applied to gums and/or tooth (peppermint extract or peppermint oil)

Take a teaspoon of coconut oil (which is a solid) and swish it around for 10-20 minutes, spit out into a trash can. Do not swallow or spit into a sink It will contain bacteria from the mouth and it can gum up pipes for some reason.

Sorry to hear that! I've gotten relief using Orajel™ Alcohol Free Antiseptic Mouth Sore Rinse. I use to have a filled tooth that would flare up 2 or 3 times a year. I started using this stuff and it stopped.

My dentist actually told me that clove oil works wonders for toothaches.

He also said that the dental torture scene from Dustin Hoffman's Marathon Man (1976) is perhaps the most accurate portrayal of dental work on film. The dentist uses clove oil to relieve the pain during the famous "Is it safe?" scene.

I had the same problem with my tooth and when I had very bad pain I used a teeth medicine named Kanka and it did help but when I finally went to the dentist it turned out I had a hole in my tooth that caused me so much pain and so I have a silver filling on my tooth now. I would also recommend eating some chow mein noodles to help soothe your tooth once you had your dental exam

If you have an abcessed tooth. Here are some remedies that I have come across. I have never tried but in case of an abcess the best thing to do is to get an antibiotic which most dentists will provide. They won't work on or pull an abcessed tooth. So if you are in pain with an infected tooth (and I have had a couple of these; they are miserable)here is what I found to try.

-Try using raw garlic. Cut a small pieceof garlic clove and stick it right on the problem. It will sting a little after a bit. So take breaks and then reapply with a new chunk of cut garlic everytime it hurts until it gets better.

- A very warm tea bag will help draw the abcess out and the caffeine and heat will help with the pain.
